Growing grocery store ginger

Hi there :) I recently purchaced some ginger root from the grocery store, and want to plant it (it's starting to show several greenish/yellowish buds) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how big I could expect it to become? I will be planting it into a container, and want to make sure the container isn't too small. I also wouldn't turn down any additionl tips people would want to post ;)

Your best bet is to check the responses in the archives for the 100 other times this has been asked. If something is not covered there then let us know and I'm sure one of us will be able to help you. Good luck on growing your ginger!

I did a search for "grocery" and nothing I found said how big I could expect it to get, which is what I most need to know, which is why I posted this topic.

I would think a pot a few inches larger than the size of the rhizome you are planting should be fine you could also cut the rhizome into several sections and so use smaller pots but a full pot of this ginger is nice. And you would want to dig it out at least once a year divide use what you want and replant part to start again.James

Six months ago I took some grocery store ginger with a bud and planted it in a pot. I now have a beautiful 3-foot high plant. I'm wondering about winter. If I keep the plant in a pot, and bring it indoors over the winter, is it likely to last more than a few years? (I am NOT interested in harvesting the root.) That is, when the root develops, does the plant eventually die naturally? Or does it start to put out new shoots? If I keep it outside in the 8b winter, is it likely to survive? What air temperatures can it endure? I understand I at least need to keep the roots from freezing. I understand that if it dies back, it may or may not come back the next year. So I'm reluctant to let it do that. I guess I would like some cultivation guidelines for those who want it as a decorative plant, and not to harvest roots.

Hi socks, I don't know if the article exists on the net or not but it was a good article that basically covered how to grow edible ginger from a grocery store rhizome. I read it before starting my first one :) I think it just gave good common sense pointers about buying a rhizome that was firm and not shriveled and planting it in well draining soil. It will also take your ginger a long time to sprout. I just about gave up on mine and them of course it sprouted. In the winter they go dormant, so if you are gonna sprout one now I would do it indoors on a heatmat. Give it good light as well. Keep it moist but not soggy. Bury it shallowly- just covering the top with soil. I used mg with about 1/3 perlite mixed in. Mine are in a large pot outdoors and are going dormant now. It had green cone shaped bracts on it with little white flowers a few mos ago. The cones and leaves are fragrant when you crush them. I couldn't bear to dig them up and use the rhizomes though lol :P ~SJN

Hi Marie,
Here is an article written by Tim Chapman that will help you. I believe it states that it "grows to 3 feet in med/full sun". It also has other good info. as well.

No, not the size of the plant - I need to know how big the rizome will get. I've read that article (wonderful info BTW!)

i tried two different ginger variety last year. the regular ginger was yield pretty big zhigome but i try to winterizing it out door and it die.
i also grown the orange ginger roots and they came back strong this year, the leaves are interesting large same size as canas.
