What do you think of these roses from Heirloom?

What can you tell me about: Discovery, Fragrant Masterpiece and Wonderstripe? I received an Heirloom gift card and am hoping someone has some experience with these. They look great in the catalog but I'm wondering how they perform in the garden.

Can you please tell me about the garden performance (disease--especially black spot resistance), fragrance and amount of rebloom? If you can also tell me something about mature size, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Jeff...I live in Louisville,KY. and I have grown Wonderstripe for four years. I must say that I will be getting rid of this rose due to poor re-bloom. I have not have more than 10 blooms a season on this rose. The blooms are small and pale. I spray, so no blackspot to speak of and no fragrance. I much prefer Rock and Roll, Stars and Stripes, Cabana, Julio as stripes I grow. I also grow Fragrant Masterpiece and I love this rose. I believe it is so beautiful and the fragrance is so sweet. I do spray so there is no problem with disease. I would recommend this rose! Good luck with your decision. I have ordered many roses from Heirloom and have had very good luck with them. Lesley

Well, I only have WONDERSTRIPE. I've had it for over 10yrs. It doesn't repeat all that great, but it gives me at least 2 huge flushes per season. I don't always stay on top of deadheading, so this rose may just need some hard pruning a couple times a yr to produce more flushes. But, the flushes are massive... usually. Sometime after I planted mine in the ground, it shot out a few suckers that created separate plants around the main one, so it's like having 3-4 plants planted together. The first bloom flush of the season is pretty crazy. Probably like 20-30 clusters of blooms and buds. They last a long time. Could be why it doesn't repeat as well as others. The blooms can range in size. Some are maybe 2" and others can get almost 4". It's a very interesting rose. I really like it because the striping changes throughout the bloomings. Some batches will be more pinky, and others will be more yellow. For me, it's definitely a keeper.

I just got an order in from Heirloom - all are healthy, green and ready to grow. I have a lot of bands in pots - with Vintage Gardens closing, I ordered more than I normally would. I am not any kind of expert like so many on this forum but I am learning and ask questions when I need to. I am figuring out that growing from a band is a long process. Maybe its just me - but I do not find that I can grow from a small band into a big thriving bush in one year. I put mine in gallon pots and graduate into bigger pots when the root system warrants it. In the larger pots, they grow even bigger and thrive. Then, after I feel like they are stout enough, I will plant them in the ground. All this being said........I feel that growing bands into full sized roses takes awhile. If one is impatient and wants instant gratification, perhaps bands are not the way to go. I have an order coming from Roses Unlimited soon. Their roses are much larger than Heirloom's. Shipping is more expensive too. My experience with bands is that one must exercise patience. Personally, I enjoy taking care of the bands and watching them grow and mature. Not everyone would want to do this. Heirloom has a lot of unusual varieties, and I was very pleased with the quality and health of their bands. I think if you give these bands a little time to grow and mature, you will be very pleased. I am careful about fertilizing my baby bands - I think Kim [roseseek] said it best - fertilize weekly, weakly. I am using Superthrive and fish and kelp emusion now - plan to alternate with a couple of others, but will do it in very weak strength. Don't think you will see instantly big shrubs with your Heirloom roses, but just baby them along and you will be surprised how fast they grow. I am pinching buds off all my new roses this year and actually don't mind, as I think about how much stronger this is making them. Rita, your bed looks very pretty and healthy. I am very pleased with my Heirloom bands this year. Last year or the year before - I was not. There was a post a couple of weeks ago on the subject of Heirloom bands and I posted a picture of my little thriving pots. Here they are a couple of weeks later, still doing wonderfully: The only one that is doing less than spectacularly is Welsh Gold; it's a little sluggish so far. Some of these are Clement's intros: Desiree Magnificent Perfume Distant Thunder Sunrise at Heirloom and I have a Will O' The Wisp that I got last year and it is finally getting some size to it. Thanks zack, good idea, I wanted to get to that Rhode Island rose garden last summer but didnÃ¢ÂÂt make it. I have done that buying a rose at the end of the season that looked good. ThatÃ¢ÂÂs how I got my Ã¢ÂÂGolden CelebrationÃ¢ÂÂ. yorkrose, isnÃ¢ÂÂt that interesting about the New Dawn. I can live with that, if it looks good the rest of the season. I wonder what it is spotting with, do you happen to know? mad gallica, I wish I lived closer and IÃ¢ÂÂd happily be dragged! :-) You must have a GOR-geous rose garden! You are right about seeing them in person. I donÃ¢ÂÂt get a chance to do that often at all. When I was growing up, we summered along the Massachusetts coast and I remember a house we visited often that had roses in the garden and I can still remember the pleasure I had from the fragrance and how beautiful they were. ItÃ¢ÂÂs amazing how long an experience can stay with you and roses are one of those things that can do that. Well, if IÃ¢ÂÂm ever planning a trip to New York, donÃ¢ÂÂt be surprised to get an email requesting a tour. :-) I just looked up the Karl Forster on HelpMeFind. What a pretty white rose! I am surprised to see it was bred by Kordes in 1930. I always like to see the description Ã¢ÂÂvery vigorousÃ¢ÂÂ too. Thanks for that suggestion. IÃ¢ÂÂll have to take a photo of the foliage on the New Dawn and post it, tomorrow.

I like the fact that they have reviews of the different varieties on their website with the reviewer's city and state. It helps to know what grew well (and tasted good) where. Also, I had wondered about the prairie dresses! I wondered if it was a religious thing. They reminded me of the dresses the women at the Warren Jeff compound wore. Interesting to know it's just a gimmick! I ordered quite a few seed packets from them this year because I had heard good things about them and liked the varieties they offered. Since this is my first time ordering from them, I don't know how they will do yet. I agree that the catalogue is beautiful, but heavy on anti-GMO articles.

Ditto that for Wonderstripe, which I have also grown for some years. The "wonder" in Wonderstripe stands for I wonder when it will bloom . . .

Many better striped roses out there, including all of those lesmc listed.

The other Heirloom striper -- Stars and Stripes Forever -- suffers the same problem though. Heirloom does have a mini striper I think is pretty nice however -- Striped Delight. Camille Pisarro is one of my favorite striped roses, but it's a pain to find.
