Yoshina Cherry Tree - shallow roots

We have a gorgeous Yoshino cherry tree that we planted about 18 years ago. It is now over 35 feet tall, but has some shallow roots. We recently had our 73 year old porch re-built and the new sidewalk is above grade because our yard slopes toward the street. The contractor wants to build up the ground around the sidewalk, but we are concerned that covering the cherry tree roots would harm the tree. The new soil would add 4 - 6 inches over the roots on one side, then tapering off to meet the rest of the yard.

Is it true that we should not cover the exposed roots or is it a myth? Thanks!
