New sprouts on cutt down ELM tree

Any tips or advise on completely killing an already cut down and stump grinded Siberian Elm?

Can i poar something like Kerosene, Salt or something to kill it off?

thanks

P.s. Also I have a few ants climbing up and down my Golden Willow, should i be worried?

If you must, spray the sprouts with Brush-B-Gone, but usually the roots will eventually exhaust themselves if you mow the sprouts regularly.

I would think cut it off,..the only problem what can arise from that is, lots of vigorous new growth and might not harden off properly, if moisture can hold off later in summer you might be OK for hardening off.

I did some more reading, and a few sites say that trees lost to Dutch Elm Disease may send up shoots from the base, but they soon succumb to the disease. Oh well, I cut it down just at the root crown. If it doesn't send up a shoot this summer, I'll order a Princeton elm. Alex

This time of year a tree the size of yours only needs to be watered about once a week. As the temps continue to cool you can water less often. The key point to remember is to water long enough to get the water down to a depth of three feet. If you have one gallon per hour emitters you will probably need to run your system for several hours to accomplish this. As far as staking, your tree may recover. However, you should remove the original nursery stake that is right next to the trunk. Trees bend when removed from this stake because the cells in the tissues next to the stake elongate. This is caused from being shaded (from the stake) which essentially 'pushes' them away from the stake. Use two sturdy stakes placed just outside the rootball instead. Don't lash the trunk so tightly so it can't move. A complete description is included in information from the University of Arizona at the link below. Ken, The tree that was chopped down was heavily infested with EAB. Counted 50 holes. But I have 2 other bigger trees each 30 feet away from this, and each was treated with EAB chemicals of Bayer Advance. So far these 2 big trees are growing and no visible damage, while all the Ash trees in my community are almost all gone. So this is why I am trying to grow the Ash tree again. So there is no other way to artificially create a sprout at the tip of the tree trunk? Both trees have sprout going sideways as you can see in the zoom-in part of the picture. Thanks Sean

I see a few small ants climbing the tree, but no apparant damaged I can see. All I see is a few black branches.

alabamatreehugger, will do. I poured a bucket of salt on the stump, and water it, so it sucks in all the salt and eventually will dry out. But I will but that stuff and pour it on the stump.

Putting salt into your yard is a very bad idea. Depending on the width of the stump, you might just overturn a bucket on the stump to keep light away from the sprouts. I do that and set a bird bath on top, works like a charm.

Black branches may mean moldy honeydew, indicating aphids. Dish soap and water, or a spray of insecticidal soap should get rid of the aphids, and the ants will go with them.

stump killer.. or roundup.. or generic credit ...

do NOT 'wing it' with stuff from your garage ...

use all chemicals according to the directions.. and sparingly ...

frankly ... if you just keep cutting them off .. not allowing any greenery to 'feed' the tree .. it will die ... there.. free.. and chemical free ...
