How would one know, since the symptoms sometimes don't show up until years later?

Since there are few grafted roses that are virus-free, I guess what you need is a list of the few nurseries that carry virus-free roses and then check with them to see if they carry Elina.

Or try to find an own-root Elina--no virus there, as I understand it.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I got mine from Pickering--obviously not a resource for at least the near-future. But good luck--I love Elina also--have three of her.

I am not seeing her listed on the two nurseries who have virus indexed roses for sure that can sell to the US(Heirloom and Vintage). Pickering has her listed and is supposedly virus free but they cannot ship here for the time being. Own root does not mean virus free because if the cutting was taken from an infected mother plant, then the cutting with be infected too, even if not grafted. So best case scenerio someone can give you a cutting of one they have from Pickering unless someone knows of another source.

I wonder if Elina is on the list of de-virused roses at University of Davis Ca. That would mean at least sometime a nursery could access it.

Palatine Roses has Elina under the name of Peaudouce.

Elina is on the list of VID available varieties. However, only varieties advertised as VID would come from that stock. I do not believe Palatine advertises as being virus free.

My Elina from Pickering showed no symptoms during her ten or twelve years in my garden. She had huge vigor and bloomiferousness. She got RRD last summer (sob).

Now, you can see if Davis might have what you're looking for. Karolina is correct, no matter what has been hyped on a few sites for several decades. "Own root" does NOT mean "virus free", UNLESS the plant from which the cutting was taken WAS virus free. Root or bud something from an infected plant and it is virtually guaranteed to be virused. Take VI buds and put them on infected root stock and they will be virused. Bud VI buds to VI stock and they will be as clean as cuttings taken from VI plants. That's what Pickering has done to produce their RMV free plants budded on multiflora. Kim
