I will be planting tow Austrian Coppers and one Persian Yellow rose this fall. Are there any roses that are sufficiently black spon resistant to be planted nearby? I'm thinking that some rugosas, spinosissimas or species roses might be safely placed around them. Suggestions would be very welcome.

According to an older study in the state of Kansas, the roses listed below should have good resistance to blackspot and have a good ARS rating for the garden. Folks who have grown any of these can tell you their real-world experiences, and you can look for photos and descriptions on HelpMeFind.com

Without knowing where you live, it's difficult to offer suggestions for blackspot resistant roses. (Here for example, Gertrude Jekyll has very poor disease resistance.)

That said, I'll mention Maigold, a Kordes shrub, as here it is very vigorous and disease resistant. I think it would go pleasingly colorwise with your other selections and has a similar fragrance, sometimes called fetid/like linseed oil, but in Maigold to me smells very much like orange juice at certain stages of bloom. The bees go crazy for it. It is also very early, but once, blooming.

Olga (or anyone else with experience with this rose for that matter), would you recommend R. primula for a foundation planting (where one could use a 6-8' tall shrub)? Is R. primula's shrub form sufficiently beautiful for it to work as a foundation shrub? Is the shrub's architecture vase-shaped, or more "brambly" (the way R. eglanteria is clearly a bramble)? (The townhouse it would be planted next to has an exposed 4' high concrete basement wall and for two stories above that is covered in wood siding painted brick red (not a particularly orange brick red either; more brown-red).) The rose would get sun from mid-late morning through most of the afternoon (being shaded by an adjacent lilac in the early & mid morning).

They should eventually close the 12" gap, although it will take several years. I've had it planted quite nicely with Stachys 'Primrose Heron'. Any other gold or silver foliage on a relatively well-behaved and similarly-sized plant should work well.

It is a gangly grower. There are some gorgeous ones in southern Vermont that have been allowed to grow into large clumps so the awkwardness is less apparent. It's a somewhat odd rose in that it seems adapted to a shorter growing season than mine. Sometime in mid-September, the hips ripen and the foliage falls off so you can see them. It isn't anything like the usual foliar diseases of roses, but more of an odd judgement on when the season is over. It seeds around a bit in the garden, but I can't imagine it becoming invasive. There aren't a lot of seedlings, and they don't travel far.

I am a huge fan of the rose Stanwell Perpetual. Another Spin that comes to mind is Single Cherry. Both are very clean in our no spray garden here in South Carolina. Stanwell does repeat well for me.

I'm in a very different climate and location, but I grow several roses quite near these foetidas: Nevada, Betty Bland, Sutter's Gold, Folksinger, Louis Riel, and Princesse. Other roses within sight are Madame Plantier, R. moyesii Geranium, R. hugonis Flore Pleno, Dr. E.M. Mills, R. stellata var. mirifica, and R. pendulina. All are healthy but the spot is quite airy. ( I deliberately omit Reine Victoria that doesn't like its company and will have to go somewhere else.)
