I have been growing edible gingers for several years. I planted the ginger roots in well drain soil in partial shade.
They die in our winter then come back really well. I use it in salads and Chinese recipe.Sometimes as ginger tea. Is good for upset stomach. I tried growing it in full sun but they fried in our extreme "HOT" sunshine. I would think that the knobs are planted up.

I just bought some from a farmers market the other day with the intention to plant it. It has a few white knobs on it.
I wasn't thinking and put it in the refrigerator. Hope that didn't hurt it. I'm going to take it out right now and try that paper towel method.

I just stick the gingers in the ground under a lemon tree, it's been growing there for few years now. I make fresh ginger tea a lot when I have cold.

OK, I have a nice partial shade place picked out where I will try this. I love fresh ginger so I'm hopeful. BTW, My warm dark place was on top of the satellite box in the cabinet beneath tv...always warm there :-) I forgot also to say I placed it in a plastic baggie.

I just boil mine for 5-10 mimutes after peeled and cut, add honey. Taste good and feels good going down.

Thanks Jan. Just a few more questions. How much ginger to how much water? How big do the plants grow? I'd like to plant them along my house on the north side and I need to know how far from the house I should plant them. Thanks!

I usually make 2cups tea at a time. 2 thumb size gingers to 2cups of water more or less to your taste. Mine doesn't grow very big under the lemon tree, only about 2' high and skinny. It doesn't spread like some other ornamental gingers.

Great questions Sandy. I did the same thing with some ginger and have the same questions. This is what mine look like now. Can anyone tell me if they're okay to plant them out now or should I wait a bit longer?

Pamela, plant them now.I make tea same way as Jan and my plants are also about two feet and rather skinny.

Do you need to replant every year? Do you harvest the whole plant or just take a little bit of root as needed?

When I started growing cooking ginger I just bought a healthy looking root at the grocery store and then immediatly planted it in a mid sized plastic flower pot in good soil. Then I placed the pot under my large oak tree and forgot about it. That was several years ago and it's still growing well and has even bloomed a few times. I use it in cooking from time to time but have never made tea from it.

I think I am going to have to give this a try!!
