All branches broken off stem

Hi,

I have a plumeria that I grew from a cutting last year. It had just started to flower when I went on vaction a week ago. And a day after I left the person watching our house found all the braches broken of the stem about one foot from the ground. I plan on growing the three broken branches, but what I would like to know is if the stem in the ground will regrow? It is broken off jaggedly but scabed over by now also there are no leaves it is just the stem. Should I recut it so that it is a smooth angle or just leave it alone?

I would leave it alone. There is a house by me that had a "stick" in their front yard that had actually died. Not like yours. They left it in the ground, and now a year later, it has branches that have actually grown from the ground, watch your plant, it should branch off. I would leave it alone so not to stress it any further. don't give up on it,

You are right to plant the others as cuttings. If the break is not clean, I would recut the end at a slant, and let it scab over for a couple of weeks before planting. Good luck!

Thanks.

I did recut the branchs as soon as I got home last night so that they were about 18'' with a clean angled cut. Plus I trimmed off the leaves but left the flower buds on.

I agree about taking the bottom branches to match, BUT as I understand, the tree has recently been transplanted, so I believe I would leave the branches for a year or so to let the newly planted tree become completely established in it new home. It has already suffered the shock of transplant and the loss of some of its branches, no need to further stress it by removing more branches.

Ed, thanks for the vote of confidence. My knowledge of raising tomatoes is limited because in the past I used to have 24+ plants so losing one was not an issue. However, at my new house I am down to 12 plants due to space constraints so every plant counts. The fact that this plant is very young (I started it indoors from seed in mid-April) had me a little concerned. How does losing a branch affect the health of a plant? How does a plant recover? Is there anything that I should do to prevent the possiblity of disease? Should anything be applied to the wounded stem?

Yes, if if it is a growing tip not a leaf branch and if kept watered and if the cutting isn't too large it will survive. It it is large trim it to 4-6" in height and remove all the leaf branches except the top tuft. There are many discussions here about this - one further down the page about a broken San Marzano. Good luck. Usually if you are going to trim the leaves off, you should also cut the inflo too, as they take up energy. I would suppose you are talking about the cuttings? I have successfully rooted many cuttings by leaving on the leaves. Until I found this site last year, I didn't know any better. Good luck! Jennifer
