O__O Roaches!!!

Yes, roaches..I live in south louisiana near a patch of woods..there will be roaches in my house...but this is crazy! A bunch of little black ones, no more than 1/8" long..they're attracted by and living in the soil! How can I get rid of them?..or AT LEAST reduce the numbers.(i'll be getting the roach poison..but what else?)

Are they dangerous to my plants(basil, lemon balm, peppermint, Cinnamon Basil, spearmint)??

Any way to do this WITHOUT killing my plants?? I can't really move my plants, nor do I want them,outside..

Any advice will be appreciated!

Alright..I found an online solution that meant making a mixture of 50% baking soda, and 50% sugar. SUpposedly, it combines with the acid in the roach's stomach to make it go blamo :p...and since roaches are cannbals, well..it's supposed to spread through the colony. I put some out last night..though it may take a while for me to notice any real difference.
These roaches are black and white(clear?) striped..and pretty small.

Are you sure they are roaches? I've never heard of roaches bothering plants. There are some bugs that look like roaches. Try to identify positively before you put down poison.

I live pretty deep in the woods and we have wood roaches and they love the soil and can be a booger to get rid of. They are black in color. A few years ago we logged some trees out and we had them like crazy for while. They did not harm any plants or anything, just drove me crazy. I just went to Wallyworld and got a spray and sprayed all around the house right next to the foundation, spray it pretty heavy or go twice. That took care of them from coming in. I can't remember the name of the spray but I didn't get the cheapest, I wanted something I know for sure would work. I didn't spay in on the plants. I also heard of sprinkling ground cinnamon around on the ground will keep roaches and ants away, never had tried it though. I do know Penny Royal is good for repelling fleas and other small insects, you could check into seeing if it's good for repelling roaches. Call the local garden center they can give sugjestions or even some home rememdy advice or your local extension office! Good luck!

I think spiders are very beautiful and interesting creatures and play a very important role in keeping the insect population in check...I especially love Whip Spiders, a Amblypygids, and would love to own one some day, every now and then I check the prices online and research care in owning one, but just haven't gotten around to getting one yet, but someday....I've only owned giant millipedes in the past. BUT...I hate two kinds of spiders...one is the yellow sack spider like shown in a post above cause they leave nasty bites and are everywhere in my area and they love being indoors, I always have to clean up their little web sleeping bags about every few weeks in my home... And worse of all, I hate Hobo spiders!!! They're the other side of the state's recluse spiders.... actually, I'm always arguing with people cause they think Hobo spiders are the recluse spiders, and I always tell them that there isn't any Recluses in this half of the states (and most still don't believe me, which drives me crazy for some reason lol)....what they see are hobo spiders, and cause they both are big and ugly and leave the same type of nasty bites, they seem the same. You mostly hear about the Recluse spider way more then anything about the Hobo spider. But I've done a lot of research on the hobo since I've had my share of run-ins with them, and they are very aggressive, but I guess that's why they are nick named 'the aggressive house spider'....and I wont hesitate to dispose of them!! I've had them jump at me, run towards me, one actually got up on it's back legs like it wanted to fight me lol, I'm actually quite scared of them!!

Arthurm I was pointing out the fact that a person with a PhD probably knows what the meaning and correct useage of the word sanctimonious would be. I don't think anyone who has posted to this thread advocates collecting wild orchids. Even the original poster did not say he was collecting wild orchids - only the ones native to his area. We do not know how he is collecting them nor can we judge what we don't actually know. As people, rather gently at first, tried to sway someone to ease up in his pronounciations, did the ranting and insults at us begin. No one mentioned collecting orchids in a national park. Collecting orchids on your own property to keep them from being wild pig food is totally acceptable. Here in the US, it is your property to do with as you see fit as long as something isn't on the endangered list. Wild pigs aren't endangered and neither are the common orchids in FL. Being self-righteous about something half a world away, with laws you don't know/understand seems very hypocritical to me. I can't tell you in Australia what do to with The Law According to Brooke - your country, your laws, your morals. I may not like them, condone them, even hate them, but I hope I have enough common decency and manners to treat you as an individual with respect. You may hate my phals, but I respect your love for other orchids or you wouldn't be on an orchid forum. Personally, I don't care for Dens but 50,000 plus, there are orchids for everyone. Brooke

come answer the phone for a couple of hours. All I do all day, every day is deal with poisonings, study poisons, read about poisons, read about historical poisonings, give advice on poisonings, prepare lectures on poisons-poison plant lecture next Thursday, read books about poison, go to seminars and training sessions about poison, listen to lectures on poison, my desk if covered with books, articles and note cards about......POISON! My purse is full of articles and note cards about POISON. last night I changed paths so I could FOLLOW the mosquito truck, spraying an organophosphate. Why? Because I know the skeeters are probably dead behind it and I, for one, do not want West Nile Fever or all those bites on me and the concentration is not high enough to have an impact on anything but the mosquitoes. Amazingly I am still alive. Me and the giant roaches, no impact on them either. Pyrethroids? If the can hits you in the head it might hurt you. Tally HO!

I am an animal lover and nature freak. The type of person who will go up to a spider and watch/ study it then leave it be (providing it's not on or in danger of getting into my bed). They are really interesting to me. They still are but... I just moved into a new apartment and things have changed. The spiders started appearing in late June. They would be in the bathroom and tub in the morning trying to climb out. Then the exterminator came to spray the complex and informed me that BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS are prevalent in this part of Kansas. And, that even though I don't see them probably still there. Well, since the extermination my spiders have increased more than 10 fold. Instead of one spider in the bathroom sink every couple of days there are now 3-8 spiders every day (THAT I SEE) and they are in every room (I have a small apartment). There are at least five seperate species, the biggest of which I am 95% sure is the brown recluse, and I see 1 to 2 of these every day. It's starting to give me "issues." Where as they didn't bother me before, I now jump when I see them. I avoid my closets, I shake out everything, and I just freakout at tiny things. I used to live in a state and area that was extremely high in black and brown widows. They didn't bother me at all. At least they are distinctive from a distance and for the most part they just stay in their webs. They don't come out at night to hunt. One of the main issues is that I have never lived in an area that is proned to brown recluse before. So I am not adept at identifying them. The fact that they look like any ordinary little brown spider until you get up close enough to examin for the fiddle shape just sucks. And all my other spiders... look just like little brown spiders to!!!! The even scarrier thing is that to have so many spiders... I have to have an amazingly huge bug population. I have only seen two bugs, period, in the apartment. So, the fact that I have only seen two bugs in what has to be a huge population... gotta mean that the spider population has to be much larger than what I see. Unless they're eating each other.. in which case, the population whould still have to be super huge cause there still enough to sustain the population and mate. While haveing me kill 3-8 everyday.

I hope you don't have pets that can be poisoned with roach killer... pesticides are awful... please don't use them.
I found roach hotels to be really effective... I lived in a "Roach Hotel" in San Francisco... they climbed our bed... roach hotels are just great.
Another thing... ancient cajun saying....
"Chickens in de yahd, mean no roaches in de house" :o)

What I got was safe for pets and children and safe to use in kitchens, it was made with pure orange peel extract, but I sure can't remember the name. Had a red and green label, I will look when I go to Walmart this week-end and see if they still have it and post it then. It worked really well, after a good soaking of it and I din't have to spray again.

Baking soda and sugar, that's pretty cool! That's stuff you have around the house! Do you sprinkle it dry or mix it with water and spray it?
That stuff I was talking about with orange extract...... hubby said we didn't get it at Walmart but Lowe's- it's called Bugs'R'Gone and 100% organic.

My mother had a large, favorite African Violet in a large pot that began to decline after a few years, but she couldn't figure out why. She decided to repot it and found a small colony of large black roaches living in the bottom of the pot and eating the roots. She made short work of the roach family, repoted the AV and all lived happily for many more years.

I got something called OrangeGuard that is supposed to be safe around food, humans and pets (but not aquatic animals). Supposed to repel roaches, fleas, ants, silverfish. Got it at either Home Depot or Lowes (cant remember). I also use something called RoachPruf. It is basically boric acid and you puff it into cracks and crevices. It it supposed to stick to the roaches and they carry it to the nest. Havent had a roach problem since I started using it (and I am a lousy housekeeper LOL!)

Pet chickens or pheasants WOULD be the most effective form of outdoor roach control.

Supposedly, if you can do this, I tried once, long time ago, don't remember if it worked... if you peel cucumbers, just the green part, no white on it, it's toxic to roaches... supposedly....

We do have chickens outside. I don't know how many for sure, but I"m guessing 3 roosters and about 20 hens.
The problem may or may not be gone. I haven't seen any roaches..but they could just be on the bottom of the tub.
The stie I found didn't specify, but I'm guessing they meant dry.

They didn't mention these big black roaches... my mother lived in a house, planted squarely on top of a nest... they mostly like it outdoors till you put a house on their nest... you couldn't leave your shoes on the floor... and if you went the bathroom at night...crunch crunch crunch... the stuff of nightmares!:)
I am not sure pesticides work anyway... once, later in my life, I'd have roach stomping parties in the driveway, after the house next door got covered in one of those huge covers and fumigated... the roaches just up and left....
