Urgent!!! What's cutting my pecan's main branches???

I planted 10 young pecan trees this spring and they have done well up until recently. I began to notice several branches have been cut....like damage you would see from a beaver...only up high. The branches are 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter and are the tree's main branches!! I can't afford to lose these trees. What is causing this damage and how can I prevent it?? There have been 3 main branches cut in one tree already, and two main branches in another. I know it is not squirrels...these trees are in the middle of a large field and there are no squirrels out there. Also know it's not chip monks...they don't live here. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
