I never really did figure that out after about a month of trying, so I canceled it. I hope you do better then I did.

here is the main problem with how the infections are happening in facebook, there are bad or sloppy codes in the facebook application which allows hackers to get into the application and replace code for things that would look like something innocent with something not so innocent. for example you might see that there is a link you think is going to lead you to say someones pictures and you think ok no problem and click on the link well below the surface that click you just did really was not to send you to someones pictures it was instead to send you to a bad site that by visiting alone, some people could get infected or have the pop ups start to hit you that you can not x out of with out installing something on your pc. And there are lots of little applications for facebook and myspace these are written by anyone and you have no idea what they actually wrote into that code. Facebook and myspace really don't care all they want is people they are not real worried about protecting anyone. Which is exactly why they made it so easy to accidentally send out your entire address book, good way to get more people. And why do they want people and addresses? gee hum could it be to harvest information and sell it? So even doing things you think surely will not harm you can, that is what happened to my friend, someone she thought she knew sent her a link, she clicked on it, it was not really a link to someones pictures at all and she got badly infected. This is like the clickjacking we had talked about at one time. there are various methods being used on those social networking sites. In fact if you google facebook virus you will get lots of info as well as directions on exactly how to create them! Lovely. Just be really careful on any of those kinds of sites. Unfortunately a lot of the things that are the infections on those sites are not necessarily ones that your AV will catch. Lots and lots of people have got that dreaded antivirusxp 2009 infection from there and that even has a rootkit in it in some of its forms. I love Facebook. My facebook friends include some of my current friends, old friends that I had lost track of - people that I had often wondered how they were - what they were up to, etc. and LOTS of family - my mom, my dad, my sister, aunts, uncles, cousins.... my great aunt is on Facebook and she's in her 80s. I have 18 people in my list of friends who are over 50 (I just went and counted), so it really isn't just for younger people. I do have photo albums on my page, but they're only viewable by my friends, and their is no one in my "friends" that I wouldn't feel comfortable showing photo albums to if they were visiting my house. One thing that I think is great about it is that you can make your Facebook profile as public OR as private as you want it to be. My mom is in Italy right now, and she's posting pictures from her trip every few days on her page. She only has about 10 people on her list, but they're all people that she wants to share her photos with, and Facebook is a great way to do it easily. Only people that you accept as your friend can check out your profile, and you can put as much or as little on your profile as you want.

I rarely visit Facebook these days, but I, too, turned off all of the notifications about games my friends were playing. First, it was annoying. Second, I absolutely can't believe how much time some of them spend on Facebook games! I mean, these are mature, level-headed people with lives - yet it was hours and hours and hours. I think some are probably addicted. In my opinion, there are so many more constructive things people can do with those hours they're spending on those games. I'm not even saying they shouldn't play the games at all. But man! I wanted to suggest that they spend some of that time volunteering or something else good if they didn't have anything else to do but play those games. None of my business, so I just shook my head, tried to understand why they might do it, and stopped looking. Suzieque

Very well written and very true. I have a cell phone for my dog (just in case) - and I keep it turned off and store it in a cupboard in the other room - when the battery needs charging it never shuts up. No one has the number except my husband who can't remember it. We have a plug-in land line (worked out well during that major power outage a few years back). We do not belong to Facebook or any other social networking forum. We also do not have a GPS that would no doubt result in us turning into someone's house. We have never had a microwave. Heck I could live with a rotary phone. Actually sometimes that is the only way you can reach a company these days since every answer but the one you want is automated - but if you have a rotary phone you can dial a different number - so sometimes I "pretend" - but then confess. I unplug our land-line phone at night due to all of the computer calls that seem go until late at night and start again in the early a.m. What I really hate is when I pick up the phone and it is a computer call and you can't press the disconnect - it just keeps going until finished. I signed us up for the Do Not Call program a few years ago - but it is a joke - doesn't legally apply to so many of the callers - and others just ignore the law and call anyway. Kids are spending too much time on their various electronic devices - twittering, tweeting etc. - no sleeping - not studying - out of hand.

I finally broke down and joined a few weeks ago and I enjoy Facebook. It's not as 'social' as I thought but it's a nice centralized way to keep in touch with people. One of my other message boards moved to Facebook and it's easier to get an e-mail whenever anything new is posted than to keep checking a message board (that one is not as big and busy as this one).

im on fb too. mostly for farmville and other such things. its really not to hard to figure out, i had to have my 13 yr old neice show me. anything you post on your wall automatically goes to youre profile but stays on the main one. yep im sure thats no help lol.

I am also on Facebook- I have quite a few KT friends there! If anyone would like to add me as a friend you can email me through gardenweb and I will send you my info. I love reading what everyone is up to and of course seeing the photos that are shared.

One thing you can do is to email people you're interested in "friending" through the Garden Web and ask them to send you their info for it. Another way is to join the KT facebook group and you'll see a lot (but not all) of people you know, and you can request that they be your friend.

I'm having great fun with some of my high school friends. We send a f/b message to our whole group, and then we keep hitting "reply to all" and commenting- and it's private to our group alone when we do it that way. Some of my friends are very funny- we find this to be a very entertaining past time. I know you can do that by email too, but you can incorporate your wall, if you want. I never do apps.

Paula, in the search bar at the top of FB page, type in The Kitchen Table Gang and it will bring you to that page. You will have to confirmed before you can post there, but it won't take long. There it has a list of people's KT names and FB names.

I tried it for a bit, but when I saw a friend's "friends" were listed by full names and where they live......well, waaaay too much information. I saw alot of this info about KT members. I was also able to see all sorts of conversations which were not directed at me and really none of my business. I closed my account.

You can adjust your settings to various privacy levels. People who really don't want info out there set their settings so that the people who can view their info is limited- if it can be viewed at all. I have mine set so that only friends of friends can find me, not the general public. Because I control who I let in, I'm less private than I would be if my profile was more open. As for the conversations you could see... that's just your "wall". People only post info there that they don't expect to be private. It's like having a conversation at a coffee shop, or any public place.

To those confused about the profile wall page. The news page which you see on your own site only has everything you posted and all that others posted that are your friends. But that page isn't seen by all. When you visit anothers site you see their wall not their news page. I am Audrey Taylor on facebook

kim_okla, click on "Groups" on the left side of your FB page, and you'll probably see The Kitchen Table Gang as one of your groups now.

Susan, I know there are different ways to do the privacy settings, but I still don't know HOW to do it. The one I see most on other pages is "XXXX only shares some of her profile information with everyone. If you know XXXX, send her a message or add her as a friend."

Okay, so you find the KT Group, which I haven't looked for yet, and you have to ask to join? Suppose nobody asks you?

Sue, you go to "account", and then "privacy" and there are 5 subgroups you can choose from. You go into each of them, and change from the default to the selection you want, and then you click on "save".

I don't think you'll have a problem being selected into the group... and IF you did, it would only because because the request wasn't noticed right away. It's my understanding that KT members aren't "filtered" to see who of us will be accepted, just that it's a private group to KT members only. Hope I explained that well.

I am one of the administrators of the Kitchen Table Gang. There have been four recent requests for membership, three of which were accepted because I or Lynda, the other administrator, recognized the names. The fourth is a guy named Scott. We're not sure who Scott is. So Scott, if you're reading this, let us know who you are.

Oh, that's a good point. When you request to join the KT group, you should mention your KT name in the message so that they know who you are.

Face book is not for old people.I'm 80 and joined .So confused.I did run into two of my gradeschool classmates.will stick with it a little longer.Hate to be a quitterat my age.

I really feel for people coming into Facebook for the first time. But it has its rewards once you figure it out.

I love the passiveness of it all. I'm not big into emails, been using it so long I'm burned out. In Facebook I can choose to reach out to someone or just sit back and take in all the photos and comments people contribute daily to their Facebook page. I can set filters so I don't have to deal with the people who post stuff I'm not interested in.
