sweet cherry grafting onto flowering cherry?
Comments (22)The climate in New Zealand…would it be like Zone 8-10 or do you get ’cold’ weather in your Winters? I live in southern California and as you know, we dont get much ’rain’ let alone temperatures below 50* almost all year long. i visited Campbell Town Scotland once and that temperture remained cool and damp most of the year…(I was informed)…and though i always wanted to ’see’ Australia and New Zealand, i never got an invite so i don’t know the climate. a great encouragement to guys like us is to watch videos on Youtube about growing Food Forests!!!!…and those guys amazing success about all types of ideas!!!!!...See MoreCan I plant a Sweet-Cherry 'Lapins' in the shade?
Comments (3)I have some cherries in morning shade and have had a few disease problems there but it has been better than I expected it would be. All day shade could be much worse on the disease front however. You certainly will get a much reduced crop, and it could also take many more years to start showing up. I have a big old wild cherry that is mostly in the shade and it produces very few fruits. Scott...See MoreCalling all Lapins cherry growers
Comments (23)Hi All: I live in zone 6, where Lapins seems to do quite well so far. Mine are entering their 2nd year at my home. I bought 12 of them and all but 1 are thriving. I did not buy them as eating cherries, but for attracting birds so small yields are not much of a concern for me. In fact many of them are in my front yard, so the fewer the cherries the better for my lawn. Anyway, I have a question for anyone out there. The story on the one tree that did not make it is that the main trunk of the tree appears to be either dead or dormant (I think because I pruned it too hard at perhaps the wrong time of year last year). Now there are many shoots coming out of the bottom of the tree. My question is: is this tree salavageable? Or should I dig it up and plant a new one? Thanks! Chris...See MoreLapins Cherry Tree (Zone)
Comments (6)Robtos, I am sure Lapins won't make it in Fairbanks AK unless protected some how. It might be of interest to you that we had broken records of low temperatures around my 'Evans' pie cherry last winter and that the tree is looking as good this year as any year of the last 4. Lynn Long of OSU in 'The Dalles' Oregon has a web document and claims the sweet cherries like your 'Lapins' can vary around -30F hardiness under certain conditions; -Pasted from web----------------------------------- Highlights  Base line hardiness of cherry buds is about -6°F.  Cherry buds have the ability to gain about 4° of hardiness per day.  Once temperatures rise about freezing, the added hardiness below -6°F can be lost in a few hours.  As spring approaches, buds lose their ability to gain hardiness.  Tree health is important in imparting cold tolerance to buds. -End of Paste------------------------------------- For me under almost -50F conditions for as long as we had I am sure everything (especially tree health) were important factors in tree survival. Mine had plenty of sun, good silt soil, plenty of added micronutrients from seaweed extract applied to leaves, and I followed Lynn Longs' advise of carefully watering the tree to the tee so that the tree can slow down and push the previous buds into maturity faster....See MoreKonrad..just outside of Edmonton Alberta
