It wouldn't be a bad idea to treat her now, then in winter with dormant lime and sulfur to make sure none of the mildew lives during the winter.

Given the time of year, a perfectly reasonable thing to do is strip the leaves, then plant it, and say nighty night.

strip the leaves and prune bach the stems? Is the Powdery Mildew soil born? Should i treat the soil with the lime and sufur combo that pfzimmerman suggested?

Controlling the fungus by just stripping the leaves back would make my day!

Powdery mildew spores are airborne. Cool temps down to at least 45 degrees favor their germination. It's the easiest thing in the world to kill the adult fungus because it lives on the surface of the leaves. It's much more difficult to provide lasting protection against reinfection. I'd be inclined to keep the leaves on a new transplant at this time of year in my milder part of zone 5. Spritzing your plant with a 1% dispersion of canola cooking oil (roughly, a teaspoon in half a quart of water) along with just enough dish detergent to wet the surface of the leaves evenly will kill the infection.

I'm in zone 5 as well. I'm not sure i undestand what you are suggesting. Are you saying keep the leaves and kill the infection(is that right?) with a Canola oil, dish detergent spray and leave the soil as is?
What might be the problem if i went with mad_gallica's suggestion of stripping the leaves?

I wouldn't suggest stripping leaves or pruning now. That would just encourage new top growth that will be too tender to make it thru the winter.

Potted roses are often more prone to disease problems vs. roses planted in the garden. That's because a rose is always too wet/too dry or too hot/too cold when in a pot. PM is a disease that comes on in the spring and fall, when the day/night temp differential is the greatest. You'd be doing the poor plant a big favor to get it planted as soon as possible.

Paul's advise of dormant oil/lime sulfur once the plant is dormant is very good. Meanwhile, until the plant goes dormant you can spray with something like Bonide's Infuse. It contains the same active ingredient as the professional product Banner Maxx and is very good on powdery mildew.

Usually Mike gives good advise, and definitely knows his chemistry, but there's nothing on the label of a bottle of canola oil or dish detergent that instructs you about using those products on plants. A light neem oil product (like Bonide Rose Rx) or a plant soap (like Safer's Insect-killing Soap) are tested and labeled for use on plants and can be effective for growing-season treatment of PM if you don't want to use a "chemical" like Bonide Infuse.

Good advice above. Also bear in mind that simply getting the plant planted will help it be happier and healthier. I bought a couple of plants at Rite Aid this summer on sale that were crammed into a shaded corner of the front of the store. To say the least they had many yellow leaves and PM. I pulled a few leaves, did some light trimming and planted them. Rather than spraying I just rubbed the PM off with my fingers (and then washed them before touching another rose). It was completely gone in a couple of weeks with no spraying of anything.

I trust Nancy's and Paul's and Mad Gallica's rose advice much more than I trust my own, but it's a simple fact that canola oil, often under its original name of rapeseed oil, has been widely tested, with controls, for mildew of roses and other plants. There is even a commercial fungicide, Neudorff's Vegol Oil, which is essentially pure canola oil (and sprayed at 1% concentration). I agree that lime sulfur and especially Banner Maxx are likely to be more effective in the long run, but for one rose, and near the end of the season, canola oil seems hard to beat.

You suggest i don't prune the shrub. Is that because of the PM? I've read several articles about pruning back 2/3 of the growth pre winter. Whatdiya think? also...what do you folks think about planting my rose one place and moving it in the spring?

I always followed Mike Rivers' advice and it helps my roses stay healthy.

Not a bad idea and you can try it. But doing that take advice from the gardeners.I think it will works.

If you want to move it come spring you can always just 'plant' your rose in a larger pot now, bury the pot in the garden and then plant it for real come spring. That's what I would do.

I would not plant it in the pot. It opens the door to really nasty things happening as the ground freezes and thaws. I also really don't think it is going to do much, if any growing between now and the real end of the season. This is the time of year when we would go to Mike Lowe's to buy roses, and all he would do was pull them out of the ground, strip off the leaves, and hand them to us. Between the shorter days, cooler temperatures, and root reestablishment, they just sat there until spring.

Can you plant it in one place now and move it in the spring? Sure. Roses aren't generally pruned in the fall unless they are extremely tall or in the way.

There is a good possibility this rose is extremely pot bound. If that's the case, the rootball should be roughed up a bit, and the whole thing dunked in a bucket before planting.

OK...I should treat the fungus (it is a fungus, right?)and at the same time put her into the garden bed. Will i know when the PM is gone? If i treat it now will the rose be disease free come spring?
As far as pruning go's...i shoudn't mess with it until late winter, right?

Dale: For what its worth I have planted roses in pots as I described above with no ill effects whatsoever. But then again I'm not in Zone 5 although we do have snow and freezing weather here. Seems to me that planting a rose in the ground only to turn around and transplant it again in the spring is equally if not more cruel than transplanting it into a larger pot now and sinking that in the garden.

But that's up to you of course.

Thank you everyone! After taking it all in I'm thinkin' that firstly, I have to/will treat the PM then the best course of action (and easiest) is to dismantle part of my current garden and get this baby planted.

Kate, IÂve heard that planting the pot is a good solution but ya know it will take me about the same amount and effort to dig a hole big enough (and i mean big!) to put the pot in the ground and transplanting in the spring seems kinda iffy. Soo i'm just going to plant her in her permanent home...with all the bells and whistles (compost and planting soil and all the amendments and good stuff in heavy bags that I thought I was done with for the season).

IÂll prep her for the winter, unbound her undoubtedly pot bound roots, prune her in late winter and treat her PM all the while. Sooo that's the plan:)

Any more thoughts are always appreciated!
