Welcome to the winter sowing forum! The answers to your questions can be found in the FAQ, linked below. Read it, and if you have more questions (and you almost certainly will, but keep in mind there are no stupid questions), come back and ask away. Everyone here is very friendly. We were all newbies once.

Oh yes, we sure do WS outside in Northern Winters. This is Ws in MA, right smack in the middle of the "snow belt" less than 20 minutes from the NH. border.

Mid Feb. just keep adding more containers on top of snow, just be sure not to put them on top of the ones that are already underneath the snow.

THIS is a great party to join! I just had my first WS season and it was amazing. I learned so much from the generous folks on this board and my gardens are bursting with flowers. Just be careful...it starts with saving containers, then you get hooked on buying and trading seeds and then...oh, I can SAVE the seeds from all these flowers in the garden and then....well, you just don't want to go to work anymore! Just want to play in the dirt! And check the posts on the forum...

Yup. You get some milk jugs or soda bottles or whatever, cut drainage holes in the bottom, dump in 3 inches of good potting mix (not soil), sprinkle on some seeds, slide a vented plastic bag over the top, and huck them out in the snow. In spring, each one is a (practically) free potted plant, ready to plant out.

The only thing I start indoors now is my tomatoes. Everything else goes outdoors, each in their own private little greenhouse.

We will offer FREE seed - we will announce 1/2 price seed sales both on the internet and in retail stores - we will introduce new and unique ways and containers to WS in - we will bemoan the fact that we PROMISED to cut back on the # of containers yet find ourselves hastily creating new garden beds to accomodate our beloved babies and last but not least - WE HAVE FUN and garden 12 months out of the year....

I have gardened for more years than I like to count and have had success in most areas, but seeds...well, I've had alot more failures than successes. I am surely looking forward to going through all this info, and just learning, learning, learning from you all.

Donnabaskets -- welcome! If you need seeds, email me! I'm a relative newbie, this is only my 2nd year and already I have tonnes of flowers in my backyard, and tonnes of seeds from last year's blooms. All thanks to WS!

Gardenscout -- you can start toms via WSing too. I've been doing that 2 years in a row now and my toms are unbelievable. I had over 150 sprouts. Most of them had to be given away -- I just don't have that much space to grow them. My plants have been pumping out fruits since mid June like there's no tomorrow; the sungolds and black cherrys are about 10 feet tall now. Why not give WS toms a try next year?

I have newbie seed packs ready to go. Thanks to donors I have envelopes and postage to send them to you for an email. Let me know.

Welcome to the party! It's the best one I've ever attended! Be sure to read the post..."Hindsight is 20/20 - 3 of your best tips for beginners" it's got great advice! And remember, this "party" is addictive and there is NO 12 step program for it!!!

Welcome. Lots of sharing and caring on this site. The first year I dabbled, just a few containers. Would this really work? The second year I was convinced and sowed over 100 containers. Last winter I jumped in and sowed over 500 containers. The sowing is the easy part. Finding places to plant seedlings or people to share them with is harder. LOL, I still have some seedlings that are blooming in their containers. Most of this year's sowing are perennials and I tell everyone that this old lady needs to start all my perennials now because they often take three years to mature and I'm running out of time. It's hard work and exhausting but I love it all. My body sometimes says, not today. Then I get myself going, need to get some new beds made for all those sprouts.

Wintersowing forum is active with people posting every day. Great to read about a surprise, see photos of beautiful plants, and share the joy and frustrations of gardening.
