Pictures of Magnolia in original environment
Comments (8)Dave, I know the Rhododendrons of the Hengduan Mountain look surreal. It seems to be from a fairytale. But it is real. I thought GW has few visitors. But my photobucket account recorded 300 visits of the pictures here. Wow, good business GW! Image below: the environment that allows so many trees with bizarre reproduction needs to survive....See MoreHow do ficus rubiginosa/benghalensis do here in Phoenix?
Comments (5)If you want to go look at some benghalensis, you should go to the zoo. They have several trees and several variations. There are also other types of ficus all over the place. The biggest one that I have seen in the valley is in the lakes neighborhood south of baseline between Rural and McKlintock. It hangs over an ally that runs along houses that are on the south side of the southern most lakes on the west side of the development. It is REALLY big. I asked a guy that lives by it about it. He thought it was a magnolia and said that rumor has it that one of the original tenants of an apartment complex on the other side of the fence planted it when the area was developed. There are quite a few unusual ficus in that neighborhood. There are also some benghalensis that Scottsdale planted near the Osborn hospital. I'm not sure, but I think that the beautiful ficus planted in front of the Vine restaurant in Tempe on Apache may be a rubiginosa (if not, perhaps a macrophylla?) I always though it was just another elastica until a got a closer look. GREAT TRUNK! Looks twisted and knarly. If anyone knows for sure what type of ficus that tree is, please divulge the information. PenBuilder...See MoreTexas Phoenix Palm Decline Spreading to Sabal Palms
Comments (2)Same as the fig whitefly that is decimating Ficus in Broward. Media attention has been non-existent and many hedges are far too gone to save at this point. Yeah, yeah, many people hate Ficus hedges, me included, but the whitefly affects the whole genus which is far more than F. benjamina....See MoreCretan Date Palm - Phoenix theophrasti
Comments (16)I now have 8 of them growing here in Lakeland. We're certainly a solid zone 9a, but definitely not close to a zone 10a like St. Petersburg, or the more southerly locales. Mine have grown pretty well with minimal care. They just sit out in the sun and put leaves out, not to mention the usual 20 feet of roots for a 2 foot plant. I've heard that they typically sucker early and often. My seeds were from a seller in Australia. I bought 35 seeds, but about 20 of them succumbed to mold. When you start them, make sure the dirt is barely moist....See MoreZill
