I've trapped/neutered/returned feral cats and afterwards they think that I'm their friend, rather than an evil sadistic ogre. I guess its the room service they receive post-surgery.

... Oh great, NOW when I slap my hands, they will COME to me rather than run...

You did the right thing with your good heart. I know it's not right when they eat what we've grown and are trying to see bloom and such, but whenever this happens to me I go back to one of my best gardening memories...

We moved here in late 2001. In 2002, my 7 year old DD and I planted a LOT of sunflowers, mostly multi branching/flowering such as Moulin Rouge. They grew very well. We were getting excited in August when the buds were about to bloom. One morning we awoke to see only the stems remaining and were told by a neighbour that the deers had ravaged them the previous night. I began to get mad, but my DD said, "It's OK maman, they have to eat too."

Isn't there a nursery rhyme about planting four seeds for every plant you want??
I've heard a rabbit scream, eerie it was..he was stuck in our chain link fence and the weenie dogs were hot on his tail. THEY never made a sound. It was about two in the morning so I went to see what was up and they were trying to chew through the fence!! It was weird to see them so quiet and intent...never saw hide nor hair of the rabbit again.

tiff - your daughter is so right (and sweet, too) - They don't know they are eating your precious plants that you spent all winter and spring taking care of so that they would grow nice and you could put them in your garden for pennies... okay - so I am rambling and still a bit annoyed, but hey, we have deer, rabbits, possums, etc. etc. it's the price you pay for have a bit of land with woods.

Now, brandymulvaine what kind of fence did they try and chew through? - I hope my bunnies don't come back, but I decided to put out a head of lettuce for them and other things (even if I have to buy them food), just so they won't eat my plants.

At Plimoth Plantation, the restoration/re-enactment of the original Pilgrim settlement in Massachusetts, the Native American guides point out the gardens they plant specifically for squirrels, deer, and rabbits in addition to the gardens they plant for food crops. The concept is that planting a separate garden for wildlife ensures crops in the other gardens for people. No one actually said how well it works.

I was thinking about planting more lettuce, etc. in that raised, holding bed and starting another holding bed somewhere else, but then I figured that would encourage the rabbits to tell their friends about the new "rabbit garden".... so I changed my mind....

It was a chain link fence that goes around the back yard(for the dogs) I'm not sure why that silly rabbit was in there,clover maybe?? Usually we shut the dogs up at night,silly rabbit..
I think if you did do a "bunny garden" somewhere that's easy access for them they may be less inclined to venture out to the flower beds. I wouldn't over do it though, more food usually equals more rabbits. Or maybe you'd like to try the weenie dogs!!LOL!!

I've never heard a rabbit scream, either. It's usually the opposite- me screaming at the rabbits.

You are a good person Carrie! Something muched my BES too, kind of looked like a rabbit would do. These are Goldsturm, which I've not had before. But the rabbits have never eaten my hirtas, and I have quite a few of them. I wondered if rabbits liked ruds, and you confirmed that for me. BTW, those chewed plants are bouncing back and growing out from the roots. Hope yours do, too, Carrie.

limequilla - I thought "road trip" right away - but there were two (and maybe babies at a nest) and so that may have meant splitting up a family - just couldn't do it. I know I may regret it someday when there are hundreds of rabbits....

Believe me, if I thought he/she was a loner he would have had a nice car trip far away from here!

If you have never heard a rabbit scream before - you are surely missing one of the weirdest cries from an animal. After that scream, my heart was broken and that's why I was trying to soothe it by gently talking to it. Poor little guy!

I read a tip about buying the cheap 10 for $1 lettuce packets and planting a long row at the edge of the woods. The tip said the bunnies would stop there and feed and not venture on into your garden. You might give it a try. In addition, if you have somthing light weight that would flutter in the wind you could tie pieces to your fencing. I have a reel of audio tape I picked up at a yard sale that I use. You can also cut up Mylar balloons (after the party) to tie to a fence, the thin strips flutter nicely in the slightest breeze.
You did a nice thing to help the bunny get free of the fence. The only time I heard one scream was when a red tailed hawk was swooping down to get a tiny bunny and the Momma bunny was running behind the baby bunny screaming like crazy. So sad to see. And it was right in the city too.

Oh Tina, that's horrible - I noticed this morning they went for the hostas so I am thinking about putting some baby carrots out in front of the hostas and see if they eat those instead.

The hostas are on the side of our detached/loft garage, and no one can see them, so if they are eaten down it's no big deal - but... of course, I would rather they touch nothing.

I don't think I could dig into that hard clay in the woods to plant lettuce but will check tomorrow. Yes, lettuce seeds are cheap - thanks.
