Broken Branch - Trim other branches?

I have a Marilee Crabtree that I planted this spring. In transport from the nursery, 2 of the bottom branches broke off on one side. This is a vase-shaped tree with branches on each side that mirror each other and I am wondering if I should trim the bottom branches on the other side to match? Right now the tree looks lopsided and I am not sure what is the best route long-term for making the tree heal and look the best. Will the broken branches grow back or are they gone for good?

vase shaped at what height ... thats what baffles me ...

ps: pruning up broken branches is no big deal ... so get us the info and pic.. but dont worry in the interim ...

If the branch was broken all the way off i really don't think it will work...if only partially broken it might although i have had mixed results "splinting" mine. I have never used duct tape ...I probably wouldn't for two reasons #1 it will be hard to remove and create a sticky mess and #2 it will not allow the branch to breath possibly creating a disese problem. I would suggest useing grafting tape or that brown paper tree wrap and tapeing the end to hold it or just use masking or white artist tape both paper type tapes...and as I said spliting it with a couple of tongue depressors or small dowels helps hold it in place. BUT if it's totally broken off I really think you are most likely waisting your time ...but as the saying goes "it can't hurt" david

I would leave it alone. There is a house by me that had a "stick" in their front yard that had actually died. Not like yours. They left it in the ground, and now a year later, it has branches that have actually grown from the ground, watch your plant, it should branch off. I would leave it alone so not to stress it any further. don't give up on it, You are right to plant the others as cuttings. If the break is not clean, I would recut the end at a slant, and let it scab over for a couple of weeks before planting. Good luck!

Need help regarding my Plumeria. I bought a 2 branch rooted cutting last spring and it did wonderful aside from a little stress (was dropping older leaves) it showed from the above average temperatures and frequent heavy rains. Anyway, spring seemed to take forever to get her this year so I ended up moving it from the dark corner in the basement and put it under a strong growlight to bring it out of dormancy. It got a late start but within a month I saw leaves begin to emerge from both branches. Once it was warm enough to move outside I accidentally damaged one of the growing tips during the move. It soon showed signs of rot so I cut the tip off about 3 inches below rhe rot. The other branch is doing just fine and Ive been waiting all summer to see what would happen with the branch I cut. Today I noticed a bud starting to emerge from rhe cut stem about 4 inches below the cut. My question is, do I do anything with the extra 4 inches. I'm happy about the new grown but the one branch will always be shorter and I'm not excited about that extra inches of stub above the emerging branch. Can I at some point trim that back further or is it best to just live with the stub?

In this particular case I'd say no, not worth trying to salvage it as is. Both growing tips have been broken. However both can be cut off and rooted in damp potting mix. See the discussions here on 'rooting cuttings'. Dave

Here is a pic of the tree. The branches on the left side are broken off so the tree is lopsided. I've been advised just to leave it as is but of course it looks a bit odd.

god these sideways pics are driving me nuts.. and i blame GW ..

anyway..

yes.. i would take the two or 3 bottom ones on the right off.. to match the other side. .. [take 2.. decide on 3rd next year.. no hurry with trees]

and if you left nubs there.. learn to prune properly ... do you know what a branch collar is???

I agree about taking the bottom branches to match, BUT as I understand, the tree has recently been transplanted, so I believe I would leave the branches for a year or so to let the newly planted tree become completely established in it new home.

It has already suffered the shock of transplant and the loss of some of its branches, no need to further stress it by removing more branches.

About the nubs, I have not pruned the tree, this was the condition of it since we purchased and planted.

Yes, it's a new plant (in July) so I think I will wait a year and then prune next year.

Got to agree with knuttle AND ken - they need to come off but let them help establish the tree and build carbohydrates for future growth. If it were my tree I would let it grow for a season or two and then prune it to be aesthetically even. There are the tree's physiological needs and OUR aesthetic needs. Happy medium!

....plus, you may find that branchlets, small branches growing off of the first-tier on the "odd" side will fill in where you discern a lack of tree at present. In any case, no hurry in doing anything.
