ginger from root bought in grocery store

Last summer I bought a ginger root and planted it but nothing happened eventually I threw it away. Are they treated in some way not to sprout? I put it in a large pot with potting soil. Any seed company sell seeds? I looked at a Japanese seed company but no ginger, my sons use it a lot in cooking. Thanks

If you're in zone five, it simply might not have been hot enough to keep it happy and alive. Also, sandy potting soil can work better than regular potting soil.

i bought some ginger recently... it was a giant one.. lol now it's sprouting & i'm wondering what i should do with it. i don't have it planted though...

i'm a horrible gardener... i'd like to get better, though... my family is made up of farmers... so... having the thumb of death is kind-of embarrassing... lol

When I started growing cooking ginger I just bought a healthy looking root at the grocery store and then immediatly planted it in a mid sized plastic flower pot in good soil. Then I placed the pot under my large oak tree and forgot about it. That was several years ago and it's still growing well and has even bloomed a few times. I use it in cooking from time to time but have never made tea from it.

I love to cook Asian/Oriental food, and I use fresh ginger on a semi-regular basis. But I am an impulse cook so when I need it I need right then!! But then I may not need it again until I get my next craving (which could be months). I usually keep a knob or 2 in the fridge covered with Chinese rice wine, but I recently decided to try growing some of the ingredients I cook with most on my patio. And ginger is definately one of my staples. I read the article about growing ginger, but now I have a few questions (I am very new to gardening). I am considering self watering containers for most of my plants. Do you think ginger would do okay in those? How big and deep a pot is best? As for harvesting, can you harvest a piece at a time all year round or do you have to wait til the dormant period? As I said, I may only need it every so often and sometimes I'll need a little, sometimes a lot. Can you just dig it up, cut off a small piece and replant it? Seems like storing it in the fridge till the next season kinda defeats the purpose of growing it yourself. But then again, it would probably still be fresher than what you get at the store! And what about galangal? I love Thai food and some friends gave me a kaffir lime tree and I am planning to try to grow lemongrass, so while I am growing ginger, might as well grow some of that too! i tried two different ginger variety last year. the regular ginger was yield pretty big zhigome but i try to winterizing it out door and it die. i also grown the orange ginger roots and they came back strong this year, the leaves are interesting large same size as canas.

I really like Foca on whites and lights and it smells terrific, but I can see for someone that likes stronger detergent scents it wouldn't rate high in that area. Yep Jean but for some reason I didn't think the phosphates would be removed until summer...oh well, great while it lasted. For those of you that like your phosphates just order them and mix with powder detergent at a ratio of 1part STPP and 2parts detergent. ..STPP is the same phosphate used in laundry detergent.

Candy,

Just get a little pot and fill it with sand and a bit of compost, or potting soil and plant the ginger.

sand & compost?... like... what kind of sand?... and potting soil... and what do you do?... just put the ginger on the sand & cover it with potting soil.. er... *looks at you with clueless expression*... :( see?.. toldja i was a bad gardener... that's why i came here... i'm trying to learn a thing or two hundred.. :D lol

Get some "potting mix" from a nursery or big box store, add in a little perlite to keep it aerated, fill up a big pot and place the ginger rhizome flat on top of the soil. Kind of smush it into the soil, but not too much. Leave the top of the ginger exposed. Cover with a few handfuls of mulch (I use crushed dried leaves and "native mulch") and keep it well watered and warm.

Those are the basic directions I found on the net, which I followed, and now have a nice big ginger plant. I fertilize every two weeks with about 1/3 to 1/2 dilluted strength 6-12-6 fertilizer.

Candy- I'm not sure. :) I think I'm supposed to wait till the tops die back in the cool weather and lift the rhizomes out of the pot. I'll post an update in a few months!

Candy, you don't eat the plant, you eat the rhizome. You don't have to wait for the foliage to die back. If environmental cntidions are sufficient enough to support rhizome growth in the first place, then you get more rhizomes to harvest at any time.

Ginger takes many months...around 9 months to a year.
