Would you help me choose (if you have time)?

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in awhile. I am trying to decide between a few roses offered at Pickering, for bouquets. I'd love strong fragrance and blooms that don't open wide or shatter quickly. Also, I one of those who can't stand pointy, quilled blooms. I don't love my "Love" grandiflora, simply for this reason! :0(

I have & LOVE Double Delight/Wm. Shakespeare 2000 & Julia Child...so am considering just getting another one of a few of these, but I also see the following and wonder if you could comment?

L'Aimant (Victorian Spice) Love the ruffled look

Memorial Day (is it a thrip magnet?)

Folklore

Moonstone (I'd rather have Secret, but they don't offer it)

Limelight ('84 Kordes one)

Elina

Mellow Yellow

I am in your zone and my Memorial Day has no disease or insect problem. Scent is wonderful. Kind of singular large bloom on long cane, fairly prolific.
Moonstone is too die for...much paler and more delicate looking than Secret...but Secret is a larger rose for me. How about Princess Grace de Monaco?

If these are the ones that you have to chose from then all I can do is to indicate my own personal choices and I've grown the majority of ones that you list. I'll just star the ones I think are best: Cherry: Green Grape *Black Cherry Italian Ice (read that this one isn't that great in the taste department) "Unusuals": Black Truffle Lemon Boy (read its a stinker) Razzleberry Carbon Red Lightning (not great ratings on this one) Green Zebra Heirloom: *Brandywine Amana Orange (not high in flavor?) Aunt Ruby's German Green (mixed reviews) *Kellogg's Breakfast (mixed reviews), much better than Amana Orange which it supercedes. Pineapple , Virginia Sweets is a better gold/red bicolor Georgia Streak , Virginia Sweets is a better bicolor and Georgia Streak is a very long season variety. Marvel Stripe , another bicolor *Aunt Gertie's Gold (very low production?), outstanding taste, and probably some got low production as can happen with any variety *Virginia Sweets *Golden Queen (USDA strain) (low production?), no, not low production, again, someone somewhere is always going to have low production *White Queen, the whitest of the whites and the most taste, but that isn't saying much; grow for a novelty Tangerine Great White (low production?) *Dr. Wycke's Yellow , it's Dr. Wyche's Yellow and quite good Mortgate Lifter Vintage Wine *Cherokee Purple Thank you all in advance!! Having a hard time choosing pendant & table lighting - help!

I love all of your pendant choices but the only one that really goes with the chandelier is choice 2- 1 is too mission and 3 is too modern IMO. Is your kitchen open to your family room? My kitchen is similar in size to yours and is open to my family room so I did recessed lights over my island so that it would not be too hanging light heavy on that end of the room. If my kitchen was a separate room then I probably would have done pendants over the island. The lights that I do have in my kitchen are made by Wilmette and I really like there quality. Lighting was definitely one of the hardest choices, I went through so many lights and still have some in my basement that could not be returned. Good luck!

Wow, that is a gorgeous space. You must be thrilled. I like the whole list of colors -- those are all really good options and maybe you should sample. I'd add one more to the list. You can snag the chip at Lowe's. It's Olympic's Blue Shamrock. Or, you can go the full spectrum route and get the full spectrum version of Blue Shamrock from Ellen Kennon. She calls it Aqua. Course it depends on the light, but Aqua would likely appear less colorful that the colors you've listed yet still be a color. Jeri, I'm not sure if mine was the kitchen you saw that has both gas and induction. We have a four burner gas stove with a grill in the middle, plus a two hob induction. The rationale was this. I always thought I wanted gas, especially after living with a subpar electric coil range for 18 years. I discovered induction on GW, and, like many have mentioned here, was really intrigued by it, especially the fine control. DH was pretty set on gas and so was I (especially since I was completely sold on a Blue Star), so since I didn't know anyone who had first had experience with induction, and we had the room to do both, we did. I have to say I LOVE having both. The induction makes the best oatmeal, boils water (for tea, pasta, etc) extremely fast, and simmers at a very low heat beautifully, which I love for soups, stews, etc. But I also love having the power of gas, and although we havenÂt used the grill frequently, itÂs a very nice feature to have. Plus, with our set up, itÂs very easy for us both to be cooking at the same time and not get in each otherÂs way. If I had to do it over, I'd do the same thing again. BTW, I often use a tea towel when I'm making pasta in case of spills and so far haven't really had to buy new pans specifically for the induction, as most of our existing pans work. The only one of those I have is Moonstone, which is a beautiful rose to me. It blooms often and the blooms are very large. The plant has excellent disease resistance and vigor.

Memorial day- ok, not real prolific for me
Elina is supposed to have only a mild fragrance according to HMF- also hmf says it is a thrip magnet. This one has tempted me too because I love yellow roses but I went with St patrick instead.

folklore should be great- this is on my short list this year also.

Just so you know I also love DD and JC(don't have WS maybe I should get it :))

Memorial Day bloomed well and looked sensational in the garden, but despite the wonderful fragrance it never made it into the house. All season the blooms had brown edges & other obvious thrip damage. Still, Memorial Day has such a wonderful fragrance, you shouldn't pass it up! I also love Honey Bouquet as a cut flower-- wonderful subtle color and WHAT fragrance. You've got a great list there..esp. Folklore, yes!

I have Elina and it is a wonderful cut rose, albeit no fragrance that I can discern. It has large cream colored blooms-- I don't think that it is yellow!!! I pair it with Veteran's Honor in the vase. Gorgeous combination. Just my two scents worth (pun intended) CJ

'Moonstone' is a real workhorse. Great productivity and long, strong stems for cutting. It does tend to thrip up a little. It last longer than 'Secret', but 'Secret' has the fragrance as well as the beauty.

Susan, your photos were gorgeous! Thanks for the info on Moonstone and Memorial Day.
Linda, Hoovb & Barbara, I appreciate the info on Moonstone...but I guess I'm shying more away from thrip-magnets. I gave away Bride's Dream and Lagerfeld a few years ago because I could rarely get a decent bloom for the vase due to thrips. :0(
Barbara and Sunnishine, I appreciate your thoughts on Folklore. I have 2 Wm. Shakespeare 2000s...just LOVE the blooms and the whole bush!

Ok, guess I have narrowed it down to:

Folkore or another Julia Child, Double Delight or Wm. Shakespeare 2000. Maybe L'Aimant. Maybe I'll get a few.

I grow four of the roses you ask about.
Memorial Day is a beautiful pink with wonderful fragrance. It grows well and stays healthy. The only drawback is the frilly edge to the petals on 98% of the blooms. That isn't good for exhibition, but for a garden rose this is a good one.
Folklore-and all of it's sports-is a growing machine reaching 8' easily by Fall. The bloom is a lovely light orange with yellow reverse. This one too stays very healthy all year.
Moonstone is one of my favorite HT's. The blooms are large and plentiful though scentless. The bush is also vigorous and healthy.
Elina is a nice pale yellow. I think it's Fall blooms are the best. They can be very large with very good form and plenty of substance to the petals that make it last a long time on the bush or cut for vases in the home. It too is scentless, which is it's only drawback.
I would recommend all four of these roses without hesitation.

Let me put in a belated word for Elina. I've had mine only one season, but already I'm very impressed. I would describe the blooms as a cream/white blend with just a hint of pale yellow in the center. Such exquisite coloring! Plus it is a very elegant-looking rose. And I had no disease-problems with it this first year. No thrips either. You really ought to consider this rose--such big beautiful blooms!
