I've lost tops of tomato plants in the past, and what happens with indeterminates is that one of your larger laterals will take over as the primary branch. Determinates just get bushier. It may slow them down, but with it being this early and them having a head start for your area, I suspect they will catch up. They have time to make it up. Bets

In this particular case I'd say no, not worth trying to salvage it as is. Both growing tips have been broken. However both can be cut off and rooted in damp potting mix. See the discussions here on 'rooting cuttings'. Dave

Ed, thanks for the vote of confidence. My knowledge of raising tomatoes is limited because in the past I used to have 24+ plants so losing one was not an issue. However, at my new house I am down to 12 plants due to space constraints so every plant counts. The fact that this plant is very young (I started it indoors from seed in mid-April) had me a little concerned. How does losing a branch affect the health of a plant? How does a plant recover? Is there anything that I should do to prevent the possiblity of disease? Should anything be applied to the wounded stem?

Yes, if if it is a growing tip not a leaf branch and if kept watered and if the cutting isn't too large it will survive. It it is large trim it to 4-6" in height and remove all the leaf branches except the top tuft. There are many discussions here about this - one further down the page about a broken San Marzano.
