What's Your Favorite Red Rose?
Comments (82)My personal favorite is The Squire. In my humble opinion, Oklahoma is better than Mr. Lincoln. The flowers are darker red, more refined, and smell stronger. There are huge healthy ten foot bushes of it around Santa Cruz. I've grown Papa Meilland budded and own root, presently I have a virus indexed own root plant from Vintage Gardens. In all these years and different permutations, it has grown in small zig-zags, and the flower color has been more magenta red than blackish crimson. I keep hoping it will improve and look like the pictures of Papa Meilland, but it won't perform unless coddled and given high culture. I've given up this year and ordered Charles Mallerin instead to replace Papa Meilland. Depending on your needs, these red roses are worthy of your attention: Black Baccara Oklahoma Royal Canadian Crimson Bouquet Lavaglut Sympathie Linda Campbell Black Jade Climbing Altissimo Doorenbos Selection (Camara is one of my favorites, but its coloring is vermilion with tips blushing black -- not a true red)...See MoreYour favorite non-Kordes/non-Meilland hybrid tea?
Comments (15)without a doubt---LOUISE ESTES. Everything I want in a HT. Good looking bush from top to bottom. Beautiful foliage, long cutting stems, one of the most beautiful blooms I have ever seen and it smells great. I have never seen a picture of this rose that does it any justice. You have to see it in person to understand what I mean. Now it gets tough. #2 would be MOONSTONE---Some good shots on HMF. #3 is BRINESSA---Beautiful smoky pink blooms on a good bush. Foliage like leather. Getting a little tough to find now aday....See MoreYour favorite roses imperfections
Comments (6)Lovely pictures, Sara Ann. That Francis Meilland is mesmerizing! And what a sweet Valentine from Ascot :) There isn't time to list all of mine that have major blackspot issues here, so will just say that is an overall imperfection of my roses. Some other things that irk me: Shouldn't a rose named Paris de Yves St. Laurent be fragrant? It is one of my most beautiful and probably my longest lasting blooms, but the blooms themselves aren't fragrant (the buds are spicy smelling before they open, but then nothing) and closer view of the same shot cause it's just so pretty While on the subject of names, shouldn't a rose named White Licorice be white? I adore this rose and have no problem with its color, but I originally planted it in my white garden thinking it would be white. Moved it the next year since it stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the actual whites. Falling in Love and George Burns are tied for the thorniest roses I've ever grown. You can see the stems right below their buds have tons of little prickles. Those prickles grow into the biggest, scariest thorns you've ever seen on mature canes. Apricot Drift & Coral Drift both bloom abundantly & pretty much nonstop, but they don't self clean...tons of dried up blooms must continuously be deadheaded....See MoreYour opinion is needed - Francis Meilland rose
Comments (3)I potted mine up in a 16" plastic pot when I got him several yrs ago. Did absolutely nothing for the first 2yrs. Third yr he finally bloomed. Then I put him in the ground and WHAM! He took off like a proverbial weed! He peaks out over 6ft and gives me maybe 3 good bloomings per season now. I have always been sorely lacking in my fertilizing routines, so he hasn't had much really ever. I would guess if you do a regular feeding he'd bloom a lot more. But he's definitely a big guy once he gets established and happy! He tends to be a little on the "warm" pink side for me. Depends on the temps tho....See MoreUser
