Why did I do it?

We were in HD today and a Passion vine ended up coming home with us. It was tagged as P. manicata but I think it's P. alata. I wasn't going to ever get another alata, as my first one didn't take the cold weather. But those big leathery leaves were irresistible. It was growing like mad, probably hadn't been in Phoenix long enough to get stressed. It was only $17 for a 5 gal. plant that must be 7 feet tall. Now the problem, wheeeerrre am I going to put it? This was not a smart move. :-/

OMG, Judy, I found the same plant today at HD! I thought it looked like Ruby Glow, too, so I left it to come home and look it up online. Did you and is it the same? Wait, it was the one tagged P. quadrangularis that I thought looked the same as P. alata, but their picture and description showed a purple, blue and white banded flower. The one tagged P. manicata was red and had different leaves - 3-lobed - at the HD I went to. What gives?

I think what gives is the usual HD screw-up. You simply can't trust that they will have things correctly marked. Mine didn't have a picture on it, just a tag stuck to the can. Mine has the large undivided leaves, not three-lobed. Even if it were P. manicata it would not have been a good choice for me, they apparently don't take hear OR cold. P. quadrangularis and P. alata are very similar, except alata has a redder flower. I think they have very similar cultural requirements, too.

I think I'll have a better idea what I have if it lives long enough to bloom. With this heat, who knows? :-(

Thanks, Ken. I was stalling on taking them out of the bags until I KNEW I could plant them. I unpacked the lilies I bought at the same time, and didnÃ¢ÂÂt get to them; now they are shriveling. I am actually favorably impressed. They are not dried out. They are obviously alive and healthy. The PaulÃ¢ÂÂs Glory (at left in the photo) in particular are larger than expected. I have no frame of reference, having never bought hosta bare root before. For all I know these may only make 2 leaves all summer. I think potting them up is a wise choice. That way I donÃ¢ÂÂt waste prime real estate and planting time. I bought some gallon hosta at a local $$$ nursery last fall at 80% off. I got literally a trunkload for $20. I can see which ones of those made it first (itÃ¢ÂÂs looking good so far, though itÃ¢ÂÂs hard to tell in between the daffodil foliage in that area, and I know they donÃ¢ÂÂt all pop up at the same time). Then I can plug in the survivors from the box into the gaps later. I will go soak them for an hour and pot them up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Well, I did mark the location for the veggie bed but the maters get brought in for cold spells and hails so that could get messy. I had written the names in either black sharpie marker or the paint sharpie markers, depending on the container colours. But, those are fading fast so I was thinking of making, um, gee, I dunno, some kind of tag. I was planning on buying a letter stamp set and then a bunch of cheap silverware from the thrift shop to use as more permanent tags but I haven't bought either yet. Well, I'd better figure something out because I am not going to buy a UV light, although, I might just giggle at that! J

The problem you have is that the links to the pictures are pointing to your hard drive. For example: canada_blk.gif is pointing to file:///D:/frontpagexpress/touchup%20attempt/canada_blk.gif, it should be just canada_blk.gif if it is in same directory as the html file. Also it doesn't look like the gif file is actually on the web site. At least not in the home directory of your web site. So you actually have two reasons why the pictures do not show on the web, but shows on your computer. 1. The link is incorrect, 2. The gif files are not on the web site. You said you used SmartFTP to upload the pages. You should use the publish from the File menu (I have Front Page, but I don't use it). That way I think it will resolve the links for you and get everything you need up to the web server in one shot. Also if you actually have a directory called 'touchup attempt', rename it so it does not have a space. Notice in the above example there is %20 (hex value of space) is in place of the space. Dan

dadoes, Thanks! I've seen you come thru for lots of us wanna bees! fordtech, I bought her set used from a couple who upgraded to a FL about 4 yrs. ago, so I'm guessing the set is about 6-8 yrs. old. My mom uses hot water often and has no mold in the boot etc... Now if I can look into how to tear it apart, I will look for inner mold and clean it for her. Do I have to have a rivet gun to release the existing rivets and replace with new strips? Just found out she sprayed WD-40 up and around the drum! She said she ran an empty cycle and no more squeaks. Time will tell, but I'm sure this isn't a fix. I'll ck out the teardown, thanks so much for helping me out!! Great day to all!

Nope, too cautious to buy without knowing more. I was enthralled by both, but I don't trust HD, so thought I'd look 'em up in Sunset or online to find out if they're even OK in this zone. But.... since you were so brave (foolhardy?), I guess I can be, too. First I think I'll look for a spot to plant it...

Oh Judy...welcome to MY world. It's so bad that if I find something I want, I have to decide "who" will get sacrificed to make room for a new plant. It can get pretty ugly.

Lets put blame where blame is due. It's not Home Repo that mis-labeled the plants. It's the supplier. I've noticed that a lot at Home Depot too lately. even in the succulents I'm finding terribly mislableled plants :(

Yes I'm sure it's the supplier mislabeling the plants and no one in HD knows enough to know the difference. :-( I don't understand the mislabeling problem. How hard can it be to keep accurate records. Oops, we won't talk about my booboos. ;-/
