Placed a Palatine order to Replace my Pickering Order

This year I didn't place an order with Palatine, and now that Pickering isn't shipping, I went ahead (that money was already in the rose budget anyway, right?). As much as I love Pickering's selection, Palatine has even larger plants, plus I was able to get a couple of the same ones that were on my Pickering order. I already had an order in with Hortico, and I'll only plant bareroots grafted onto multiflora or ownroot here (Dr. Huey does terrible here, and I'm alittle afraid of Fortuniana...did I spell that right?). I really hope Pickering is back next year, they just have so many more OGRs :(

I had an order of 6 in with Pickering, but here are the 7 I just ordered:

Laguna (i had already ordered from Pickering)
Gipsy Boy (On my Pickering order)
Blue Bajou
Antonia d'Ormois
Magenta
Meteor
Red Intuition (am I really buying a HT???? very unlike me!)

I had Kazanlik on my Pickering order, and Palatine carries it, but it just didn't appeal to me now...odd!

Tammy, this is my first year of ordering HT's too, and am a little nervous. I'm getting Gentle Giant, Heirloom, Oklahoma and Stephens Big Purple.

Last spring I found a rose I really want, Schoen Ingeborg, on Palatine's website--naturally after they were sold out. I fully intended to place an order for it this fall, only to find that Palatine wasn't offering it. Rats!

You are lucky they have some of your Pickering choices Tammy. They don't have any of mine. However, Antonia d'Ormois looks absolutely stunning. I'd like to know how she does for you.

It may be possible to find some on my Pickering order elsewhere like Nevada and Golden Wings, but others will be difficult to find in stock at any other nursery. I may opt instead to go ahead and buy more lovely species from Forest Farm and wait to get my Pickering order from Pickering next year. I do want to make a point of giving them return business next year as I think they will be in special need of orders. Wish there was something I could do to help them now.

I have every rose on your list except Clio and am Zone 7 like you except it doesn't get as warm here in the summer I expect. I probably got most of mine from Pickering too. Expect roses in general to get at least a foot higher than Pickering suggests unless you are a pruner. I would give the Mosses 5X5 to be safe and the Gallicas, though 4X4 with moderate pruning would usually work. Chloris gets quite large. It is a long caned Alba rather different from the usual Alba growth(rather like Great Maidens Blush) but being totally thornless it is easy to place. I keep mine in a narrow slot about 5'wide by pegging it forward. It easily reaches 7'or more high. My FÃ¼rstin von Pless has been problematic-doesn't want to do a thing. It is a Hybrid Rugosa of course and spray drift can be a problem if you are planning on spraying. You need to account for that in spacing. Surpass Tout is one of my favorite Gallicas and as Olga said Jenny Duval will sucker vigorously...but it is a lovely rose. RenÃ© d'Anjou is my best repeating Moss-better than Salat here. Mme de la Roche-Lambert gets Damask Perpetual crud here but has a beautiful spring bloom first. It repeats well but I dont spray with anything that keeps the crud truely at bay(sulfur) It is low and arching for me. Prince NapolÃ©on is a very nice arching typical Bourbon. I suspect that it could get large. Mine has only been in the ground a couple of years from a band. You made some wonderful choices. As for the smaller size, Pickering grafted roses are generally smaller than the usual grafted #1 in the US because they are on multiflora. They are graded the same though, based on the number of canes. A 1 1/2 will be somewhat smaller and have fewer canes but every one I ever got that way did really well-by the end of the first season you could not tell. Nastara - order now. They let you select when you want them shipped. I'm having mine shipped the first week in April. You want to plant bareroots early in the spring - earlier than you would a potted plant. But with the spring rains I usually can't plant until April or sometimes May (it will be too wet). So I ask for the roses at the beginning of April and I keep them in the garage until I can plant them. They hold up fine for a few weeks if you keep them hydrated. I will agree with Diane that Carmel Fairytale is quite disease resistant. It and Elina are taking over my garden while my other roses look like sticks. I will warn you that Carmel Fairytale gets quite large even in a cold zone where it will dieback every winter.

Well Chris, you asked Diane not me, but I can at least attest that Caramel gets big - I'd plan on a minimum of 6' since that's its routine size for me, and if it weren't so floppy that I have to prune it to keep its head above its 5' fence it would probably get bigger. The one caveat is that Kordes used various versions of the word "caramel" in what is possibly more than one rose, so I'm not sure if mine is Caramel Fairy Tale or Caramel Antike or Caramella or whatever. Still, here's mine in May, which is only the beginning of the growing season last year. The asiatic lilies are about 4' high and the fence behind the shot is more or less eye level at 5'. You can see that even in May it's well into its sixth foot of growth, and is shortly about to reach for the floor without substantial supports. I curl a 5' high wire fence around the outside of this one and it more or less keeps it upright. Diane is right, big means well over 6' for you, though I don't really see this one growing like a climber. It's a lovely rose and blooms well all season for me and of course is hardy. Cynthia

@summersrhythm_z6a: thank you for the suggestions again. I completely agree with your logic about ordering harder-to-find roses via mail order as a general rule of thumbs. That's why I added Ascot/Nahema in my original order :). Please let us know what you end up picking from Palatine! In my case, I haven't been able to find any purple/mauve colored roses in nearby Home Depots/Lowes (I don't have a car so I can't really go far out). Also from my experience another mauve/purple rose (Plum perfect, mail order also for $11), it doesn't grow very well as own roots so I am thinking of trying out different rootstocks. @ Lilyfinch z7 mid tn: thank you for the suggestion, I did end up swapping Poseidon for Chartreuse de parme! As soon as I read its description as having fragrance "out of this world", I was sold! I am super excited and will keep everyone posted when my order arrives. @ bethnorcal9: I am so sorry to hear, but hopefully the universe will find a way to bring EMMA HAFTL to you SOON :).

We will have to compare notes after the growing season as I have Laguna, Blue Bajou, and Red Intuition coming from Palatine too. Hope we're both pleased!

We must have similar taste, Karolina. Definitly hope we're both happy with our choices. I had Red Intuition ownroot a couple of years ago, and it didn't make it, so I'm giving it another try this year with crossed fingers :) ...and Laguna just looks beautiful; I've been eyeing it for a couple of years too.

I know I am not from your climate zones but I just wanted to commment on Laguna. I ordered it from Palantine a few years ago. It has proven to be one of the healthiestt and most beautiful roses in my garden. It is not cane hardy here but grows back from small stubs every spring to produce gorgeous roses. Palantine ships wonderful bareroot roses. I am sure you will be very pleased with their product.

I read on the Pickering site last evening that they too are very sad that they can't ship to the USA but they are working on the problem.

Thanks for the input, Valerie :) You're not in our zones, but you're in an even colder zone, so that probably means even better things for us! I've always really liked the pink climbers that are modern, but have old fashion bloom form. I can't wait to see this one next year!

I'm saving my Pickering order for later :) I want too many that other places don't have all together like they do.

I grew Magenta once, and it was wonderful! So pretty -- I love the bloom form. Mine only died because it was a really sad mass-mart clearance version (cankered one-cane wonder, no less). I would definitely get her again.
