Questions on 'Nancy Reagan'

Hi all!

I'm currently enjoying the kind of garden everyone else gets to enjoy during the spring. Being my gardens growing season I'm working on getting my roses as healthy as possible to ensure their survival during the brutal summer months. Most are taking while others are lagging behind. One suck lagger is my Nancy Reagan. This is the third time I attempt to grow this rose. First two times were from Jackson and Perkins on Dr. Huey (I later learned the root stock and my S. Florida location were part of the culprits for the deaths) and now I'm trying to grow this rose on Fortuniana with, again, much difficulty.

Can anyone offer up any suggestions or insight based on your experience growing this rose? I thought about shovel prunning her but I have her planted next to my Ronald Regan rose and he's growing beautifully, producing massively impressive roses. It would be a shame to separate these two if something could have been done to prevent this.

I have Nancy Reagan on fortuniana. It was one of the last batch from Merry Gro (how I will miss them!) It has been very slow to grow and I have more or less ignored it all summer. This fall it put out gorgeous blooms, so it's life is saved - temporarily. I hope it grows into a real rose bush next year. I have Ronald Reagan also, and it is twice the size, but I bought it the year before.

Thanks for your input Heather. I guess I'll give her until spring before I replace her.

I too miss MerryGro too. I hope some other company pops up to replay them as an easy web-oreder source for roses on Fortuniana.

I find it interesting that so few people have spoken on this rose. Maybe people's silence is an idicator of this roses reputation. Either that or folks are too busy shoveling snow (lol).

The roses in the yard that have tags are all J&P roses. So I surfed the J&P wholesale website, and checked for further pictures on www.helpmefind.com. Both of those roses had photos that realy looked like mine. I know color can vary from one location to another. I had done a more generic search on Help Me Find, but frankly, coral pink can be described too many ways, and half the roses don't have photos. Not helpful! Also, the site doesn't really give much info on stems, leaves, etc. But so far, these two are the closest I seem to have come.

I gave the less-than-one portion to one of our guests who is just 21. He lives on his own, and could use a quick meal. I didn't eat any of it...I don't care for chowder (the potatoes you know...) very much. I thought the potatoes would get softer also but hey, it was a chowder! That's not knife and fork food. Yes, I agree, oatmeal is exactly that, rolled oats. I made them with the "quick" one minute oats and they were really good. I think I might like them even better with regular rolled oats, they might retain more of the chewy texture. Annie

How long has she been in your garden? Sometimes it takes a few seasons for a rose to really get going.
