YOu planted two of them by your door? Do you know how big 'Garland' gets??

As to the yellowing, you don't say where you're located, or how large your containers are, so it's hard to provide much information.

The first problem looks like blackspot to me, but I do not know what kinds of effective fungicides you have in the United Kingdom, so I can't advise you on that. However, you might check to see that the rose is getting at least 6 hours of sun a day--less sun can cause many disease problems to occur. Also make sure that the rose is getting good air circulation. If you were in the U.S., I'd tell you to get the fungicide Bayer Advanced Garden Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and (oops, I forgot the third category). But I doubt if it is sold where you are.

As to the second problem, I don't really know, but since you have the roses planted in pots, I would definitely check to make sure those pots have good drainage. Yellow leaves are often a sign of poor drainage. While you are at it, perhaps you should check to make sure those pots are large enough also. A rose that grows 10-15 feet high would need a VERY large pot, I believe--but then I don't grow anything in pots, so I may not know what I am talking about.

It would help to know where you live. Weather conditions play a large part in how a rose behaves. You say it is fall where you are so less sunshine and shorter daylight hours will affect rose growth. They are slowing down and preparing to go dormant for winter. If you've had excessive rain that may be a contributer to the black spot problem. Also, if you've had some cold nights and/or frost that could be another contributing factor to the yellowing of some leaves.

The first one does look like black spot to me. Continue to spray it regularly using the package directions and hopefully it will respond. Sometimes this take longer than you think. For one thing upper leaves may already be infected but not showing symptoms yet so even after spraying they will continue to spot. Secondly, weather conditions may just be perfect for the fungus to flourish and even with spraying it will be hard to control.

The second one doesn't look so bad to me. Sometimes roses will shed older leaves. This happens particularly with interior leaves and leaves toward the bottom that are no longer getting as much sun or producing food for the plant. If the rose seems otherwise happy, growing and blooming, and there are no other signs of distress I wouldn't be too concerned.

Slightly alarmed by the comment about the size this thing grows - it said it would go about 15 ft, and that's roughly what's required to cover the door area.

The weather here has been pretty poor recently - fairly damp, and cold - not a great September.

In terms of the size of the pot I'm also alarmed! It's probably about 60cm wide and about the same high. Drainage seems reasonable - certainly when I have watered the pot water flows freely from the bottom.

It's grown pretty healthily up to about 2m high in about 4 months.

One point to make re: the 'two roses' approach I took. They're about 7 metres apart. I was hoping I'd be able to encourage them to meet in the middle over my doorway. Photo of the front of the house 'pre-rose' linked to this post. We felt the house was very stark from the front, so wanted to have roses growing up a couple of trellises to soften it. Imagine one in the 'corner' to the left of the front door as you're facing the house, and the other in the right hand 'corner' by the drainpipe.

I hate to rain on your parade but I can think of some problems with doing these climbers in pots. Being in Scotland I'm thinking your winters are probably pretty cold. How will you winter these roses? With the root balls in pots exposed to the worst of the winter cold they may not survive. I have to do serious winter protection for my potted roses here. While they are small you could move them into the garage for winter but once they climb I don't think that's going to be an option.

Also the pots don't sound big enough. They may be fine now but when those roses get 15 feet tall they will be too small and unstable to hold them up. I've had problems with some of my larger roses (not even climbers) toppling over in the wind because the pots were not big enough or heavy enough to support the sail that the rose will create when it's all leafed out. When looking for pots now I always look for wide, very stable bottoms. And big, bigger, biggest is best!

The other thing is that roses grown in pots occasionally need to be taken out of the pots, root pruned and given fresh soil. I have to do mine about every 5 years depending on the vigorousness of the rose. And climbing roses do not climb on their own. They have to be tied to make them grow on a trellis or arch. You would have to untie all those canes in order to change out the soil in the pot. Not an easy job with a 15 foot rose!

I cannot tell from the picture but if there is any way to plant these in the ground that would be the best bet. They would indeed make a gorgeous statement over your entry way!
