Deer, groundhogs and even chipmunks will go for tulip bulbs and the new foliage on tulips when they come up. I find that deer/rabbit repellant spray after planting and as the leaves emerge keeps them from eating the plants. I also use it on azaleas, rhododendrons, and other plants they like to graze during the winter. Otherwise I would have no blooms in the Spring.

I just finished planting 100 crocus and hyacinth and will try the pepper trick. I'll give them a good drink tomorrow then sprinkle pepper over them. Our yard is littered with rabbit droppings so I'm sure they will try to attack the bulbs. We have blue grama grass (We're in Colorado and it's a native grass) and I don't mind them eating the grass, just not the bulbs.

Darn squirrels have decimated my tulips. They find one they like, pull over the stem and eat only half the petals before moving to the next and they destry them in color order: yellow, orange, red.
