Rain, rain, go away!
Comments (14)Now, this is really getting ridiculous! On Thursday my DH and I drove in to the City. We had checked the tide tables, and it was an extra low tide, so we decided that the freeway would not be flooded, and went despite the fact that it was pouring. In places the freeway, AND THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE had standing water on them (or rather, running water) 2 to 3 inches deep, because it was coming down so fast that it couldn't drain as fast! At some places you could only see 10-15 feet ahead, because it was raining so hard! Final rain amount for that day here was 2.21 inches. Last night (Fri) it started to pour again, hard, and kept it up all night, and it is still doing that. I just got my boots, long rain coat, and a large umbrella and ventured out our long driveway to get the papers. Half of the entire length of the driveway is under running water, and the deep street storm gutters have overflowed onto the sidewalk. The entire sidewalk is under water (not to mention my rose beds which are between it and the street) for what I can see of the length of the entire block. When I checked yesterday's paper we were 2 inches over our "season to date normal" rain number, and almost at our total annual (season ends in June) normal number. I am going back to bed! Comments (2)Well, here in western MN it is a 'drippy day'. No steady rain, just a leaking of the sky from time to time and cloudy with no hope of sun. Too wet to do anything outside, too wet to go nursery shopping. I have a full day tomorrow of work etc, so you will be guaranteed a sunny day....See MoreRain rain go away... so I can take pictures.. ; -)

Comments (10)Unfortunately there aren't too many plants that can withstand both standing water and hot dry condiditions as well. Some daylilies will do OK in soggy areas, but most won't thrive when it gets really hot and dry. Seems like we get really wet Springs every couple of years and then the rest of the year will be mostly dry. About two years ago we had a wet Spring and Summer and I had a bumper crop of everything in well-drained areas, but things that were in soggy areas died. One other suggestion I would make is to have a landscaper take a look at your yard to determine if you need to change the drainage patterns. We did that a couple years ago and by changing the way our driveway was graded we were able to divert water coming down the hill onto our front porch to drain down the driveway into the culvert instead. It was a big expensive job but it was worth it to protect the foundation of the house. And the city paid for the culverts because the guy who did our grading was able to convince them that they were necessary. Cheryl...See Moremoodyblue
