Grandmother's Hat not looking so great --
Comments (19)Ingrid, I do agree! I have learned so much here. I don't think I'd even have roses if not for you-all, and I know I wouldn't have rose babies that I've propagated myself! Grandma Update: You know how you can have a chronic malady and you keep delaying a trip to the doctor, and then the day of your appointment, the malady mysteriously -- resolves? You don't? Well, you know how for weeks and weeks your hair will look like the dog's breakfast, and then you finally get an appointment at the hair salon and are all excited, and you wake up the morning of your appointment and your hair is PERFECT?? That's -- sort of what happened this evening. I went out to water the roses and my gosh, what a surprise, I found that Grandma is suddenly pushing out lots more leaflets and some farther down the stems, and canes that (I thought) two days ago were showing NO life actually are showing many tiny little pink and green tips. AND there was a big fat gorgeous open bloom, and another small one. Gram's foliage still looks pallid, and yes, her legs are bare a good ways up, but things look far less bleak. I did bend and tie out some canes and branches so they're not all just shooting up vertically. I will keep a closer eye on Grandma and remember to keep up with the nutrition and extra water. Hopefully, she'll green up and maybe there will be a new basal one of these days. But at least I can see that she's not in a complete free-fall now. Thanks much to everyone for the very helpful information and advice today. Sheba...See MoreGrandmothers hat sport
Comments (11)In my cooler climate, 'Tina Marie' is usually blush. (In Sacramento, it's distinctly white.) But I have had it sport right back to "Grandmother's Hat" and I've had half-and-half blooms, too. I really wish it were available now, because it's a great rose. (I need to get DH to do some propagating.) Here's an example, but she is infinitely variable. For me, 'Larry Daniels' was a warmer pink -- and the color was more stable. But my plant was a very very weak grower, and we finally got rid of it....See MoreGrandmother's Hat is killing off Dr. Huey!
Comments (19)Jeri, Carol, those are all good ideas for underplantings--thank you. It's not really that I don't care for the leggy look -- it's more that my plant is so very sparse. She was at @ 6.5 feet tall, with greenery only above @ 4 feet; and there are only a few canes. When she's blooming -- seems like a nice quantity of bloom for the greenery, but I want to see more leaves. That's really the issue. I think the snipping back will do the trick, tho--she's really leafed out. I really don't know much about pruning and such and have mostly avoided it -- but only about a week ago, I did a lot of cutting to the rose that's been winning the "Most Miserable in My Collection" prize -- Dupuy Jamain. And -- incredible -- that rose is already showing a LOT of fresh new growth, after doing next to nothing for the past 2 years except mildew and blackspot and rust! Going to try this on a few of my other struggling/loser plants and see how they manage....See More"Grandmother's Hat" is back!
Comments (10)Absolutely gorgeous pics Jeri! Thank you for posting them. Sigh, sadly, location-location-location. For those of you who are tempted but happen to live in the Mid-Atlantic states, GRANDMOTHER'S HAT was a black spot disaster for me in Maryland USDA Zone 7a - and yes I sprayed, with two fungicides. In the five years that I grew her, the spindly, nearly thornless, shrub never got above two feet. She had no vigor growing on her own roots compared with the found Bourbon MAGGIE that was also own root and planted the same year in the same bed that had its soil amended to improve drainage and fertility. MAGGIE exploded into a robust four foot shrub within two months with good-to-very-good remontancy. I didn't crowd the roses either because I assumed they would become big shrubs. GH rarely rebloomed and always flopped the blooms into the mulch (weak necks). Such a shame because as you can see the blooms are extraordinarily beautiful. Sinfully fragrant too. I'm not kidding. INTENSE, knock your shocks off, fragrance that rosarians dream about. I got my own root GH from Annies Annuals....See Morerosefolly
