Northern Illinois, Mchenry County, Shade tree

Hi Everyone,
My wife and I want to plant a nice shade tree between the edge of my patio and the fence. We have about 10-12 feet between the patio and fence. The neighbors shed sits about 2 feet from my fence on the other side. We currently have a White Ash which is infected and must be removed this fall in the center of the yard which once removed, we would like to plant a tree on the opposite side of the patio, which is the small unused area to provide shade in the evening.

I am hoping people can tell me which route to go. I went to the local nurseries, seems they all suggest a Pear tree such as the Bradford Pear. My wife and I dislike the scent and we want a tree that will not drop alot or any if possible. Also the ability to resist insect infestation would be great. We currently have 2 large pines on one side of our home, a red maple on the other side of our home and a white birch in the front yard.

What type of tree would you suggest, guessing 40-50 feet tops in height, around 30 max width. Clean tree with little to no droppings due to being eventually over our patio and low maintenance is a plus. Thanks

Just got a return phone call from our nursery we originally purchased the red maple from 15-20 years ago. They suggested a Beacon Oak or Scarlet Sentinel Maple for that small of an area.

When I planted my orchard I was told the same thing for my zone, but I couldn't help myself. I have a Kristen and Gold cherry tree that have survived 4 and 10 winters respectively. I've tried Black and White Gold and Heldelfingen which suffered winterkill and died after several years. Last summer I harvested a few Gold cherries for the first time. Carmine Jewel, Juliette, Romeo and Cupid are dwarf sweet cherry varieties bred in Canada, that are supposed to be hardy. The availability in the US is limited - I've seen Carmine Jewel in the Gurneys catalog but not any of the other varieties, which are supposed to be sweeter.

Cutie, I live across the river from you and planted a tulip tree last year. At the time I planted it, it was approximately 2 ft tall. This summer even with the drought it is now nearly 6ft. It is a very fast growing shade tree that takes minimal maintenance. It is however relatively weak wooded and may drop branches in storms. I would also recommend a swamp white oak or even a regular white oak. These grow relatively fast and are very hardy. Is that a pool? If the trees location will be south of the pool, be aware that southern summer winds will blow debris (i.e leaves) into the pool. I have a pool also and the maples around the area dropped a lot of leaves with the drought and ended up in my pool. Just something to think about. Sorry for the long post but I would recommend Tulip tree for fastest growth Swamp white oak for being stronger If you stick with anything that grows naturally in the area you shouldn't have to worry about hardiness aside from when it's young or newly transplanted. Also factor in cost as it may be better to spend more and buy something already larger like 5' to 6' so that it'll be of good size by the time your kiddo(s) are wanting to climb it. If you go with the tulip tree, plant it in the spring. They do not do well when planted in the fall.

I'm assuming maples don't drop a lot of junk other than in the fall? ===>>> you almost made me cry on that one .. i was laughing so hard .... seed drop in spring.. the dam-ned helicopters ... is a curse worthy of an 8th plague.. not to mention the 8 or 10 billion seedlings ... i suppose it might matter what kind of maple.. but all the generic ones i have dealt with are problematic at best .... maybe if you find a sterile one .... then you said: This patch of yard gets sun from about 10 am to 7pm and it so hot and dry that I have a hard time getting grass to live through the summer. again.. based on those i have dealt with ... most maple will not support vigorous grass under them .... and the pic below shows why.. they are extremely shallow rooted ... and in 20 years or so.. you will be bouncing over those roots with the lawn mower ... it is an understatement to say I HATE MAPLES ... lol.. like most peeps here will testify .. can i have an amen.. lol ... but that is because i garden under trees ... and maples and a few others are the bane of growing just about anything ... now.. whether or not these things will happen in your lifetime.. is the key ... as most of my problems are from mature trees that were on the property when i moved in .... whether you will be there is 20 to 40 years.. when the real problems start .... well that is for you to answer ... my fallback.. in the choice of trees... is ALWAYS oak ... once they get going.. they can grow 3 to 5 feet per year... just under what a maple can do .... and frankly.. no matter what tree you opt for.. there will be a downside ... acorns.. helicopters.. fruit.. nuts .... barren soil underneath .. etc .... so it will all come down to simply your best choice... as i doubt you will ever find the 'perfect' tree ... IMHO ... the key to clay is simply the planting procedure.. allowing them to get established.. and once they do. they are fully capable of putting their roots where they want them ... for the most part ... good luck ken

I'm trying to build my soil and I have read stories where even the hardest clay changes simply with top dressing every year. It takes much longer this way (years), but the stories have been convincing. I'm leaving the autumn leaves in my garden and I take bags of leaves from my lawn and keep them rather than giving to the county. I try to shred the leaves but we find the process messy and unpleasant (loud shredder) but I usually get a bag or two done which worth about 5 bags unshredded. I use the shredded leaves as a bottom layer of mulch for my vegetable garden and any leftovers for my ornamental garden. The whole leaves are used for the ornamental gardens and back "wild" garden. On top of the leaves, I put shredded hard wood mulch for the ornamental garden and natural bark mulch for the vegetable garden. I use much less than if I only used mulch as I have the (completely free) layer of leaves underneath. My vegetable garden gets turned a bit every year as I plant new, so I have seen the best change in my soil as the broken down mulch from the previous year is incorporated into the top few inches as I break up the soil and create a smooth planting base in the Spring. I'm starting to compost again and hope to have my own compost to use as another layer. My county doesn't do this, but others nearby will deliver for free to residents truck loads of compost (I'm so jealous). You might want to look into your local services to see if they either deliver or allow pickup of mulch or compost for residents. I'm really excited for you and your project! I think you will have an amazing woodland garden!

Never heard of a Katsura, but called my local nursery. They said its a great tree but needs alot of water, not good on a sloped surface :(. I was really happy reading about that tree. Also he said he has 10-12 foot katsuras on sale for 191.00.

You might see if your nursery has Acer truncatum. Very drought tolerant, soil tolerant, cold and heat hardy, pretty much the perfect tree. Also, there are cultivars such as 'Fire Dragon' with bright red fall color. Sooner Plant Farm has 5-6' 'Fire Dragon' arriving on 9/1 (43 units) online. link below.

If your nursery has Acer truncatum seedling grown trees... you should wait until fall colors are displayed to choose your individual tree.

Got to recommend against Fire Dragon that far north. Ours in Northwest Arkansas has not grown nearly as vigously as advertised, but that is not the reason I recommend against it that far north. I dont think its as cold hardy as some seed province. Ours got a severe case of sunscald this past winter, despite having very thick fully mature bark and not having had an issue with this before. The wound is as much as 4" wide on about 5.5" caliper trunk at that level. Its callusing over, but it will take at least 2 or 3 more years to close the wound. If this happened in my zone 6b winter, then I would not touch it further north.

I've had one in the ground 4-5 years. Even last winter with -18F did nothing to it.

I also have a seedling.....again, no damage.

Our tree was planted November 2007. The originator of the cultivar happened to be coming to the area, and he transported our tree to our area. Our tree is very well established, and has grown from 1" caliper, to presnt caliper of about 6" or so (not completely certain from memory) adding about 1"/yr. I have posted pics of it many times, and those can still been seen at photobucket user Arktrees. We got to -25F a few years ago. The same tree had some branch damage but not too severe, and no sunscald. I posted a thread at the time titled "Zone Buster". Search that title and Arktrees, and it should turn up if GW hasnt deleted the old thread (which they do from time to time). The climate difference was probable 18" snow during the -25F, but not nearly as much snow, and sometimes none, during our sub-zero nights this past winter. Im sure northern Ill is quit capable of producing those climatic conditions on a regular basis. Anyway you look at it, I would not have expected it to have sunscald issues, but a 4" wide wound says I was wrong, and I will not be recommending Fire Dragon to anyone north of Zone 7 due to the slow growth, and apparent susceptibility to winter damage. Now species Acer truncatum sourced from locally grown stock is a completely different story. Perhaps another speces would be a better choice.
