Have you ever regretted buying a newly introduced rose?

There is not enough info on them. Should I trust the AARS and J & P rose of year awards?

I only have room for two and my wish list consist of three:

Heaven on Earth, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Lovestruck.

Lovestruck is brand new but beautiful and disease resistance. OLG blooms heavily and HOE will look like English Rose but (hopefully not as big).

What do you think I should get?

Man what a hard decision!

Yes, I've regretted many purchases of brand new roses. But I've gotten past that sort of thing.
If you're serious and have the time, find a rose test garden near you. The AARS test gardens have many of these roses for three years before their introductions. And the garden closest to you is a wonderful resource to see how the rose grows in your part of the world.
For me, the closest gardens are four hour drives and none are comparable to my zone or growing conditions.

FJ, get all if you can, but for sure get Our Lady. This rose
is a free spirited bloomer, with every shade of pink on it.
Dark pink bud, medium pink reverse, light pink in full bloom
and in California, very healthy.

Its so nice to see faces with the names, and even nicer to see roses with the faces. Im Renee, 49, a history professor married to Mike, an archaeologist. We live in Simi Valley on a semi-rural half-acre lot in the house grandpa built (I use the term "built" loosely), which we have slowly rebuilt over the last ten years. No kids. We have a twenty-eight-toed orange cat, named Sam; a yellow lab named Sam; two Wyandotte chickens named Quasimodo and Blanche; and a pond full of goldfish of which only a few have been graced with identities. Mike also feeds an assortment of finches, scrub jays, and fence lizards, the last of which now run up to people with sandals on and bite the toes to make the toes cough up mealworms. My mother gave me the gardening bug and shes still my main enabler. I spent my years in college planting seeds in dry, narrow, dark apartment "beds" or balcony pots, shuffling pitchers of water to them from the kitchen sink. Since then, I have remained an astonishingly ignorant and lazy gardener with no foresight or sense of planning. My garden has grown in an entirely haphazard fashion over the years and makes no sense in terms of high-water/low water needs, design principles, shade/sun needs, color combos, irrigation systems I never cared for roses. The roses I knew as a kid were left to their own devices on the edges of unkempt Bermuda lawns, so that the grass would grow up through the rose and the lone juniper or zonal geranium next to it. Ick. Then I started looking at the photos in the Rose Gallery. Yeah. I dug a new bed and planted it with roses; Mike built new arbors for roses, I am talking my both neighbors into planting roses in the middle of a drought. This forum has saved me from making several serious mistakes, and I thank all of you for your suggestions and wisdom. I am also heartened by your stories of how to cope with disability and continue to garden. Hooray for the Rose Forum! I do not regret planting anything, but the former people who used to own the house a long time ago planted all sorts of unsightly bushes and hedges that would be hard to take out. And the creeping fig has spread everywhere and near impossible to take out. Some of the vines are over one inch thick and hardened, and the roots are getting into the flower beds, I don't understand why all these people have a love of hedges and bushes. Low maintenance? Easy to plant, very difficult to remove after 10 years. Btw, Grace, I love Sterling Silver, that's my favorite rose. :) We have trouble with our Gardenias too, they need humidity, and that's one thing lacking in Southern California. Monimaca, yes, Wisteria is terrible. Once it becomes established it's virtually impossible to get rid of it. The roots spread everywhere and it will try to keep sending up new vines, no matter how many times you try to cut it back. The vines will try to engulf and choke out everything. molewacker, redwoods are a little more tame in the dry Southern part of the State. The worst thing about them here us that they'll turn all brown if they don't get sufficient water, and they take up a lot of water. Some people can't resist planting them, because they are a majestic tree. The one the past owners planted that I hate the most... asparagus fern. That stuff spreads everywhere through it's little berries, usually growing out of all the bushes. It takes over the bush from the inside, starts metastasizing and choking out other parts of the bush. Spent hours trying to cut it all out, it left gaping open patches in the bushes where it had been growing. I see it growing in other parts of the neighborhood too, people just ignore it, I can see several bushes that over the years have become more asparagus fern than bush. The stalks grow very quickly and have little sharp barbs. You can't pull it out with your bare hands. It leaves an extensive network of bulbs under the soil that will keep sprouting out new stalks. It's a nightmare.

I grew up with a kitchen from the early 50's that had white cabinets. 1st house I bought in my first marriage had antique white kitchen cabinets. After that marriage lol, my 1st apt had off white kitchen cabinets. When my current husband and I of 30 years bought our first house, it had oak but so dark almost black you couldn't see the grain. Although that house was built 1950, think the cabinets must have been done early 1970's. We moved in mid 80's. 1990 I striped the cabinets, bought new unfinished doors and stained them a medium oak color. They looked great.. I had vowed I was never going to have white cabinets after living with them so long while growing up. In 1994 had a house built, we chose the new cabinets in medium oak. In 10 years they looked pretty beat up, even after trying to keep them clean and keep up with them. Couldn't afford a whole new kitchen with 16 new cabinets. Started searching houzz and found many where the uppers were a shade of white, and the lowers were stained. I really started to like the look. This also was a way to have a new kitchen at half the price of all new cabinets. So... last Summer, bought a Graco paint sprayer and painted all my upper cabinets antique white, but replaced the doors to be butt doors and 2 cabinets went with frame only and I installed a nice glass and bought all new ORB knobs and handles. We will also be placing LED lights inside the glass cabinets. The whole kitchen looks so much larger than the 16x24 it already is. Being one who loves stained wood, this was a big change for me, even for my husband.when I told him I wanted to paint the uppers white said.. oh no.. don't do that!!.. After showing him the kitchens with painted and stained cabinets, he now loves them too. This year, in fact just over 1 week ago, we ordered lower cabinets from Conestoga Wood Specialties via one of their dealers. 1st part of the order will arrive on Friday. we added 4 new cabinets to the already 16. 2 island cabinets being added on the ends to enlarge the island will be a soft green that I already painted the 2 that are there. 1 corner upper will be antique white like the rest. The rest of the lowers will be Cherry that I will be staining walnut. I do a lot of wood refinishing, so this isn't new to me. 2 years ago, I would have never thought I would ever paint wood cabinets, but so glad I changed my mind. White cabinets in all shades of white have been around probably since the 1800's. If you like white cabinets and it goes in with the style you are going for, they by all means... go for it :) I just have to decide on which Cambria counter to go with.

Is the house your friend wants a licensed rental? Kinda sorta. It's in an area that is designated to allow them, but they just do VRBO. There was some talk a couple of years ago about the town cracking down on VRBO and Air BnB and such, but they opted to tacitly allow them to continue till they deal with the much more serious problems the town has. The owner of this house was one of the most active opponents to the crackdown, so it's not like it's under the radar. Personally, I think a change of attitude on the city commission's part would be her best bet to get the house. I should say that this is a town which gutted code enforcement entirely for several years when most of the commissioners were anarchists, and so you never really know what will turn up next door. There's a similar un-upgraded house for sale a few blocks away for at least $100K less than she'd pay for this one, but that's one of the appeals of this particular property--it's surrounded by much larger very expensive houses that are highly unlikely to rent out more than the garage apt, if they have one, whereas the other house backs up to property that is currently residential but is zoned to allow commercial, too.

I bought a pink blush knockout...a disappointing rose. It's getting shovel-pruned as soon as the drought breaks. Or, at the very least, moved to a less prominent spot. (The ground is too hard to dig right now.)

Yes, not very often but it happened. Maria Shrive comes to mind. I didn't buy it the first year but I believed some raving reviews and pretty photos here on GW, so I got her the second year. She will come out from her prime spot and If I find an empty spot she gets a second chance.

I also tried a few brand new disease resistant Kordes roses but I was not disappointed in them - so far, except with the information regarding their size. [But this size issue comes up with much older roses, too - that is the point where I truly miss local rose gardeners but there are not many around here.]

My question is: if Lovestruck is brand new how on the earth can we be sure about its disease resistance? Disease resistant where? against what kind of disease?

Get OLoG. Seriously. It has been in bloom constantly all season, through this dry spell and the hot spells. A little winner that one is.

On the other, you takes your chances. I would be more incluned to buy an AARS winner than a new, non-AARS, J&P introduction. The exception lately would be Pope John Paul II, which, although mine is small (it is own-root) will be a terrific rose once it takes off. The best of the recent AARS winners (IMO) have been Hot Cocoa and Knock Out.

That's beautiful Devon!

I hope to eat my words on Burgundy Iceberg, but this one is disappointing me. At least the roses are now starting to be burgundy again and now that it's cooled off 20 degress they've gotten a little larger again. We're supposed to be at the 70's in a few days and this bush has a bunch of buds, hoping still to see some purple yet.

Even though this is the color of it's name, Weeks advertises this as a PURPLE rose.
I ought to add that bloom is hanging over a transplanted dahlia in a pot, the bush looks a lot better than that...

Yes, you bet! I bought Daydream, a new introduction AARS winner in 2005. It was supposed to a compact, bushy, everblooming, hardy rose. I bought it to plant along my front walk.

It turned out to be a thorny octopus with blooms the size of dimes. The JB's were bigger than the flower was. It was one ugly bush. It turns out that it wasn't quite so hardy either. Our late spring freeze finished it off much to my delight. I replaced it with Little Mischief which is part of the Garden Path series and hybridized by the same guy as DayDream. It's a much nicer bush and everything that I thought I was getting when I bought Daydream. Live and learn!

Good luck with your choices. I have 2 Heaven on Earth and love them. Beautiful, fragrant flowers and healthy bush. I would love to grow Our Lady because I've heard nothing but great things about her but I don't think she would survive my winter.

I have only truly regretted one rose purchase and that was "Lady Moss". I was really excited about her and gave her the best of everything, but she's been a big disappointment. She gets more blackspot & mildew than my worst offenders no matter what I do and she is still tiny & the blooms don't impress me either. I've moved her twice to no avail. I honestly have never shovel-pruned a rose (yet) which is why she's still here. But my patience is running out.

The good news is that I can highly recommend "Heaven on Earth" to you. Mine is a monster in spite of my zone 4 winters and blooms so abundantly that the huge blooms nearly obscure the foliage. She stays disease-free until the very end of summer when she gets some minor b.s. but nothing terrible since winter's coming anyway.

I also recommend the new H.T. "Pope John Paul II". In every way this has turned out to be a winner. The scent is delicious and strong and the form perfect. Mine has just put forth another flush and is covered in blooms.

I have Our Lady and Heaven on Earth, I love both of them and it would be hard to choose between the two. I was disappointed
With Daybreaker, and I didn't buy Burgundy Iceberg, but was disappointed in how it looked at the nursery.

I bought OLOG 4 years ago when she was a relatively still new to the commercial market. I have not regretted it one teeny weeny little bit since. This is a really great pink floribunda rose. Super healthy and vigorous growing bush and foliage from the roots to the tip top of the bush. The flowers are plentiful at all times and a wonderful consistant silvery pink in color that really contrast well with the dark foliage. The only thing I could even fault this nice little rose about is its' lack of discernable fragrance, but for me that is a very minor point.
I have ordered the new floribunda's that J&P is introducing for Spring 2008 which of course include the Lovestruck you say you have already ordered. Enchanted Evening and Mardi Gras are the other two in that package that J&P is offering I believe. Anyway, the gossip about these three and the pictures I ahve seen look pretty darn good and I need about 15 floribundas to fill out my front yard flower beds.
I also like the hybrid tea and grandiflora roses that J&P is introducing for next Spring as well. I bought the 2007 Hybrid Tea Test Panel roses package this year and it of course included the bi-color April in Paris and yellow Southern Belle that J&P is introducing Spring 2008. April in Paris is actually their Hybrid Tea "Rose of the Year" that they award. Pretty lucky that I got both of these in this Test Panel Package. The darker pink rose in the panel from last year they re-released as part of this years panel as well. It is a really nice rose and am glad to have it, or rather them since I have two of them now. I hope they commercially market this one as well, but I won't hold my breath. That's really too bad as it is a good rose. I have counted as many as 25 single-stemmed flowers on this rosebush per flush which is remarkable for a first year own-root bush. Even if J&P dumps it like they are famous for doing to good roses, I am going to keep my two bushes as I really like them. I have even tentatively named it after my now deceased mother-in-law named Lois, God bless. I think her favorite of my 200+ roses was the pink Elizabeth Taylor rose and it resembles this test rose quite alot.
All that said, I don't have a problem buying newly introduced roses if you do a little homework first and buy from a reputable supplier. As I said, I have already ordered the new J&P 2008 floribunda package and I have also ordered the Spring 2008 Hybrid Tea Test Rose Panel as well. It is only $40 and I have always ended up with at least three good roses that I personally like no matter what J&P thinks of them. Funny thing is, the light pink rose in that 2007 Test Rose Panel J&P actually marketed as the Geraldine Ferraro rose and I didn't like it at all. It was a wimpy grower and I only got two blooms the entire growing season and they were not very pretty blooms at all. You just never can tell for sure I guess.

New rose purchase regrets? Sure. I bought Barbra Streisand after glowing reviews about fragrance and flower form. That rose was NOT for my climate or growing conditions. Blackspot magnet! Same was true for a couple of the Dream Rose series, Dream Yellow and Dream Orange. What a marketing ploy! and I fell for it. I never tried the original Dream Pink, that was supposed to be the "best" but solid medium pink was never to my taste.

By the way, I've got to find some way to make space for JPII. I keep hearing folks here rave about it. I currently have NO pure white roses, and I only want them if they have fragrance. This one sounds like a great candidate.

I usually try to resist buying roses their very first year on the market. I want to pick Rose Forumers' brains before I buy. But other times I've bought brand new introductions I have generally been pleased. That has usually been with AARS winners.

Every new rose deserves two or three years to settle in, but I think I'll make an exception for one I planted last spring: Gentle Giant. What a dud that one has turned out to be for me. Flowers are few & small, the color's boring, it has unsightly, bothersome thorns that go all the way up to the very base of the flower and the bush is open, strangely asymmetrical, shapeless. Maybe it's a zonal thing & this rose simply prefers more gentle climes.

I consider any rose that I purchase...without prior approval of these forums...a 'whim' purchase. I always consult my friends here for their experiences before I chunk down my money. But I have been smitten a time or two...lol

I know I tend to be boring...yep, I would never go to see a grand opening of anything, BUT, I can't find any reason to buy a new introduction. There must be a thousand great, completely tested, roses out there which I don't have. I can get meaningful testimonial from the Forum. And other sources. So why should I trust some Madison Ave. type and buy the latest hyped rose? I'd sooner trust Pete41.

Come to think of it, there is one reason that may induce me to buy a relatively new rose. J&P introduces roses and then drops them in 2-3 years, so by the time I collect enough feedback from forumers, the rose is not available from them and they will take care of no other nurseries could sell that rose. So, if that is a New Generation rose and there is some feedback that I may buy it in its second or third year on the market before it disappears.

E.G I was tempted to get perfume perfection after seeing Aprille photos (I need 2 white floribunda for a certain spot) but somehow this 1-gallon fall delivery business didn't hit me right. I asked J&P about this rose and they said that it is grafted.... Grafted rose in a 1- gallon pot? I dropped the purchase idea right then as it were a hot potato

I planted LoveStruck this spring and it has not been a
disappointment in any way. Completely dr, fast growing with lovely foliage and the blooms are breathtaking...
and profuse. I was surprised to see it listed as a "new"
rose. I'll attempt to load the photos soon.

On the other hand, the PJP has had disease and lost almost all the foliage but seems to be coming back and has some buds.

Oh, I do love the Our Lady and Heaven on Earth photos and will add them to my list of "Must Have".

Where did you buy your Lovestruck in the spring? I thought it was new 2008 introduction. Was it part of test roses JP sells few year before it is commercially available?

I picked it up at 99cent store in Camarillo California. It has the JP tag with the name on it and it is the rose pictured on the JP web site. It was a first time to try the roses from there and I really did not expect them (2) to live...they were bare root and not moist at all. I presumed that the roses offered for 99 cents were close-outs, etc. It was a total shock and surprise to see them offered for 2008. I have to think that the Rosestruck offered was the test rose that you mentioned.

We have just gotten Vista Windows and I still must find out how to load the photos from the hand-me-down digital camera that is also new to me. Computers are still a mystery to.

Growing roses is fairly new hobby for me and I am so very grateful for all the information so generously offered and shared on this forum.

Rainbow knockout is ugly, blows quickly, has tiny blooms and the biggest thorns I have ever seen. She is gone next year!

Regular Knockout and Double Knockout have extremely nasty thorns also. I removed 53 of the regular Knockouts this spring that were (grafted on fortuniana) going into their second year. I was so injured from pruning them last year that I couldn't bear the thought of touching them again this year. The 3 Double knockouts were taken out about a month ago. I've replaced them with chinas, teas, and a few noisettes.

I also found that they are not maintenance free, at least not down here. They need a lot of grooming to look good, and spider mites love them.

I don't miss them.

Sandy, I hear you about the thorns on regular 'Knockout'. They are killers. Otherwise, I'm actually enjoying my Knockout, as it has been extraordinarily healthy and productive. But you can get stabbed just by deadheading the blooms off of this rose, let alone pruning it.

Yes! Aromatherapy. What's in a name? Shakespeare would say, "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet", but he wouldn't be referring to this one. No scent, at all, I bury my head in it thinking there's got to be something in a rose call Aromatherapy...there is something...it's called marketing, mismarketing by Jackson & Perkins.

I rarely buy new releases but bought a J&P package one time that happened to include Fabulous and Black Magic. Those two roses are the only ones out of that order that lived past the first year and both hold places of honor in my garden for beauty and heat tolerance.

I tend to collect newly released miniature roses and yes, I've encountered a fair number of duds. Luckily, they're cheaper and I can schlep them off to rose society raffles so they find another home instead of the city dump.

Well you know folks, roses are relatively cheap per unit in comparison to SOME people's plant obsessions: Have you seen what some of the newly introduces DAYLILIES go for? Triple digits my friends. So you buy one, plant it, but ultimately shovel prune it because it was not 'all that AND a bag of chips'. I would rather be out $10-$20 out for a rose plus time and effort and feedings etc than say $600 or something like that.

When I first started buying roses J&P was my weakness. Yes, I was a sucker for their catalogs and pictures. The local garden center was full of J&P roses. Of course the most expensive and a huge selection.

My first purchase was the famous J&P dozen for 99.00. They have all been in the ground now for about 4yrs. All have made it. That being said not all of them are my favorite.
Tahitian Sunset was a first year and it is a 7'monster with a few apricot blooms. Mr Lincoln came with disease, also a tall bush with a bloom on top.
Good ones are Bella Roma, Purple Passion, Gemini, Nancy Reagan, Ronald Reagan.

I buy own root and have moved away from the HYPE of marketing. This forum is my best information and HMF.

I rarely am attracted to the AARS selections, and despite their claim that these are roses that do well all over the country, that has not been my experience with them. I don't know how J&P selects their Rose of the Year but I think it means "we think this one will be popular"!! The best successes I've had have been when I've been able to watch a planting develop in a public garden.
Here's another trick: I'll look at a rose like, say, About Face and ask myself-- if this nicer than Folklore, Gold Medal, Medallion? OLOG better than Centenaire de Lourdes? A lot of new ones flunk that test.
And here's a useful tiebreaker when considering a rose that's at least 5 years old: how many suppliers you respect are selling it? The best roses have long, long lists of suppliers. Never fails to help ME when I'm stuck deciding. Not very scientific but..

Now, Triple, please don't 'dis Albert. And sure people go on about his wild hair, but if you really looked at him in a well cut suit, and saw him with a great haircut---that dude would look really handsome!! And he truly was a genius.

I appreciate genius, and have watched who the geniuses are coming out of our schools. Fascinating!

On a side note, the genius of our high school had a huge crush on me all thoughout grade school and highschool. Tim confessed his great affection for me to my brothers, who then totally embarrassed him by blabbing that to my mother. Sigh...brothers!! Anyway he was a super nice guy, and wrote something really sweet, (and I mean really sweet!) in my high school yearbook.

And I remember how much he loved airplanes. I learned to love them, too just a very wee bit later. Around the beginning of college I decided that I really wanted to be a pilot. Had to go down a different road after I developed vertigo, and vision was an issue as well. Oh crumbs...

Good grief! I didn't mean to go on and on. Sorta' just got into it, after I started typing. Sorry!

Oh don't get me wrong about genius, because I love a person with a great intellect as long as they are not a pompous so-and-so. I crave intelligent conversation especially laced with wit. I guess what I meant was that there are different kinds of smart. Common sense and genius do not always reside in the same brain.

And yes we had a really nice Easter. The girls brought home some nifty crafts from Sunday School too ;>)

I wonder what kind of hair gel Albert used...?

Still pondering April in Paris. Just love the looks of her.

I kinda agree on the Rainbow Knockout. I was expecting a beautiful rose combo but the color is so washed out. It was much prettier toward the end of the season. Nothing like the reg KO and the pink KO. LOVE the pink Knockout. To me the double knockouts are not as pretty as the orignals. I too was disappointed with the purple iceberg. Was wanting purple but got burgundy. Have grown to love it though. Its beautiful mixed with light pink roses. Would love to get Heaven on Earth and Our Lady. Beautiful pics of them.
