Ate my first WS tomatoes today ...

Harvested 5 toms from the 'patio" tomato plant, and darned if I didn't forget to take a pic before I chomped 'em! Wiped them off on my shirt and ate them like apples. They're nice medium-sized salad tomatoes - meaty, not watery at all and quite tasty.

I've got an elderly neighbor-friend around the corner on my floor; a few years ago, I started sharing my tomatoes, sweet peppers and scallions with her. She ranted and raved about them - how delicious they were, how so not like grocery store tomatoes, etc., etc. Since then, she starts asking in January if I've planted stuff out yet, even though she *knows* she won't see any tomatoes until July or August! Anyway, she got three of the five I picked today; I'll have to wait for her review, 'cause she's saving them for her Sunday salad.

For the 'patio' tomatoes, I stuck two plants in one hole and they are bearing like there is no tomorrow. Now I'm waiting on the 'kosovo' (thanks Trudi), which are large and heart-shaped and still very, very green! Can hardly wait to taste those!

Clap, clap, whistle, whistle! As much as I love my zillion flowers, eating the WS produce is my favorite - knowing I'm growing my own, organic veggies. I missed the peas this year - they yielded lots, I guess, when I was in the UK - my husband & son enjoyed them, though. I have beans coming in now, but no tomatoes yet, and the greenies are still pretty tiny on the plants, so I think it will be another couple of weeks yet.

I just got my first two tomatoes about a week ago. They are still only the size of a 50 cent piece so it may be a while for me. Our weather has been so backward this year I am surprised anything is growing. Congratulations!

Leisa, I didn't know the answer to your question, so I searched on Google and wouldn't you know, it directed me back to GW. The leaves of all edible peas are edible and are called pea shoots. If you search on pea shoots here, you will find lots of information. It never occurred to me to grow peas just for the shoots, but since DH can't eat the peas, but loves the flavor, I'm going to plant some just to harvest the sprouts. Thanks for the question - I learned something new. (We sped up the lettuces, etc, with a cold frame.)

I have three children and two out of three at least have already developed a fondness to growing their own food. My youngest enjoys Herbs and flowers like her mama and my thirteen year old does veggies with her daddy. They each have a bed of their own and grew their veggies from seed. Needless to say they are pretty darn good at it to. The squash in the photo below made a side that fed six people and they were absolutely delicious.

Love the feedback! And yes, the Wall-O-Waters did protect them from the May, Mother's Day, snow. No extra protection needed. Not the first time I've had snow on my W-O-W's. Actually the snow is not as bad as cold. It was around 30 when snowing, but we had a really cold night around the same time, mid to low 20's and the water in the W-O-W's was about half frozen. Kind of fun to tap on the side of a W-O-W and realize it's solid. They still protected fine and the Stupice fruit actually set while protected by the W-O-W.

Is that a sad sigh or an exasperated sigh, Carolyn? Lol. I actually picked it up at a local hardware store, and was excited to see that the tag mentioned that it was good for fried green tomatoes. I figured if I had one plant that I used specifically for that purpose, then I wouldn't have to break my heart every time I picked an unripe green tomato because I'm a newbie, and every ripe tomato is like a gift from the gods. If I had to choose, I would pick tomatillos over these Granny Smiths for salsa verde any day of the week. My favorite is a fresh tomatillo salsa with onions, lime juice, jalapenos or serranos, cilantro, and some avocado all whirred up in a food processor. But now I feel sort of bad that Granny isn't getting much love.

We have been having tomotoes right along since 4th of July along with all the other summer veggies. Our corn was short lived however - not a very good crop but what we had was really good. My hubby has been experimenting with various salsa recipes - he has canned up about 12 pints so far with varying degrees of hotness. Our pepper crop is fantastic. Yesterday I was able to freeze up 7 huge stuffed peppers - one pepper will serve both of us. All the hot peppers are producing on a regular basis. We have done up 30 or more pints of dill and sweet pickles. I love this time of year.....

Ooh, I'm jealous! I've been going out to check on my maters every day -sometimes twice a day, lol, like I expect them to turn red over a few hours! Impatiently awaiting mine - hopefully in the next few days.

Congrats on your harvest PV! The Kosovo tomatoes are worth the wait, they make big pink tomatoes which often form heart-shaped toms, you can have both round and heart-shped on the same plant. They are amazingly delicious, I think you will enjoy them as much as I have.
