Any late summer blooming North American Natives?

Just noticing with the exception of Lagerstroemia (Crepe Myrtle) the selection of July, August and September blooming North American Natives is pretty small while the East Asian natives seem to offer a dozen choices.

We should start a list. Any North American native trees or tree like shrubs that bloom after the Fourth of July you all can think of?

i dont know the latin on 7 sons.. nor if its native.. but i seem to recall it blooming late in the season .. but something tells me its chinese ...

and again .. same facts... carolina allspice ... if you really want to call those woody things flowers.. lol ....

aaah.. one out of two on the natives ...

what about those ugly things lining the freeways .... big fuzzy red things... oh.. thats a sumac ...

perhaps another post i should delete before sending.. lol

The book is older, but the classification doesn't change the characteristics. So now: Cimicifuga Racemosa = Actaea racemosa Cimicifuga americana = Actaea podocarpa Cimicifuga rubifolia = Actaea rubifolia Cimicifuga foetida is a european species. On the Actaea Racemosa, it mentioned that the flower have a sweet, fetid smell. On the other hand, there is a cultivar of Actaea Racemosa call Black Negligee which supposely have a tropical fruit smell. Unfortuantely, it's often listed as Cimicifuga Racemosa Black Negligee or Cimicifuga Simplex Bllack Negligee. I am unclear on if there is a difference between simplex and racemosa. Paul

Hey-I've wondered for many years what that plant was,and had never heard anyone refer to it....Here in my area,I've seen it many many times.It's always a very small plant,but definitly a bamboo!!I'm gonna go dig some of it this weekend!It appears to grow very slowly-and have never observed it growing in large stands.It is always growing in very small stands,rarely over 2,maybe 3 feet tall.Mark

Yes, could be red elm-Ulmus rubra, rock elm-U. thomasii, or the afore-mentioned U. americana, but there's not enough tree being shown to tell. Also not especially helpful is holding the leaf of one species in amongst the twigs and foliage of the other! Norway male is highly invasive, being only one tier under those species that produce fruit which gets carried for miles by birds and other wide-ranging carriers. It can really out-muscle a lot of species once it gets going in moist, shady areas. Sun or shade, of course. That's my ranking, anyway, and depending on where you are, NM might be the worst issue going on.

I have had lots of problems with S. leucantha also. I dug out a old huge Evergreen sumac that was in the wrong place. It left a huge hole and I enlarged that and added lots of compost and some decomposed granite sand. I also have dug in a homemade ollah for water and since last year, it has been happy ,. It returned and returned larger. I think it likes deep rich soil.

Hi Smives, where did you get the list? I need more sources before I just plant redbuds and dogwoods the rest of my life. Thanks for giving me some domestic choices.

Hamamelis virginiana - witch hazel blooms in the winter here if I recall. Perhaps I actually need one because of that. Thanks for bringing it up. Anyone know if any of the cultivars bloom in July or August?

Aesculus parviflora & Cephalanthus occidentalis are more bushes to me but that is too fine a line to cross them off. Perhaps I can prune a parviflora into a vase shape.

Cotinus obovatus is on my list for this spring. Does it bloom later up north? I am expecting spring flowers out of it and that EXCELLENT fall color. There must be cultivars I just know nothing about.

Rhus typhina! I am actually growing two which are turning into a half dozen. They're different. Totally forgot that someday they might flower with all that suckering going on. Thanks.

Aralia spinosa, Devils Walkingstick fits perfectly.

Does Franklinia alatamaha bloom most of the summer? I have been considering trying one for some time. Another good choice.

Oxydendrum arboreum, Sourwood. After killing a couple I must have blocked it from memory.

Gordonia lasianthus just isn't cold hardy here.

Magnolia virginiana, Sweetbay Magnolia totally counts. I just don't like it.

Aesculus parviflora is a small tree. Mine at 2' tall already looks more like a tree then many of my other small trees I have. I can tell it doesn't have much wind tolerance. It leafed out VERY early but dropped early Sept before any other tree.

They bloom in late May to early June around here.

I'd like to see a list of non-natives as well. I only know of a couple!

You might be thinking of Hamamelis vernalis? H. virginiana should be flowering around leaf drop.

I mentioned American Smoketree because of the panicles, not so much for the flowers.

I don't have personal experience with Franklinia.

The list started with plants I know well and have grown and added plants I have heard of or seen in the landscape during travels.

Cedar Elm. However its blooms are nearly un-noticeable.
