Big Dude (or Big Old Dude), I must have over 100 seeds in the hopper of Sovereign Orange. Maybe more. Remember that post I made a couple weeks ago about those huge PINK bulbs I bought - and they all turned out Halloween ORANGE? Well, as each pumpkin has bloomed, I've been out there dutifully with the paint brush having sex with the flowers! Hey, a girl has her needs! Just following everything I have learned on this forum. Anyway, I've had incredibly GREAT results - seed pods on all FIVE flower heads (wrong terminology, I'm sure) times four plants and things look GOOD! These are all self-pollinations, so they should be fairly true Orange Sovereign. I probably should not count my seeds before they hatch, but I expect delivery within the next 20-30 days. Email me your address and I'll send you some. Not the same as a fully developed bulb, to be sure, and I appreciate your loss, but I'll be glad to share.

Wow...I've never seen so much vigor in a "pregnant" Amaryllis. Congratulations love_the_yard! I can't wait till I can bring my Amaryllises out of the house...lows is till in 30s and 40s here.

I will be happy to share seeds with anyone who likes orange (ugh!). I know *I* won't be replanting them!

OooooooooKkkkkkk Love_the_yard....Orange is my favorite color!!! Maybe it's my Asian heritage...liking bold and bright colors. SEND them over...lol. I am observing some flowers that I pollinated last week though...they may have a good chance of having pink in them. I played around with Charisma's pollen and put them in a Green Goddess (and vice versa)and Appleblossom bloom. I know, I know...Appleblossom is sterile. But hey, the flower was gonna wilt anyway. If these pollinations give me good results...I'll send u some seeds too...hopefully pinks!

Mariava - I'd be more than happy to share some pumpkin seeds... er, I mean amaryllis seeds with you! Please send me an email with your mailing address and they'll be on the way as soon as they are ripe. (I will probably have to post more pictures here just before asking you more experienced folks if they ARE ripe!! Haha!)

I usualy leave only two pods on a stem.Why? I do not know, just an instinct.
How does it effect the plant.

I've noticed that the first 2 pods pollinated are the most likely to produce the best count of seeds. As the pod number increases,the number of seeds decreases. It's not unusual for the last pods set on a big batch to drop off. The plant may just be pruneing itself,rather like a fruit tree that drops half it's set so that the other half may grow well. Lora

I don't have enough experience but when the rest of the pods broke when a flower fell over, I only had 1 good pod left making 45 seeds and I got a 85% germination (34 sprouts). I was able to get 225 seeds from another plant and only got 32% germination (72 sprouts).

See, I did not know that. Should I remove some of the seed pods now? Or will it make matters worse? What do you recommend?

Love_the_yard...If I were you I'd let Mother Nature to decide. I wouldn't have the guts to cut off a pregnant seedpod anyway. "If it's meant to be...it's meant to be..."

Wow this is my first time to come to this site,even though i've been a member of GW for many years.I've learned so much today already.I have several amarylis,sorry i don't know the names of any of them.Didn't know that pod left behind after flowering had seeds in it.Just assumed i had to have a bulb to get a flower.Shows how much i know about them,right???

Well i can see my butt getting wider as i spend more time in this chair reading about all your amarylis.

Hello Kathi and welcome!

My first time, so of course I'm like a kid at Christmas! Of the pictures I showed you before, quite a few of the seed pods stopped developing. I was sad but told myself I should not have counted those chickens before they hatched. There were three more left - then they suddenly turned brown, and I thought darn, I lost those, too. But no! They were ripe! The first pod just opened this afternoon, and I got 18 seeds. They are fresh... and PLUMP! I never knew that fresh ones are soft and plump because the ones I have received from internet orders are always flat. So something else I never knew about fresh seeds. I guess 18 seeds is fewer than most of you experts get, but not bad for a first-time pollinator and first-time bulb (well... for all I know - she's not talking! Haha!)

I still have quite a few seed pod hoppers out there. I guess we'll see how many I get by the end of the summer.

Only one person ever sent me an email with an address for seeds (Clare in California) so those will go out tomorrow. I never did hear from BigOlDude and I haven't seen him post in this forum since the first post in this thread.

Oh my gosh, this is SO much more rewarding than my real job. Ok, here are the pictures:

Hi Plant Guy,

These are Orange Sovereign self-crosses, so won't the look pretty similar to the parents? I really don't care for orange - and these bulbs were SUPPOSED to be pink when I bought them - so I'm giving all these seeds away. I haven't had any luck with buying pink bulbs, so I'm nurturing some of *Lora's* seeds for three years, LOL!!!!

By the way, harvested the second two pods today, but haven't counted the seeds, yet.

You would be surprised by the results you get from selfing. Amaryllis do not breed true, so you might not get what you expected.
