Deep color/Dark color

Will some of you tell me your interpretation of a deep color as opposed to a dark color. For instance Vegetarianwolf said: I'm looking for something with a nice scent and an amber-type color (a deep but not dark yellow).

I've had people tell me they wanted something in a deep red, but not a dark red. I just don't think I am clear on the difference. Actually, I'm not sure I'll understand w/o pics or named plants (and even then the colors of the same rose grown in different climates can look different and spring colors look different from summer colors), but will someone make an attempt to enlighten me? Color is interpretation varies from one person to the next and color descriptions of roses actually change in rose literature over time.
On HMF we have the the following codes for red. I often wonder whether or not some of the colors under RED should be under DARK RED, so I am listing them all. Please note we did a LOT of color research before we narrowed it down to this list:

RED - we use this code for anything that is described as MEDIUM RED, but here are the subcatagories we use:
- cerise
- cherry-red
- coral-red
- rose-red
- scarlet
- geranium-red
DARK RED - we use this code when there is no more detal except for DARK RED, here the subcatagories that we use:
- crimson-red
- crimson
- ruby-red
- vermillion
1 violet-red

Yellows are even more difficult to categorize because some roses with a slight orange tint, or off-yellow, often fall into the ORANGE categories.

An ADVANCED SEARCH on HMF for COLOR, you can pick something like ANY RED and the search results will bring up plenty of examples.

The color attributes in the database come from published descriptions of the rose are not assigned by HMF. We haven't grown all of the roses and there is no way any of use could possible assign a color code to the roses on our own.

Thanks, Lyn. That helps with color names. I'll check out the examples on HMF. But would any of the dark reds also be referred to as deep reds? I just don't get what a deep red or a deep yellow would be. Do you use that term on HMF? Thanks. Lou

They had them at Lowes. I have mine in part shade because of the variegation. Its still in a pot until I can see if it likes it there, lol. It was the first time I had seen such bold colored foliage. Its a beauty. My other white and green variegated one bloomed today. I need to get some pics of it tomorrow. It has dark pink blooms. Got a cool looking yellow on green variegated plant the other day too. It keeps things interesting when nothing has flowers with interesting foliage.

I think it was BM Bittersweet Chocolate that Girlwithaspirin used...She used BM Satin Impervo Alkyd (oil based), but no varnish or anything over the top. You might have to use a primer over the latex before using the oil base...But I'm not at all sure. Consulting the painting forum is a good suggestion. I found it very helpful when choosing what to use on my cabinets. I did a deep burgundy, so used BM Satin Impervo, as Girlwithaspirin did. We also didn't put a topcoat of anything, since the experts on the painting forum strongly advised against that, saying the paint was tougher whatever coating would be on top. I did not think Marvin or Anderson had an ebony or dark bronze interior fiberglass option? I also do not think they have had "continual problems" for ~20 years but it appears as if it was enough of a problem to employ at least one chain painting business in the matter of repairing failed window coatings for approximately 8 years. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't know that I feel comfortable with a coated product where the product has a history of appreciable coating failure, or I would at least feel more comfortable if Marvin owned it and identified to the public exactly what happened and how it was remedied, rather than having us all rely on speculation because I have not seen any official information on the cause of the failures, but it certainly is contradictory to what the product brochures would have us believe!

"Deep" is another one of those subjective terms. Sometimes it refers to the saturation, or intensity, in the color of the bloom. Or it can be used to describe a more golden yellow bloom vs. a pure yellow bloom. Of course, the pure yellow bloom is a deeper yellow than light yellow. In other words there is a continuum.

Yes, we use DEEP YELLOW on HMF and you will find GOLDEN YELLOW listed below. AMBER falls in with the oranges.

There is DEEP PINK, which is different than MEDIUM PINK ... which we just call PINK on HMF.

Color descriptions get very, very tricky when they are blend ... lol.

Go ahead and do the ADVANCED SEARCH on HMF for the various colors. We cannot list all the variables, but there are several and you can pull up those examples you would like to see even if you are not a Premium-member.

I like to think of "deep" as the richness of a color. Take pink for instance. Baby Blanket and Queen Elizabeth are both pink. But QE is a much deeper, richer pink than BB. While a "dark" pink would be more on the order of something like Electron which is also pink but much "darker" in color.
