On a happy note (I just posted some photos of my sad tomato plants) my cucumber and watermelon plants seem to be doing well.

Watermelon ~ the baby is only about the size of a pencil eraser, but I'm still excited!

Pickling Cucumbers ~ have this growing up through my Donut Peach tree. They about the thickness of a dry eraser marker and 2" long

Japanese Cucumbers ~ still very little, about an inch and very thin, but you can tell they're cukes!

Those babies are cute. Won't be too long now and you'll get some biggies out of that vine. Is that the Black Diamond?

Nice looking cukes, wish I had thought far enough ahead to plant "pickling" cukes instead of slicers :(

Our slicers are getting HUGE, gotta get some pics to share, just hate digging in their with all them itchy hairs LOL

lisalu - do you have kids? My kids love when I bread and fry zucchini slices. They would eat them every day. Now, no doubt it is the breading and oil that makes them so tasty to the kids, but still - to hear "More squash please!" or "Mom, Monica's hogging all the squash!" is music to a mother's ears. You can make the slices fairly thick, and so a small zucchini (6 - 7 inches) could give you a handful of slices - The kids would happily eat up several zucchinis this way. You can also slice them into the egg/milk a day or two before, if you want to harvest several days worth of zucchini and then fry it all in one go. Marinated and grilled sliced zucchini is tasty for most grownups. It's easy. Ok, don't lob a snowball at my head but for some reason this year I am not in the whiney pre-spring stage. This winter has seemed to go by fast and while I am of course looking forward to spring, I am not in the least unhappy with winter. We're going through some of our coldest temperatures right now as usual, with overnights well below zero - but I'm ok. What I am most happy about is that suddenly the days seem appreciably longer. I love being able to watch the sunset through the bare trees *from home!* instead of seeing a bit of it as I drive my 40 minute commute home and then have it be darkening as I pull in the drive. Still, a pot of mini roses to fuss with wouldn't be a bad thing at all. I've done that before and ended up with as many as 5 nice little plants that went outdoors in spring to become a pretty border to my front flower bed. Hmmm...I'll have to go shopping after work today. :-)

Speaking of lying in a casket with "all the good stuff" piled around you....one of my favorite possessions is an old concrete water trough that my husband moved here for me from our old place, which had been a dairy. Not exactly an easy feat, mind you. It is just over 10' long and 3 1/2' wide and has 8" thick sides. I love that old trough...was poured with boards for a mold and you can see the faint outline of the wood grain in it, and whoever did it, did a great job and beveled the edge. It is poured with finely crushed oyster shell and green moss grows on it. I go out and lovingly stroke it and splash water onto the moss. Of all my junk, I think I love it the most. I had told my husband I didn't want to be buried when I died...unless I could be buried here on the place. I'm just too "queer", as my mother said about me, to go in a cemetary with all those other people...so I told him, put me in the trough and then pour a layer of concrete over me, and put the waterlilies and water back in. A second idea...put me in the trough, and pile in as much of my old junk as you can, and pour in concrete. Top off with my hundreds of old marbles. What a lovely tomb that would be! :))

I'm not going to beat this horse much longer... but here's my take on this and it applies to a larger conversation: If an end user wants the benefit of expert knowledge and good service, then by all means I think they should enlist the help of a local water treatment service and expect to pay for that expertise and service. If an end user has reasonably simple needs and is willing to do some research and learn, get his/her hands dirty, and have something that does a "pretty good job" for significantly less money - then an online purchase of a water softener can be an option. I feel like these softeners on Amazon provide a good value, using a good valve and otherwise commodity parts. They offer a higher-quality and better-service alternative to going to a big box store and getting something. However, they shouldn't be measured using the same yardstick as a local treatment expert. What makes me angry are the outfits that charge like they are attorneys, will lecture you about being professionals when they are questioned about the rate, and still not deliver the expertise or service. Case in point is the user on here who was charged $700 to hook up a water softener and they didn't include an air gap in the drain. Also, the man who had lost all of his resin in his kinetico water softener twice after paying big to have it fixed once. RayMO, The feedback from the purchasers of the unit that you purchased has been uniformly very positive - the only negatives were from people who had really unrealistic expectations of the install process. I think that you will be happy with your purchase. I have been really pleased with mine.

Thank you Mangled, I am so excited. I've already had 2 pickling cukes, remember the salad I posted before? I'm not sure of the watermelon ~ I bought the transplant and it was just marked "watermelon". My family LOVES watermelon so I figured I couldn't go wrong with it. And yes, post some pics!

Congrats! In my opinion those plants are both lovely, even if they didn't produce anything at all. I especially like the shape of those watermelon leaves. It's hard to conceive that something so large can come out of such tiny pods. Amazing!

What I found so discouraging about watermelons is that you think you have babies forming but they aren't really fertilized and just drop off. You have to have male flowers blooming at the same time as females to get perma-babies. I hope that's what yours are because it's so sad when they aren't.

Congratulations! The pics are really fun. Keep us posted! Hopefully, like Judy mentioned, your watermelon bloom got pollinated and your baby will swell up in no time. I always hand-pollinate when there are male and female blooms present at the same time (just in case the bees missed the opportunity, LOL). I've even been known to collect pollen and put in the fridge for later use in case I don't have any open when a female bloom opens. I know, I know, obsessive!

In any case, everything looks great. Can't wait to see a pic of a big plate of watermelon slices!
