Most of us consider Olga an expert. I really see no problem with Geo asking her about the subject she opened. I, too am interested in moving to a no spray garden, and would like to know what she considers no spray.

Geo, are you also in MD? If yes, I don't think there are that many choices if you are picky like me and don't want tolerate 30-50% leaf loss. These roses usually have very little or no disease here in my experience:

Illusion (some cercospora in the fall)

If you are OK with 30-50% leaf loss but still good vigor repeat and overall reasonable apearance after leaf loss:

The best out of HTs and Fls that I tried are/were Liebeszauber, Lady Luck, Mc Cartney Rose, Rosemary Rose, Westerland, Eden, Colette, Elina (if you are lucky to find virus free one). But they all will have more then 50% loss. They just recover fast, still bloom and stay vigorous.

Thank you. Hopefully you have more choices then we are here. Our climates are so different.
My understanding is that Teas, Chinas and Noisettes that are not so resistant here can be much better in hotter places.

I am moving mostly to once bloomers, ramblers and species. but I keep experimenting with roses that people say to be resistant for them.
Next year I am trying White Cup (Robert's enabling), Fields of the Wood (Patricia), Clementina Carbonieri (sp?)and some others.

Olga, in the first of your beautiful pictures there is a purple rose in the left background. May I ask what the name is? Could it be Reine de Violettes? It's a lovely rose. I'm hoping it's not a once-bloomer or a rose that would hate Southern California.

You and other generous souls have helped me so much with my new garden here where temps & the humidity are so high. PS:Go figure-- in both my z8 gardens, North Texas(Dallas) and here in coastal SE VA Belinda's Dream, Marie Pavie and Perle d'Or have all been very clean. YMMV indeed, eh?

Although I am in Delaware, I think the climate may be considered a lot like Maryland-hybrid musks look interesting, especially as they appear to be (somewhat, anyway) viable in shade and also disease resistant; thanks for the "Buff Beauty" recommendation-I am considering between that & "Nur Mahal", and will be trying "Erfurt" as I have heard good things there.

The McCartney Rose definitely sounds interesting (will also be trying that), as well as "Westerland", "Ghislaine" and "Aloha" (and Darlow's Enigma). Also, many others that you (and others here) have considered worth trying (although some are orange).

Too bad that I live so far away from Olga. To tell the truth, not only because of these Âfreebees I am sorry for that; I loved to be around when she prunes and love to be around when she has the first flush. On the other hand, I am not envy at all of her higher bs pressure and even less of her Japanese beetle infestation. Olga and Harry's Jb photos induced serious nightmares.

I sure didn't see a problem with geo asking a question either. Isn't that how a normal conversation flows?

Olga, thanks for your list of what you consider no-spray. I've been experimenting with this also, and I remove the worst ones. What I have found so interesting on the forum is how a rose can be no-spray in one area and not another. Belinda's Dream never needs spraying in Florida, but I've heard of people having problems with her elsewhere.

I'm sure you'll find good homes for them all.

If you are still reading this thread, Reine de Violettes does extremely well for me in coastal Santa Barbara. Reblooms very well throughout the season.

I think part of going no spray is tolerating less than perfect roses, knowing they will rebound if otherwise healthy. Also, I make an anecdotal observation that they get healthier as time goes by once the chemicals stop(at least some varieties). One example in my garden is Eugene de Beauharnais. It is at least 10 years old, and had a great summer and now fall for a couple of years in a row.

I never really used insecticides or any harsh fungicides, mostly trying to stay as close to organic as possible. For example, I used sulfur for years. I can tolerate quite a lot of insect damage, but not bald plants. BS is something I am not willing to live with. More then 20-25% leaf loss makes the plant unacceptable to me. I better limit myself to once bloomers then have a garden full of sticks. We are all different :)

I never cease to be amazed at what difference a few miles can make in what roses one can grow 'no spray'. Just for instance, I can grow Belinda's Dream, Marie Pavie and Pat Austin here no-spray. I have very little if any leaf loss on these roses.

Olga, I wish so much that you could keep all of your roses. You garden is a delight to behold. (I would list all the roses I grow no-spray, but over the years I have seen that we are in two different BS climates)

Good luck on the no-spray garden. I find I have more time to enjoy my roses without the burden of spraying. I am hoping you will find the same.

One thing I am certain of....your garden will remain a paradise.

Susan, thank you for the info about Reine de Violettes. Randy made me want to grow this rose but I do want roses with good rebloom and I didn't have that impression about this rose. My other worry is that I live further south, 25 miles inland and at 2000 feet elevation, i.e., it's much hotter and drier than where you live. I wonder how that would affect the bloom production and general well-being of this rose.
