Austins that meet your criteria are Mayflower(pink) and Susan Williams-Ellis(white). Or two good alternate pinks are Harlow Carr or Huntington Rose. A bit shorter (put it in front of them?) is Sophy's Rose (light red). Or for a darker more dramatic red, consider Shakespeare 2000.

The reason I mention those is that they are very disease-resistant (though Shakespeare 2000 not as much), and blackspot can be a serious problem with a number of the Austins.

Of the Austins you listed, Strawberry Hill is very disease-resistant, and Shakespeare 2000 somewhat resistant, but Eglantyne and Heritage--two of Austin's most beautiful roses--will probably have major blackspot problems.

Those Heirloom catalogs can be so tempting, but you are aware, are you not, that they send very small "baby" plants? Order directly from David Austin for big strong grafted roses or from places like Chamblees or Roses Unlimited for own-root Austins (I think) that are quite well-developed. That would be my advice--unless you don't mind waiting an extra year or two for the little sprouts to get full-sized and blooming.

The only other concern I would have is that 5 hours of sun. Roses usually like a minimum of 6 hours--or all day. Roses often bloom less and get more diseases when they get less sun. One reason I recommended Mayflower and Susan Williams-Ellis is that they can supposedly handle fairly well a little less sun--not that I know that from experience (my Mayflower is in full sun), but that is what Austin claims in his catalog.

Thanks for the input! Im sad to hear heritage and eglantyne have such blackspot problems :( they are indeed gorgeous! But I would do better with a disease resistant plant.

I have ordered from heirloom before, and their plants were small but they're doing really well. I get nervous trying to plant bare root, which is why i liked heirloom. I'll hop over to david austins site and maybe order directly.

I love roses so much, I'm trying them out even though i don't get a full day of sun in my yard. The three roses i have now seem to be doing well enough. If it just doesn't work out though with 5 hours of sunlight, I'll replace them with some more hydrangeas (can you tell by my name, that i LOvE hydrangeas;) But i thought I'd give roses a go for a couple years at least!

I realize this response might be a bit late. But what they hay! I agree with Kate about the Austins. The relatively few I've grown have been blackspot magnets. I'm in a different climate that you, so take that into consideration. I also agree with Kate's endorsement of Chamblee's and Roses Unlimited. Chamblee's, in particular has quite a lot of Buck roses you may want to give some consideration (or keep in mind for future reference.) Quietness is a great example. Some of the Bucks also suffer from Blackspot but others do great.
But you mentioned 3 alternatives. I can say Deep Secret and Heirloom both have some fine qualities, one of which is terrific disease resistance for hybrid teas. Deep Secret tends to lose flower quality in the hottest part of the summer (smaller and weaker bloom form) but makes up for it with stunningly beautiful deep deep red blooms in the more temperate parts of the growing season. Here in New Orleans, Mine is currently turning out some gorgeous blooms, and its after Christmas! We've had a couple of light freezes the past couple weeks, but the roses are still going. Heirloom and Deep Secret are also Fragrant! Deep Secret, to my nose, is on par with other classic red rose greats like Chrysler Imperial and Papa Meilland and Mr. Lincoln. More modest sized blooms, but better diseas resistance than all of those. Worth a try, in my opinion.

As for the 5 hours of sunlight, I've grown roses in similar conditions; for me it results in somewhat fewer blooms, leggier, less bushy plants, and more disease susceptibility. But if you are willing to pamper them as best you can and consider spraying regularly for disease prevention, it can work. It's better than not growing any roses.

I've grown Heritage for close to 20 yrs now. It's nearly thornless, no black spot problems, and is a good bloomer. I only remember 1 year that it didn't perform well, but a lot of mine didn't do well in the summer of 2009. It's only fault (if you care about such things) is that it is not a good cut flower. I'm not sure about the 5hrs but I have another rose that grows under an oak tree and does quite well, so I think it's worth a try.
