late summer and fall flowers
Comments (19)Caryopteris holds off until August in my garden and attracts butterflies by the hundreds. Mine is planted between two Montauk Daisies (aka Nippon Daisies). The caryopteris is just winding down as the daisies take over. For anyone who's not grown this plant...it's wonderful! It's a sub-shrub (like lavender gaura, Russian sage, etc.) and grows to a 4'x4' globe with thick foliage/stems...almost like a succulent. I prune mine down twice/season and it is always covered with hundreds of 3-4" white daisies Labor Day through Halloween. Also, hardy hibiscus will bloom well into late September...early October here. Sedums have faded by mid-August but still I leave the flower heads standing because I think they're attractive in their own right. I rely heavily on berry producing shrubs, foliage, & ornamental grasses for late season color. By mid-September to early October...my perennials are winding down...and so is their gardener!...See MoreGreat Late Summer Blooming Perennials
Comments (5)The Rozanne = 'Gerwat' geranium has been a hit with many and is at outlets now. Otherwise Frikart asters are a classic, although I have sometimes had these not come back in spring - making sure drainage is good throughout the year may be the key. We had the 'Goldsturm' coneflower here for many years but then something started to chew away sections of the rays ("petals") and I got tired of their cheesy yellow coloring. But quite a smart-looking plant otherwise, and it has leaves present during winter....See MoreYour Favorite Long Blooming Perennials?
Comments (24)OK, I'll give them additional thought. :) the screaming acid chartreuse doesn't bother me. It is the alien form. I have seen them in California gardens looking wonderful but not here. I grew up in Arizona and now that I am in Portland, I like my garden to look like Portland if that makes sense? I LOVE Arizona and would move back in a heartbeat if DH would go but he won't. I LOVE the desert. LOVE tropical/arid plants but think they look funny here out in the landscape for the most part. I think Euphorbias and most succulents look better in gardens South or at least with houses whose architecture is better suited. I've seen some gorgeous stucco cottages with tons of tropical/succulent plants in the PNW that are awesome but my house just doesn't. I did get a small greenhouse for my birthday and am going to fill it with tropical plants so I can go out and putter or sit when it rains here. I'm totally full up on trees, I actually have too many but can't bear to edit, yet. I've got a Prunus x bleiriana that has been nothing but diseased and infested and ice damaged since day one. It was a present from my DH the first birthday after we bought this house (which had no trees at all, or shrubs other than Laurel for that matter) and the first tree we planted. I'm darn near full up on shrubs and subshrubs too. I've ripped out several this year to make way for new favorites. :) I can always squeeze in one more dwarf conifer or Rhodie...or heather or Daphne....:)...See MoreMy top favorite late season perennials
Comments (20)You have good taste if you like that Penstemon ;-). But good luck finding it! I have looked and looked without success for an online source. I finally found it at a nursery two hours driving distance from me and I bought them out, nine plants in 4" pots. They don't do mail order. Sour Grapes has extraordinary attributes IMO - Flower color goes with absolutely everything, -Flowers continuously from mid-May through mid-December or close, even with lazy deadheading, -Handsome red purple stems, -Maintains a firmly upright habit, unlike many which sprawl and invade nearby plants, -Puts energy into flowering, not growing a ton of foliage, -Puts a lie to what I've read that Penstemons are short lived. I have another Sour Grapes, ordered erroneously because I thought it was "my" Sour Grapes, which bloomed twice this summer and seems to put all its effort into growing foliage and that foliage grows like an octopus in all directions. It has smaller Blue Violet flowers. Another named Sour Grapes is nearly white with pink or lavender edges. . I think the main reason "my" Sour Grapes is difficult to find is by accident, I think it probably got shoved aside by the accident of having others with the same name. i have no idea how hardy it is. And, no, I don't mulch it....See Morewantonamara Z8 CenTex
