Advice on Two Red Maple Species

Pamchesbay

I'm working on the seedling list for my reforestation project, seedlings will be planted in early to mid December. One supplier offers red maple (Acer rubrum) and Drummond maple (Acer rubrum var. drummondii) seedlings. I've googled but haven't found information about the differences between the two re: growth, culture, appearance, spring flowers, or fall leaf color. I found a couple of short articles from TX and LA papers that recommended the Drummond maple as a good shade tree.

Does anyone have experience with these trees? Can you fill in the blanks? Which do you prefer and why?

Many thanks,

Pam
