Hi All

Thought I would join in. I have 2 1/2 acres in southeastern AZ zone 7. I have read and learned from postings to site on and off for awhile. I am looking forward retiring this November and will start planting some fruit trees and expanding my vegetable garden. Been googling and reading up on fruit tree varieties and planning. I came across information on UC Davis as a repository of fruit tree varieties and information that fruit tree cutting are available. Is anyone reading this forum familiar with this service? I have read that some fruit trees can be started from hardwood cuttings (pomegranates, mulberries). I would like read about anyone attempts, successes or failures.

Thank You campv. I took a look and the fruit and orchard forum looks pretty active, I will pot there also. I was hoping to get information from folks closer to home.

Hello, I am new to the forum and gardening and have been reading all of the different posts for how to work and have a bountiful harvest. This is my first year and I am growing flowers and vegetables. Right now I have corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, bush beans, pole beans, black-eye peas, sweet peas, Lima beans, wax beans, cucumbers, green peppers, spaghetti squash, bush squash, tomatoes, two banana trees, collards, turnips, lettuce, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, onions, and broccoli. I tried to grow a little of everything to see what will do well and so far everyone's tips and methods is making me see some form of progress. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for being so nice and sharing your gardening experience it has really given me inspiration and hope.

thanks for the nice replys. i'm lucky to have lots of space to garden, a good climate zone, and many resources. i gardened much as a kid growing up. i remember the first time making a garden. i was probably 8 or 9 and asked my dad to help me make a garden. i had watched the neighbor till up some ground and i really enjoyed watching him garden. i was confused when dad handed me a shovel. dad always had a way of teaching me old school so that i would apreciate things more. this is the first year i put the shovel down and spent 40 bucks to rent a tiller. i tried to show my daughter the shovel method the last few years but she'll probably not remember it. anyway, thanks for the replys. i'm all about being outside, whether fishing, hunting or gardening. they all complement each other. the fish carcasses make excellent fertilizer, we have 40 acres of hunting land where gardening is important for plots. i also crabfish, and the crab shells are an excellent source of calcium when composted, and to make the full turn, the vegetables are a great side dish to the cooked seafood. just tonight some of the tomatoe slices went on some oyster poboys with a nice side of tomatoe and cuke salad. hopefully our seafood industry will survive this mess we have going on down here.

Sue, you go to "account", and then "privacy" and there are 5 subgroups you can choose from. You go into each of them, and change from the default to the selection you want, and then you click on "save". I don't think you'll have a problem being selected into the group... and IF you did, it would only because because the request wasn't noticed right away. It's my understanding that KT members aren't "filtered" to see who of us will be accepted, just that it's a private group to KT members only. Hope I explained that well.

Welcome to the forum, we hope you'll post often. I LOVE southeastern Arizona and even if we can't help you with specifics, we'd love to see and how what you do in your garden and how it works out. I'm sure we have at least a few members from your part of the state, and even if not, post often and share what's going on! Happy gardening and welcome again!

Chihauhan desert? Cold. Know your elevation. Short season. Greenhouses and row covers.

I'd look up any "local" nurseries and garden clubs. Definitely be some farms and ranches out there. They can recommend varieties and share scions. Of course scions are only good if you have something to graft onto. Yes, pomegranates and figs are grown from cuttings and there are cold hardy versions of both.

Know your Co. Coop Extension and Master Gardeners. They may or may not be very active. Online publications can be quite helpful.

As for the USDA scion program the application ended Nov.1st. Try this year. You have to hunt for what is available. And we mere taxpayers are at the end of the request list in priority. You cannot get what is already commercially available.

I live 15 miles south of Safford, elevation 3500 feet, I am thinking around 500 chill hours. Right in the middle of every thing. On the line separating the Sonoran Desert from Chihauhan Desert, right on the USDA line between 7 and 8. Also on the the sunset line that splits zones 10 and 12. It is a good size property, but soil is taking a lot of work, alkaline with hard pan and poor drainage. It will take up a lot of my time when I retire.

Interesting. My 12.5 acres is in Sunizona @ 4,300' & my zone is 8a. I'm lucky because my soil is alluvial with great drainage & no native Mesquite. People in this area grow stone fruits & LOTS of grapes.
I'm growing 9 Jujubes & 2 Chilean Mesquites so far. We are growing out Chestnut Oaks, Honey Locusts, Chickasaw (2 Types) plums & other stuff in pots here in Phoenix to add later. We plan on adding some wild plums across the back along Turkey Creek to feed the wildlife too.
We have been using Permaculture technics. I need to figure out how to manage the summer weeds, Gourds, & wild flowers.
