Deer Destroyed New Lapin Cherry. Help!

As you can see from the photo, I planted a new Lapin Cherry this spring and the deer just got it last night. It was really taking off, partly due to the deer earlier in the year. It was growing ok and leafing out, but then in late June a deer came through and bit the end off the top branch. Within three weeks that branch had split off into three branches and the entire tree just took off.

But now we are approaching winter and last night they munched off all the leaves. I don't know whether I should feed and water it and try to get it to leaf out again before winter, or just leave it alone.

I know that most pruning books say to prune cherry trees in the summer, but we are officially a month past summer now and I'm afraid it is too late to try anything this year.

Advice?

This late in the season, I wouldn't be trying to push new growth. But, you probably need to be thinking about 'protection' - eating the leaves off, this late in the year is not a big deal - but if a buck decides to polish his antlers on your young tree, he can - overnight - pretty well demolish it.

only the leaves that were going to fall off in a few weeks.. who cares ...

your problem is figuring out how to stop them from coming back and eating the rest.. for the rest of the winter ...

its obvious you feed your lawn.. its roots are under the lawn.. NEVER feed it double ...

water late into the season.. and get some mulch on it..

and figure out how to stop them from eating wood next time

To get rid of an animal, you have to think like the animal. You also have to consider that the rain and weather will affect your repellents. Deer and rabbits are both repelled by scent and taste. The smart ones smell it and move along, the not so smart or hungry ones have to taste it to be sure. For deer and rabbits I have found that border repellents (hot pepper flakes, blood meal, predator urine etc.) are minimally effective. But combined with a surface repellent like Liquid Fence they are effective. However, you must reapply every time it rains no matter what the label says. Oh..and it stinks. A lot! Until it is dry. You can make your own mixture of rotten eggs, garlic and hot pepper oil. It's basically the same as Liquid Fence and its ilk. I know...not what you wanted to hear. Fencing is effective if you remember that a white tailed deer is an olympic jumper. 6 feet or higher to keep them out. Rabbits will tunnel under the fence so you have to run a foot across the ground before going upward. I have heard (but never used) that the motion sensor water sprayers work well for deer. The one I have seen around here is the "Scarecrow". Squirrels bury stuff everywhere! I am not one for harming animals. I had the same problem and resorted to feeding them. I did. I nailed an old plastic pot to a tree. I fill it with feed corn. Then I placed an old hanging basket with soil on a limb near by. They bury the corn right in the basket. It has reduced the damage but not eliminated it. I have not found a repellent that works for them. They are either too smart or too stupid...not sure which. Cats. Ugh. The Scarecrow water sprayer may work for them. I don't know. I assume these are stray cats? If not, talk to the owners and see in mentioning animal control gets them to keep their cats at home. If they are strays, I would make the call. You can see if there is a group in your area that gathers ferral cats for rescue. I know of a few people who say moth balls work to repel them. I have never tried it. Everyone's animals are different. I have found that breaking their feeding pattern and remaining diligent is the only way to be effective. I also fence my veggie garden. Hi All: I live in zone 6, where Lapins seems to do quite well so far. Mine are entering their 2nd year at my home. I bought 12 of them and all but 1 are thriving. I did not buy them as eating cherries, but for attracting birds so small yields are not much of a concern for me. In fact many of them are in my front yard, so the fewer the cherries the better for my lawn. Anyway, I have a question for anyone out there. The story on the one tree that did not make it is that the main trunk of the tree appears to be either dead or dormant (I think because I pruned it too hard at perhaps the wrong time of year last year). Now there are many shoots coming out of the bottom of the tree. My question is: is this tree salavageable? Or should I dig it up and plant a new one? Thanks! Chris

Wolf, How productive are your cherry trees? By year 5, all of them should be very productive. If not, the first thing comes to mind is a pollination issue. Sweet cherry does not cross pollinate with sour cherry. Most sour cherry are self fertile so your Mont. and Balaton should produce fine and well. Bing is very difficult to grow outside the Pacific Northwest and certain microclimates in Michigan. You are in IL. It is not a good place to grow Bing. I do not think Black Tartarian cross-pollinates Bing, either. Rainer and Van cross pollinate Bing but Rainer is not for your climate. Van may be. Re. diseases. Your trees probably have sustained injury from severe cold weather these past two winters. When trunks cracked, trees weakened, pathogens of canker which already exist, have moved it and done further damage. If your trees are healthy to begin with, they will try to heal but if canker gets worse, not sure how long the trees will last. Cherry leave spot and cherry trees seem to go hand-in-hand. You needs to spray fungicide. Beside canker, cherry leave spot, cracking and brown rot are other serious cherry issues. Oh, don't forget birds. Sour cherry usually has fewer issues than sweet cherry. I usually like to try to graft other varieties on the existing trees I don't like. However, the damages on your trees are quite low the trunks. I do not know if it's worth saving them. Cutting mature trees down that low to graft on is possible but I have not done so myself. Growing cherry in zone 5a is iffy to begin with. Sweet cherry is even harder to grow. I'd say the best fruit trees for you and your area are apples and pears. You can buy Bing and Rainer, from the market like most of us!!

Not many....just a few branches. Some parts of the city can grow them allot better...Bernie told me about a tree in Edmonton... One of my clandestine horticultural contacts lives just south of downtown Edmonton and sent a photo of his 12 year old Lapins taken today, July 8. He lives just up the hill from the Muttart conservatory, so the cold air goes downhill away from him. Also he is in about the best possible microclimate as all the big downtown buildings act as giant radiators and warm the coldest winter temperatures a few degrees. His tree is on standard rootstock, and is about 15-20 ft. tall. He has not had temperatures below -32C, the limit for Lapins, for several years. This tree did suffer some winter damage for a couple of winters years ago, but has recovered. This is the second year of a big crop. So yes, it is possible to grow sweet cherries in Edmonton under ideal conditions and location, at least until a winter colder than -32C hits the location. Lapins is also self fertile, so that helps with pollination. Bernie

Leave it... You need to protect it somehow or start eating more venison :)

Lapins is a very good self pollinating sweet cherry (i have one).

In zone 4-5, it probably would have lost its leaves within a month from now anyway. Like everyone else has said, don't even think about encouraging it to leaf before then. Just find a way to keep the deer away from it.

Tree needs to be mulched and fenced. Yard may need to be fenced if you are not going to be constantly subject to the whims of deer. Lowering temperatures and shortening day length liable to be telling tree to shut down, you might not be able to get it to flush this late anyway.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll leave it alone. I'm probably going to wrap it in burlap and mulch to protect it this winter cause it always hits -20F for a couple weeks and i don't want to lose it.

I don't use synthetics on the lawn. Alfalfa, Milorganite, and occassional compost so there is no danger in double feeding the trees.

Thanks also for the kind words on the rock wall. I actually have retaining in the front that is about 15 vertical feet and 120 feet long that is more interesting than the small one in the back, i'll snap a pic or two for those interested.

==>>> perhaps you miss my point ... if the roots are under the grass.. and they are .. and you add all that to the grass.. then you will never need to 'additionally' feed the tree ...

I see ken. Thanks for the input. I usually do two applications of alfalfa annually and two heavy applications of milorganite. That is to everything, not just the lawn.

Thanks for the compliments on the rocks. I did do all the work myself.

LOL, there is a story behind the stakes and string.

The tree hadn't gotten a good deep water for a while because we have been in drought conditions this year and I am in the mountain desert. It gets hit by the sprinklers a couple times a week, but I figured it would be good to go around and give all the trees a nice deep soak.

I accidentally forgot about it and went about doing other things. Suddenly I heard a crash outside and saw my patio furniture flying across the yard as a severe storm cell blew in out of nowhere; 40mph winds with 60-70mph gusts and we are up on a hillside with no protection.

I looked out at that little cherry and it had accidentally been soaking for so long that there was about 2" of standing water around it and the soil was pure mush. The wind was just about to lay it over as I had only planted it a few months earlier. So I jumped over there and pounded in a couple stakes and tied it up to give it a little extra support. That was about a month ago and I haven't thought about taking them out since. :D

Yeah, the stonework is nice!

I've used fiberglass window screening to keep rabbits from gnawing on my young tree trunks, and it seems to work good. I'd wonder if burlap, being softer, might not stop the Bambis. It is great for shading greenery, though.
