Is there such a thing as a fruit tree that is easy & attractive?
Comments (37)Aronia are definitely not for fresh eating. They do process into excellent jelly, juice, wine, etc. Most apples would not meet your requirements for carefree, but some crabapples are very disease and pest resistant, very compact and produce edible fruits. Jujube is something to consider, as most are hardy and they don't have natural pests around. Cornelian cherry, Cornus mas is another one to consider. Figs and pomegranates would not qualify as easy, as both would require considerable winter protection in 6a MA. Asian persimmons would also be very marginal. You may find one that will survive, but it may not ripen fruit. Pawpaw would be another possibility for something easy. Currants are not trees, but would do great and are easy, although I'm not sure if its legal to grow them in MA....See MoreWinter burying of fig trees
Comments (8)Hi Cuddy, doing it the ole fashion way in cold zone i see , it gives me memories as a child when my grandmother and her sons my uncles did this every season. For others that have read this please in past ignore i dont mean to bore anyone. ; ) You may get some ideas or not. They would wrap tree with burlap and twine and knock tree into long trench after digging around roots to loosen it up, then put a long piece of wood on top of it.They shoveled the dirt on top of the wood and in the end had a nice mound of dirt on the top similar looking but taller in height than a fresh grave at a cemetery. When the uncles would dig it up they eventualy came down to the wood with shovel lift the wood up this way they never hit the branches with shovel because the wood protect them.I only seen this done as a child , but if you use leaves you may conside to try the dry ones if you put them right on top of plant. Comments (12)They didn't mention these big black roaches... my mother lived in a house, planted squarely on top of a nest... they mostly like it outdoors till you put a house on their nest... you couldn't leave your shoes on the floor... and if you went the bathroom at night...crunch crunch crunch... the stuff of nightmares!:) I am not sure pesticides work anyway... once, later in my life, I'd have roach stomping parties in the driveway, after the house next door got covered in one of those huge covers and fumigated... the roaches just up and left.......See Moresafest way to deal with wood roaches?
Comments (1)The best means of controlling roaches, whether wood, American, German, or whatever, is Boric Acid powder sprinkled where they are living. Most all of the expensive, commercial controls contain Boric Acid. However, the single best wat to keep them from wandering around your house during the day is to seal any and all means of entry they can use to gain access to your house....See MoreLaura81
