This is not the best time of year to be pruning roses in your zone. Heavy pruning should be done in the early spring (March) in cold zones. Michael and Karl are probably correct about the root stocks. But the first thing you need to do is cut out, to the base, all the dead wood and weed so you can see what you actually have. And cutting out dead wood can be done anytime of year. If you do that much now you'll at least be set up for a hard prune in the spring. Your idea of tying up the canes to wires on the wall is a good one. You can do that now too and it will help next spring. Then in the spring you can do what Michael suggests and cut out about 1/3 of the oldest, woodiest canes. It's OK to cut out more if it's still too large to control but I wouldn't cut them all off. Leave at least 1/3 of the newest canes alone. You can cut them shorter if necessary but not off completely. Once you have the climber tied up you should be able to see the other roses that are underneath. Again, cut out all the dead wood now. Look over the remaining canes carefully. Any canes that look damaged or diseased should be cut out. Leave the rest alone for now. In the spring you can prune them better for shape and size when you see what comes back. When they bloom next spring take pictures of the buds, partially open blooms and fully open blooms along with pictures of the full plants, new growth tips and fully grown leaves. These are the kinds of pictures needed to identify your roses. If they are root stocks you'll be able to decide then if you want to keep them or dig them up and replace them with better varieties.

When you say you can't "babysit them" are you concerned about watering for the first year, or pruning down the road? I've tried this "plant and neglect" strategy before. The only tree I've ever consistently gotten established with absolutely zero watering is Holly. If you do the "plant and neglect" strategy a lot depends on the "luck of the draw" in terms of rain fall. When you plant is sort of critical as well. Eastern Redwood requires zero care once it gets established.

You have to be more specific than just "OGR" to find the ones which will do well in Florida. Teas, Chinas, Noisettes, and Tea-Noisettes are just four types of OGRs. 'Louise Odier' is a Bourbon, and while an OGR, probably isn't suitable for Florida. 'The Fairy' is a Polyantha, and with that Multiflora background probably isn't suited to alkaline soils found in much of Florida. Meanwhile, four you mentioned as doing well -- 'Duchesse de Brabant', 'Duquesa', 'Mrs. B. R. Cant', and "Spice" -- are Teas, and Teas thrive in areas with little or no Winter. I have a bunch of Chinas and Teas here in NJ, and they are rarely without bloom through the growing season, but get hit hard by Winters here. Check out Rose Petals Nursery or Angel Gardens -- two Florida rose nurseries -- and search under the Teas, Chinas, Noisettes, and Tea-Noisettes. These types do very well in warm climates, usually blooming all year. Other types of OGRs -- such as Bourbons, Hybrid Perpetuals, Portlands, or the once-blooming types -- likely won't do well for you, though there may be random exceptions. :-) ~Christopher
