Does anyone have pictures of Grandmother's Hat?
Comments (12)Organic -- Yes. That plant is living in our garden. It is our OLDEST Grandmother's Hat, and most of our others were propagated from that one. ============= I've also got "Charlie Daniels" *** ??? "Charlie Daniels" came from? There is a 'LARRY Daniels,' a registered sport of "Grandmother's Hat," which was propagated by a former rose vendor in San Jose. He named it for a favorite cousin. Here's 'Larry Daniels': (My Larry Daniels is a very poor, weak excuse for a plant). The color of Larry Daniels (as see above) is a pale pink -- much lighter than most of the original "Grandmother's Hats." There is also a 'Tina Marie,' another registered sport (so both Tina and Larry can be shown at ARS Rose Shows). 'Tina Marie' is even paler than Larry Daniels, but she is not in commerce now. (We've got at least one Tina Marie for the Sacramento Open Garden Sale. No, I lie. There are 2). Here's Tina: One clone of "Grandmother's Hat" was found on Mare Island. That one is s/n "Northside Pink," and it is commonly a shade darker than a normal GH. But that, also, is not in commerce. Jeri...See MoreSuggestions for roses like Grandmother's Hat?

Comments (5)I garden on the south end of the Peninsula, where it merges into the South Bay. I do not grow Souvenir de la Malmaison, either form. I tried it twice years ago (not the climber), but it was not a healthy rose for me. YMMV. I have a well established Grandmother's Hat, and it is an excellent rose here. It has a natural vase shape that is very pleasing to the eye. Right now it is about 7 feet high and by the end of the season it will be 8 feet tall. Over the winter I prune it down to about 5 1/2 feet-6 feet. This keeps it in bounds without putting it into shock. The width is about 6 feet at the fullest part, much narrower at the base. After some experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that it looks best with either mulch or a low growing ground cover under it, but nothing that comes up very high. You don't want to obscure the gracefulness of the plant's shape. I planted Renae just this spring to climb the fence by the front gate and greet visitors. It has not yet grown enough for me to comment on its performance in this climate, but anywhere I've seen it, it is a lovely and tall rose. All three of these roses were placed in full sun locations, though I do have other roses growing where they get half day sun. Best of luck with your new plantings. Comments (7)Oh, Jackie! Wait until you see a hedge of the three together! It's gorgeous! That's how the man who isolated and registered the two sports grew it. He stated he found a good third of the Grandmother's Hat plants he produced sporting to Larry Daniels. Sports traditionally revert to the original about thirty percent of the time, which led him to believe that GH is the sport and Larry Daniels is the original and the one we should be trying to identify. I'd love for you and Clay to come, Jeri! I think it's a wonderful 'excuse' to get together! Sure, please? Anything you want to bring for me to wrap is fair game. Holly is bringing Tina, Larry and Tamalpais Tea. What works best are last year's flowering wood, or that just below last year's flowering shoots. The buds shouldn't be already forming new foliage and flowers, or it's too far along pushing new growth. Robert just sent a load of Gigantea, Helenae and Banksia goodies and they were easy to work with as he'd removed the foliage and cut them to about six inch lengths. Material for wrapping is very much what's used for bud sticks. It cuts down significantly on the amount of room. Thank you! Kim...See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
