Xuan, thank you for sharing glimpses inside Vietnam with us. I've seen a number of your photos of your home and your home village and they are quite lovely. It really appears to be quite beautiful countryside.

I've said it before, but if gardeners ruled the world, it would not only be a beautiful place, but a peaceful one at that!

It's a lovely picture, Xuan! Very "country" and wonderfully old fashioned! It just goes to show that you don't need all the new technology when you garden... the old ways are sometimes the best ways!

I should have seeds relatively soon... and I'll send them on to your carrier when they're ready. My seed pods are maturing very slowly, and I still have more that aren't ready yet. Soon, though! :-)

Very nice photos, it reminds me of the rice paddies in my country( South Korea) years ago but I gotta tell you I've never seen the wheel for use in irrigation. So many rice paddies are replaced with the 15-20 story high rises when I went back to Korea 4 years ago.

I agree with Cindee... I am always delighted by your photos of Vietnam! It's a lovely country, Xuan, and some day I hope to travel there.

I believe the animals are some sort of oxen or water buffalo, though I'm not sure exactly. The mountains in the background are stunning! So different from Central Illinois, where everything is relatively flat and featureless!

larschar, those animals are, like Jodi has said, water buffaloes. Our farmers are still using them to plough the rice paddies. Everything in this village is still very rustic, very 'traditional', which is so endearing to me. Guess I'm kinda "nostalgic" these days being older... :-)

Cindee, I do feel the same closeness when I see photos of yours or Jodi's garden as they make me feel as if I were there personally.

The pictures bring back a lot of memories. Many times I saw a man working the irrigation devices. It is a beautiful country. The coastal area and the South China Sea are wonderful too.

Some of my favorite pictures are of your second home in the mountain region, Xuan... the backdrop to your garden pictures are so lovely... there's always a misty presence to the mountains, like you could reach out and feel the clouds. Just the fact that you can grow native orchids outdoors all year long is amazing! And I was fascinated by the quick growth of your vegetable garden last year! Vietnam is definitely a gardener's paradise... especially if you love tropical plants!

I find your photos especially nice when it's winter here... and everything is buried under snow! They make me feel warm inside... even as the frigid winds blow outside!

This method of lifting water to a higher level with animal power was quite common here, until the arrival of diesel engine and pumps.
To my surprise in your video the wheel is driven by PETER engine (from its noise). If so then why not the pump.

In this case, the wheel is driven by the force of the running water in the river. You can see that people have made a "wall" by bamboo sticks in the river bed across the river width to force water to flow through the narrow opening on the left where they positioned the wheel. Having been stopped by the "wall", the water would move faster and more powerful at the opening, thereby causing the wheel to turn.
So, it's a kind of 'eternal power', I guess... :-) The noise you heard was from the rushing water and from pouring water, actually. No pump. Maybe in this age of 'global warming' this method should be used more to save us from environmental pollution...LOL!
