Ingrid Bergman is a beautiful rose, both in bush and bloom. Personally I wouldn't place her with Hot Cocoa. I just moved Cinco De Mayo away from Chrysler Imperial for a similar clash. My Ingrid is approx 4' high x 3' wide.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to this rose. Just not sure where to put her at the moment. Near Hot Cocoa would be easiest. If Ingrid has a nice bush shape, maybe I'll move Hot Cocoa which is just a weird shaped shrub...and I placed her in one of the prime spots off my front door and porch.

This is how it happens. First you have a plan and then you have roses. Then you have more roses and then your plan goes out the window. I doubt anyone on this forum still has a plan. It doesn't matter what you plant where because sooner or later you will squeeze in at least two more on either side and/or widen the bed, or something will die and give you a space for something completely different that desperately needs to get planted. And of course, everything that is supposed to get large will stay small and everything that is supposed to be small will get big.

The best laid plans of mice and men...it's happened to all of us, lol! I learned early on when gardening with my Mom that plans are only good on paper and never in the garden! Something always happens to change them. I have a huge diagram of my beds on graph paper, supposedly to scale, that is so far off now that I'd have to trash it and start over to make it even remotely resemble what's really out there. Color scheme, HA! Not a chance. During my rampant acquisition years that went quickly out the window. It was more, "now where the heck can I squeeze this one in?", than, "where would it look best or fit in with the colors". But you know what, it doesn't matter. I love my garden in all it's riotous jumble of colors and shapes and sizes!

I am a planner by nature. I am an oldest sibling. Planning is at least half the fun for me. I like research. My job is part scholarly and part project management. I see my garden as an evolving and changing plan. It is not set in stone, but a plan is super important to how I go about achieving goals. To quote Douglas Adams (the greatest author ever!)- "What we need are clearly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty." I developed out of a family of go-with-the-flow-ers and seat-of-their-pants-ers. I recognize the futility of rigidly planning for uncontrollable forces of nature (i.e my family and my garden)...and I'm okay with that...mostly. :)

A number of years ago I posted questions about where to place the roses in my new bed, how far apart, colors, etc. Well, now it's a jungle of roses, and I love it!

Seil - your words could have easily come from me. One thing I am learning to do, aside from pulling out non-roses to place roses, trimming trees for more sun spots for roses, and finding more "space" in between them, is to "expand" the beds, especially since I have a lot of property. What's another 3 feet onto the "sand" driveway in the back of the house towards the barn, anyways... Lets see - 3' x 60' - that's room for a LOT more roses. Phew, solves the problem of what to do with the 5 sitting, and part of the 4 more coming.

Well, in the process of some research, I've answered one of my questions. I've decided to place the Duchesse de Montebello in the up-front, stand-alone position. She's lighter on thorns and there were better pics available on overall shrub form so I'm able to better picture her filling that space.
