I've been wondering the same exact thing... I've got several tender items still gathering energy out in pots, outside in the gardens.

I just re-potted my Sprekelia, so all that will need to come indoors is a good spray of insecticide. I think the Lycoris radiata bulbs are in a large enough pot, so I don't think they'll require any re-potting, either. I do have several Gladiola corms and Canna roots that will require un-potting and storing... and I'm not sure how to go about that, since this is my first year growing them. I have Oxalis, too, but I believe those can stay in the pots and just go into the basement for winter.

My indoor Hippeastrum bulbs definitely need some major attention... many need larger pots and new medium, and others can be grouped or separated, as needed.

What's the proper time to re-pot Hippeastrum bulbs? Right after flowering, as with most other things? Or, after their growth cycle, when they're winding down and the days are getting shorter?

I doubt I'll have the space to pull and store any of them dry... perhaps I should just treat them as houseplants, and re-pot when necessary, leaving the rest as they are.

I'm so busy with outdoor garden projects, my Hippeastrum care has gotten away from me, to some extent! How bad is that!?!

Even worse, is the thought that I've definitely had this conversation before... only, I can't remember the outcome! My memory is getting really bad...

Well if my memory serves me, the repotting should be done when the bulb is put into dormancy. For instance, soon I'll stop watering my bulbs outside in their pots and allow them to stop growing and slip into dormancy-- it is then that I'll take them out of their pots.

My issue is how to actually do that. Do I wash out the old soil, trying to retain as much of the roots as possible? Do they go right back into soil or should I let them air out in total darkness yet keeping them dry?

I guess I should do a query on the forum as I'm sure this has already been answered.

I'm certain you could find the proper information with a search... I wish I could help you more, but I've never put any of my bulbs through dormancy.

I've read, however, that many people will bring in their potted bulbs right before frost occurs, and put them in the basement or a cool, dark room. Some won't even take them out of the pots, but will tip the pots on their sides so they remember NOT to water.

Then, when the appropriate amount of time has passed, normally 6-8 weeks, they will un-pot and re-pot their bulbs into fresh soil, cleaning up any dead leaves and roots, etc... water them, bring them back into the light... and voila! Six to eight weeks later, they should bloom!

The process is fairly simple, but I've just never done it, myself. I've always treated my bulbs as regular houseplants, and allowed them to lose leaves and rest whenever they felt like it. My large Minerva usually blooms in early February, which is just her own schedule.

I may try placing a few of my pots in the basement this fall, and forcing a dormancy upon them... I've got a lot of bulbs, so taking a few out of the roundup will give me a little space for a couple of new ones! I can keep some on a rotating schedule, sort of!
