I.D. help please..2 items (pix)

First shots are of a perennial I bought as a baby this spring at a church sale..supposed to be "Purple Obedience Plant". (umm, I don't think so..) Second plant just "arrived". I thought it was a weed, but I left it to see what it might become. Looks like a type of campanula, (bell flower), but not a very pretty one, until you tilt up a bell and look inside.

First one is liatris, also known as gay feather. Don't know the campanula but I do like it.

The first one is definitely Liatris Spicata. I have them and they are wonderful plants. Some bloom in white. They will reseed so if you want more look for similar tuffs of grass in the spring.

Don't know what the second one is but it is nice! :O)

I forget the exact measurements of mine, but I decided against using the smaller tile, because to my eye, they looked too small. Don't know where you are located, but I found the larger ones at Nemo Tile Co. in New York City. They have them in stock, in white and a few other colors, and you can pick them right up. I will say, however, that the smaller ones might be more historically accurate. In this particular bathroom, we were trying to stay true to the original bath, which did have hex tile, in the smaller size, but they were too broken up and too many pieces were missing for us to salvage. We also had to open up the whole floor anyway, so we had to replace. In looking for replacement tile, I just thought the larger ones looked better. Any particular reason you put the sink across from the range? There was a pretty exhaustive discussion of why not to do that in Small Kitchen & Dining Room thread, and also in the thread about what ranges are safest for kids (link below) (the title of that thread was sarcastic--the point was that kitchen design, not range choice, is what influences whether you have accidents/burns happening). The basic problem is that if the range and sink are across from each other, you are designing a kitchen in which accidents are waiting to happen because you force yourself to walk across the kitchen with hot water and hot and/or dirty pans. It's especially dangerous if you have pets or small kids or if pets/kids are ever guests in your house, but the danger is only reduced, not eliminated, if pets/kids are not an issue. A galley or modified galley like you're proposing is fine, but it is MUCH SAFER to put the sink and range on the same side, and the fridge/freezer on the opposite side. There is no safety advantage to putting the fridge on the same run as another fixture (i.e. sink or range), but there is a major advantage to putting the sink and range on the same run: you can empty your boiling pasta water, take pans to the sink after you use them, etc., without ever walking across the open floor. So there is no opportunity for kids or pets to get underfoot or in the way, or for you to slip, and drop hot things on kids/pets/the floor. Given your constraints, I would suggest putting the sink on the same run as the range and the wall oven on the fridge run. Putting a wall oven there is way less dangerous than putting the range there, first off because using a wall oven never involves pots of boiling water, and second because usually when people take things out of the oven the first thing they do is set them on the counter to cool--so stuff would come out of the wall oven and be set down beside it to cool; stuff would not be carried, hot, across the kitchen. But I think what would actually make the most sense here, since you have a longer run on the bottom, is to put DW, sink and range along the bottom, and move the fridge and freezer up to the top. They should probably go on the end where the wall oven is shown, so put either a pullout or a couple of feet of counter between them--from right to left it would go freezer, fridge, counter or pullout, wall oven, more counter. It looks great! In fact, picture perfect....keep going. And send your DD over here! I wish I had an artsy craftsy daughter! I have two sportsy girls (not a scrapbooking/painting/decorating bone in their bodies). It used to make me madly crazy when it was book report time--they would throw some pics on a cardboard piece and proclaim they were done. I would have spent 10 hours on something like that as a kid LOL. It probably drove MY mom crazy (she was doctor and couldn't care less about art!) The Quiet Moments color looks really nice--just a teaser I know, but can't wait to see the finished product...then are you done?

Slow- The basics are: Get some containers (I like Milk jugs), slice them in half horizontally, leaving a small portion under the handle intact (a hinge), and cut a few small holes in the bottom edge for drainage. Fill with potting soil- about 3-4" is good. Sow your seeds into the jug. Close the jug- secure with duct tape. Toss the cap in the garbage; you don't need it. Toss the jug outside IN THE WINTER. The seeds will germinate when they are ready, and you plant them out in the spring in little hunks. Like when they have a true set of leaves. You do this starting now (til whenever you wanna be done. I do it Dec/Jan/Feb/Mar...tender annuals like Zinnias I'll put out starting in April). When the weather starts to get warm, you simply open up the container a little at a time to give them a little more air (I suppose you could liken this to hardening off, but it's moreso to keep your seedlings from frying when the weather gets warm). That's pretty much it. You do have to keep tabs on moisture levels, but this whole method keeps your seeds from being eaten by critters, washed away in rain, moved by Ma Nature, etc. Gives them a little protected environment to grow in. Best of all: No hardening off, no indoor light setup...they are born in the cold, so they are already hardened off. Very cool way to grow stuff. You can see my shelving unit that I have outside for the jugs- upper right of the pic. Yep, they go right out in the snow all winter.

The second is likely a campanula, but there are many varietes so I am not sure which it is.

That second one looks like Campanula punctata to me. Check out the picture in this link. Most of them are pink, but they also come in white or near white with pink speckles inside.

butterfly's absolutely love your liatris, at first i didn't like it to well, it was small the first year, but i noticed the 2nd year it has a slight scent. and the butterflies love it!! ~Medo

Thanks dawiff! Now that I know what that Campanula is..what should I do with it? I have been vigorously deadheading. I don't mind having a "smallish" display. Interesting flower, though you have to lay on your back by the side of the bed, and look up.
Reminds me of crinolines! LOL!

Wendy, Keep deadheading that sucker, unless you want to save a few seed pods for trade. I've heard that they self-sow very aggressively.

Just want to mention that campanula punctata spreads by underground rhizomes, so even though deadheading is a prudent thing to do and will probably help, it will still spread.

Here's a shot of the whole bed. I have three other "island" beds in the yard, and a butterfly bed along my other fenceline. (The centaurea macrocephala was a real star this year). Also , the yellow verbascum nigrum in the back left of this shot exceeded my expectations.

I love that Centaurea! I had one, but I think one of our little weeder helpers pulled it up (of course, leaving behind weeds instead).

I sowed Verbascum N. this year. Sounds like it's a good one. The Knapweek is making me drool. LOL!! Thinking of sending seeds out east? Want some White Liatris seeds?? Perhaps? Maybe? Possibly?

I love those Centaurea! I had first year hearty sprouts last year and have nothing this year, so I think I will try again. Your beds are inspiring.

And I agree, those camps spread underground and can get out of control - even though they are beautiful.
