What Rose would look good with Home Run?

I ordered 6 Home Run and 6 Carefree Sunshine last Spring, and planted them near the road...The Home Run stayed compact and bloomed ok, but the Carefree Sunshine grew way too tall, and looked what I call, spindly...with only a few blooms...(not good planning on my part) so I need to dig them up come Spring and replace them with what?...any ideas what will bloom as well as Home Run...? I was disappointed that I didn't have any luck with Julia Child...guess she didn't like our rocky soil. The only Rose that grows real well here are Knockouts.

How about either Sea Foam or Moondance? I have Moondance on one side and Sea Foam on the other of Home Run. They were just planted this year, so I haven't got the whole picture on how it will look, but all of them were in constant bloom this summer.

However, I am using Sea Foam as a ground cover-trailing rose on a slope, so it may not behave as you want for your set up (at the very least, it will probably spread out quite a bit).

I have a red and white bed in front. I am really liking my Crystal Fairy (I have 3 own-root from J&P). It's only fault is that it does not self clean, but shearing off the spent blooms once in a while is not a big chore. I don't have Home Run, but I am planning to add it to the bed. I really like Flower Carpet Red and Flower Carpet Scarlet (I have Scarlet). So, I am thinking that Flower Carpet White would be good as it is reportedly self-cleaning. Starry Night (single white) is also supposed to drop petals cleanly, but it might get too big for your purposes. I would also appreciate input from those who have grown FC White and Starry Night.

Why don't you put in a small boxwood hedge around the outer perimeter and keep it pruned fairly low. It would provide green in the winter and emphasize the square shape (design element). Then include a mix of Home Runs and azaleas inside the boxwood perimeter. Of course, I'm assuming your azaleas stay green (mine don't here in Zone 6) and that they can take the same amount of sunshine a rose needs. Otherwise you would have to come up with an alternate to azaleas. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about your region to suggest a 3-4 ft shrub that stays green in the winter time, but I'm sure their must be some. How about golden euonymous (can't spell that!)--someone posted a pic recently combining it with roses. I assume it would have to be pruned fairly regularly into a rounded shape. At any rate, with the boxwood perimeter, I would guess that you could plant 4 Home Runs (or 2 Home Runs and 2 azaleas or euonymous)inside the perimeter. The boxwood perimeter would give a slightly more formal look to the flowerbed--which may or may not be what you want. Hope that helps. Kate

I never cease to be amazed at what difference a few miles can make in what roses one can grow 'no spray'. Just for instance, I can grow Belinda's Dream, Marie Pavie and Pat Austin here no-spray. I have very little if any leaf loss on these roses. Olga, I wish so much that you could keep all of your roses. You garden is a delight to behold. (I would list all the roses I grow no-spray, but over the years I have seen that we are in two different BS climates) Good luck on the no-spray garden. I find I have more time to enjoy my roses without the burden of spraying. I am hoping you will find the same. One thing I am certain of....your garden will remain a paradise. Ronda

I still like it, but it's about time I got something different. You know how I hang on to things. Would you feel offended? Sis:just because *I* gave it to you doesn't mean you have to keep it forever and be buried with it like king Tut. I've been wondering if you were ever going to take it down and get something new. Yes, I like it, and think it would be a great addition in the space, as well as a wonderful memory of you. Let's do it. Just my 2 cents, but when someone gives you something it isn't as though there's a license 'to be kept forever' stamped across it. I've gone thru the same thing with things, and while I feel a sadness, life goes on. An item doesn't necessarily have to 'wear out' to let go of it.
