Got a ZZ plant today!

I had a couple of empty pots that needed something to fill it, so went to Bach's Cactus Nursery today and came home with my 1st ZZ plant. It's sitting on my dining room table right now. I've heard fabulous things about how easy they are to grow...I couldn't resist.

I also picked up a small Xmas cactus for 50% off. There's still flower buds on it. My Xmas cactus from last year is just now ready to bloom.

Of course, I did have 1 plant bite the dust this week...the plumeria that I bought a few months ago is now in plant heaven. I don't think that I'm cut out for those...too temperamental for me, I guess! My hat goes off to those of you who are able to keep them alive and get them to bloom!

OMIGOSH! i was gonna contact you and see if you wanted to meet at bach's today. i have to give you your stapelia. however, my car is behaving badly!

Congrats on the new plants, and sorry about the loss. I love ZZ plants--they're so lovely and durable. In fact, they are now my default choice as homewarming/thank you/congratulations/get well plant gifts. I just tell non-gardening recipients to plop it anywhere but full sun and water it deeply once a month. So far they've all had great success.

You probably already know, but you can root them from a single leaflet. It's fun. Just rip one off and stick it in a glass that has just an inch of water in it. Give it bright light and keep it warm and it'll root eventually. Once they do, I pot them up and they make a round tuber. In their first winter the single leaf may shrivel, but water the pot as always and the first spring they send up a true leaf stalk with leaflets. Fun and easy if you're not in a hurry.

Seeing this thread bumped up reminds me to look through my books to see if I can find out what it is. I've never seen this plant, either wild or in a nursery, so it'll take some research. I can usually get a good start in my research by asking what plant it looks most like, then looking up plants in that family - in this case, I can't really tell what that family might be - the phlox family? Ewemayo, thank you. I bought one a few years ago it wasn't the super warty variety just the one you see at the box stores and it turned to mush overnight. I was going to plant it in a mostly Pumice mix to try and prevent over watering issues this time. I have always steered clear of the faucaria after my last one turned to mush but when I touched the leaves of the ones at SG and felt how hard they were I decided to give it another go! I'll find a nice place outside to acclimate it to bright light/ full sun. thanks for the advice! Liz the portulaca is one I always seen online but never see in the store. When I saw it at SG I decided I wanted to take it home. After I got it home and google imaged what more mature specimens look like I was even more pleased I decided on this one. With so many succulents to decide from at SG, after eliminating the ones I already have there is still a nice selection to choose from! I'm staying at a friends in Monterey, ca for the week which is only about a 20 minute drive to SG but I can't wait to get home and find pots for my new plants!

Esther, yes Lakeside Zinger is also in this pot. I have to take a new picture, they have really grown this week. It's just funny that we both have such a pot with STGN. I also planted a few new ones today.Found seven of those pots at the scrap metal dealer and planted Masquerade, Tortifrons and Cameo. They are short pieces of gutter closed at both ends and are standing on small metall feet. They fit perfectly on my new wooden stairs and I will plant more of my minis tomorrow.

grant - thanks for the zz propogation tip. just snipped off a couple of leaves and placed them in water on the heat mat. fun!

I just took a look at mine, which I had sadly neglected, and discovered two new shoots opening up....taller than any of the old ones!
Sooooo....I took off three leaves and have them in a tiny clear pot with some holes in the bottom set part way into my heated aquarium water. They'll get lots of light there...oughta work well!
I never knew you could propogate them that way...thanks again!!!

i got a zz plant last year. it was sold to me as a money tree. i googled it and it turned out not only was it not a money tree, but i was completely overcharged. i guess it's a money tree for the seller. i never found out what kind of plant it really was, until i came acroos a picture today by coincidence.
the leaves are turning yellow, and i have a feeling it is due to overwatering. if i don't water for a while, will it recover? it has 3 shoots growing, so i probably haven't killed it yet. also, i didn't know it was better suited for indoors, so i will move it inside pronto.
any tips for the yellow leaves?

Hi I have mine in side and am leave it there. I water mine 1X a week and it is doing fine. Is it getting light? How often are you watering it? I've had mine at least 2 years now. I have changed the pot once or twice too. New shoots sound good. What kind of water do you have? Do you have any other house plants?
